So my 5 year old external hard drive started shitting itself by constantly connecting and disconnecting, followed by not being able to be read on occasion. I took the cover apart and removed the adapter that allows it to connect via USB and connected it to a SATA reader. Windows said it needed fixing once it got connected, but after a scan it determined nothing was wrong. It seems I may be missing some files but there so many I cant confirm. What I have noticed is that a few images have this blue highlight on them, which were not there before. Is this a sign of its end, is there some way I can save it, or should I order a new one and transfer what I can to it?

I have an external HDD I fucked up years ago when trying to recover data from another HDD. I basically corrupted the partition but from what I could tell I could still use something like photorec to get the data back and then reformat it. Well this was fucking years ago and of course my lazy ass never did it soon enough.
So I finally tried, and the drive didn't even show up. I even shucked it and connected it via sata and it still won't show up. I tried using the lsblk command and it would a bunch of nbd# blocks with 0 bytes to them. Might have been something else though.
I assume this means this drive is 100% dead. But is there any weird magic tricks I could try to see if it magically comes back alive? It's not like I could lose anything more at this point.

Maybe the aquatic creatures that you have porn of have haunted your drive to finally moisturise themselves
As an actual answer, I don't know for sure, but when it comes to data that you want to keep it's never worth gambling on "hmm am I SURE the drive is REALLY dying?? maybe I'll wait and see if it's fine". Because then if it's not fine and it dies, all your data is kaput. So buy a second drive, copy your data over, and heck you can even keep using the old drive for a while and see if anything else happens or even play around to try to fix the pictures getting wet. But you'll have all your data safely backed up on another drive (especially if you periodically keep updating the backup), so if the water damage turns out to kill the first drive, everything is safe.
For that matter, in the future, you should just do that in general, so that you can have a backup BEFORE your pictures get flooded. Or, if you're less lucky, before your drive just completely stops working one day and you lose all your files with no warning. Let a few corrupted images be a lesson in caution to you.

>>105688929I have never studied the linux kernel but from what I've heard it's not only C, it's also pretty idiosyncratic C both because it's a 30 year old project and because the kernel requirements for stability AND performance are relatively unique. And in general kernel design doesn't always follow the way you'd write normal software.
I also don't know about you, but I've never met a person (including myself) for whom "studying" a project was productive, without any particular goal of something to do with that project. Instead, if you want to change something or implement some feature, that can guide your studying in a concrete way, and force you to figure out the details of the specific subsystems you need to touch, rather than just being able to skim the code at a high level.
All that being said, one thing it will definitely improve is your ability to read unfamiliar code and dive into big projects.

I'm a moron, on Linux, I used veracrypt to quick format and encrypt an external drive, and also bumped it to ext4. Ran fine, however, now I can't get it to mount because its no longer able to be discovered under /etc/fstab
Any advice?
>>105689574>no longer able to be discovered under /etc/fstabfstab is basically mainly there for automatic mounting, either on boot or to be able to do mount /directory and it looks it up in fstab
if that's your problem all you need to do is mount /path/to/block/device /directory and it will mount that device on this directory without looking at fstab
however I'm not sure how veracrypt works, you might need to decrypt it first to "open" it and have it appear as a block device. e.g. when using linux-native encryption using dm-crypt, you do cryptsetup luksOpen /path/to/encrypted/file/or/device mapped_name and then it opens it and creates a block device /dev/mapper/mapped_name and you can mount that like I showed above. I dunno about veracrypt

>>105689691Yes, but it's usually recommended to make a separate cryptowallet and keep your funds in there rather than the marketplace's wallet, so you're separating your funds from the accounts and so on.
>>105690714I don't remember what it's called but basically batteries at rest can sometimes somehow "relax" and output more voltage than before when used again. But that voltage doesn't last long and it quickly goes back to what would be a normal level for its current charge.
At least I definitely remember old AA batteries doing that, I'm not sure if lithium-ion batteries do or not. For example, have you ever had an electric toothbrush where, once it runs low, at first it runs fine and then it quickly gets to the point where it can barely brush at all, but if you don't recharge it, the next day it'll repeat again, running almost fine at first (before again quickly dropping back to barely having any juice)?
I'm guessing it's either this that happened, or maybe not exactly this but basically somehow the voltage calibration wasn't right. There's no magical "energy meter" in batteries, it's deduced from the voltage they output, and sometimes that voltage might be affected by other factors and not be 100% reliable.
>>105689691If you're fine with pozzing out your IRL ID to some big exchange, then yep, that's basically it. If not it's a lot more complicated.
Like the other anon said, if you're going to hold crypto, do it in your wallet unless you really don't care. Normal money is controlled by laws and regulations, while crypto is controlled by the private key of the wallet, so if you leave that in control of the exchange the only thing stopping them from doing whatever they want is their reputation and maybe some sort of fraud laws (like they claimed they'd hold your money but then took it, which is breach of contract), which are way weaker than the banking regulations surrounding real money. They can also bring some bogus accusations of money laundering or whatever (or "suspicions" thereof) and that'll make it even easier for them to legally seize it.
It doesn't happen very often but point is that it CAN happen, and you can very easily prevent it just by storing it in your own wallet where you and only you have full control. And also full responsibility (don't lose it!).
Anyway
>Coinbase or BinanceCoinbase has always been THE most cucked and regulated one. And often charges a markup on the exchange rates, too. I would avoid Coinbase in all cases, if possible.
Binance are based chinks but can be janky, Kraken is nice to use, it's american so pozzed but then Binance is probably pozzed too and Kraken is a lot nicer and more polished to use, so it's the one I usually recommend to normies.
>4cuck passThey don't actually accept crypto afaik. They only accept "coinbase wallet" transfers so you do have to sign up to coinbase in some way. That's the main reason I haven't bought one myself yet, fuck that.
>>105690630There are two principle risks with port forwarding: It gives direct code exposure on your client to the entire internet, and reusing the same port may allow observers to identify when you're online. The first is irrelevant for p2p users because they have a large public swam with basically identical code exposure with or without port forwarding. The second is mostly bs because you won't be able to reserve the same port every time anyway, and if you're not doing heavy criminal shit it's not useful information to any adversary in the first place.
When a VPN provider says they don't offer port forwarding for your protection, you're dealing with grifters who only want high margin customers.
How does Deepseek compare to ChatGPT Plus?
>>105690928>>105691037>cryptowalletAlright, I'll have a look into that before touching Binance or Kraken.
>Coinbase has always been THE most cucked and regulated one. And often charges a markup on the exchange rates, too. I would avoid Coinbase in all cases, if possible.A general search (which gave leddit results) gave the same accusations to Binance. As far as I'm aware these two are the biggest providers hence it seems like I'm getting fucked either way, but it would be better to get fucked less hard of course.
However, I haven't heard about Kraken so I'll give it a look as well. I honestly just want to process a few payments and never touch anything crypto for a long time.
>They don't actually accept crypto afaik. They only accept "coinbase wallet" transfers so you do have to sign up to coinbase in some way.I thought they do. They do mention the type of coins they accept at least, but the second line regarding "Chains" don't make sense to me.

By the way I could avoid buying a pass altogether if anybody knows of a good VPN service that works with this site. I'm tired of using this imageboard as a messageboard ever since the site got hacked.
>>105691783>I thought they do.Oh huh. I just checked and it does look like you can actually use your own wallet now. That's pretty neat, I might actually get one then.
>the second line regarding "Chains" don't make sense to meBasically cryptocurrencies are kept track of on blockchains, but with the advent of smart contracts - basically arbitrary code executed on the blockchain - people realised you could coordinate different blockchains together by passing messages, and implement ways for actual units of cryptocurrency to be transferred to different blockchains (e.g. a contract on the sending side removes some value from existence, a contract on the receiving site creates the same amount, you now own the same amount of crypto but on the other chain). When you have coins on an exchange, when withdrawing or sending them it might give you an option of which blockchain to withdraw them on. Basically don't select Binance Chain or BSC for these if it gives you the choice.
>I honestly just want to process a few payments and never touch anything crypto for a long time.If it's just for a one-off payment then you don't really need to care about owning the money, so you don't have to bother with a wallet if you don't want to.
>a good VPN service that works with this siteLmao no. Best you can do is residential proxies, but they don't make for good VPNs in general, so it's mostly useful for ban evasion at best. Actual VPNs are almost all comprehensively blocked, and all the good ones definitely are.

>>105692642>>105692602If I were to change the Boot HDD in Windows to GPT, do I need to disable CSM in the BIOS the next time I start the computer?
>>105692876It depends. CSM is "compatibility mode" for your UEFI to behave like a BIOS. (By the way, while it's a common shorthand, when actually talking about these things in detail you shouldn't call UEFI BIOS because it's just confusing. BIOS is the ancient standard. Since you've got the compatibility module, that means what your motherboard actually uses is UEFI, the modern standard.) The actual implementation of CSM varies a lot so there's no way to tell.
But you certainly can disable CSM and it probably won't hurt, so I don't see any real reason not to.
By the way, lots of people criticise UEFI for being bloated - for example, it often includes a built-in network stack, so your motherboard can literally connect to the internet without an OS. Some people consider this excessive, and I tend to agree. But enabling compatibility/CSM doesn't protect you from this, the motherboard still "launches" UEFI, and then runs basically a compatibility layer/emulator/thingy that implements BIOS, so old hardware that expects the old BIOS interface can run. But all the UEFI bloat is still running. The only way to avoid it is to buy pretty old hardware (definitely pre-2015, probably pre-2010, for high end stuff maybe even earlier), so if you've got a motherboard from the last decade or two that comes with UEFI then might as well disable compatibility mode (and all the extra bugs and jank mobo manufacturers might have left in there) unless your boot hardware is really old enough to only work with BIOS.
tl;dr: yeah, if you're repartitioning, just go with gpt and uefi

You should be able to recover the original if the bit is "marginal" you might be able to recover it with multiple passes, possibly over many days and varying conditions (most/all HDDs should have a checksum to determine data is correct, NTFS and/or windows dosn't do much with this info outside of offline scans though I would use ddrescue if the health of drive is in question)

which should I learn for the sake of productivity? Rust or C++?
I have a tool in mind that I want to make using an immediate mode gui, ie imgui or egui
other things I'll need:
http/websocket client library
JSON unmarshaling
plotting (maybe)
concurrency ideally (async/await) but it might not be necessary depending on how good single threaded performance is
It's pretty crucial that this program does not crash
to this you'll say "use rust, duh" but if rust is going to take me over a month to become productive with it then forget it
I need to balance productivity and reliability
I'm also more familiar with C++, marginally (it was my first "real" language technically but I havent used it in over a decade), so that factors into the productivity thing
Ideally I'd use Go since its uber reliable while being uber productive but I need C++ or Rust on my resume (either one)

How viable is using an ethernet splitter from a wall port to two different devices?

>>105705493As in, switches? as long as they're rated to the speeds you want, they're decently cheap

How far away are we from the physical limits of how fast hardware can be?
>>105705659no I mean as like splitting an ethernet wall port between two cables. Think like an HDMI splitter.
>>105705493Splitters don't throttle speed, they're completely inactive devices. They just change which pins and wires are connected to which. Any of them are going to be basically the same and behave the same unless you manage to track down someone with truly abysmal QC. What can cause speed issues is interference (either crosstalk within the UTP or EMI from outside of it). And there isn't shit you can do about that without replacing the wiring, which would negate the use of a splitter.
That said, I've used random Amazon splitters many times, and I've never had issues with them. Just test your throughput for a bit afterwards and if it seems off, check for frame errors. If you are getting them, bad luck has found you. Just get a cheap switch.

>>105705493>>105705897You won't be able to connect both devices at the same time with a splitter since they're passive devices and ethernet is a bidirectional communication standard. Switches are what you want, some can even be powered by PoE (assuming your router supports it)

How safely can I replace the PCB on a HDD assuming I have the exact same board? Of course the data recovery websites talk about never doing such a thing yourself and let the experts(tm) do it for you at a nice low price.
One website selling the boards mentions taking the existing bios chip onto the donor board, but I'm assuming I'd have to do some soldering and not only do I not have the equipment, I have never soldered in my life. Which makes me wonder what would happen if I didn't do that. I don't recall there ever being updates to the firmware. I guess the donor could be from another generation.
>>105706673Each drive has calibration context from the factory + sector mapping. The latter can be very complex for newer drives. You need to transplant the chip. Back then I had the habit of "I can do it later", but later never came. Well that still happens sometimes but I digress. I may have not had the space at the time either, can't remember when I got my other external.
At the time it was working, but corrupted, and I could use testdisk from what I can remember. Maybe I'm remembering wrong though and it was already borked at that time. But I've heard of people pulling out drives that have just been sitting around and they don't work all of a sudden. Either way I do need to get another external as I suddenly fear the other one going out too now.
>>105707687>That one youtube guy /g/ likes argue about? He does that kind of service?Yes, his company basically does anything simple for $100-500.

Build your own NAS if you need to use external storage a lot, that way if a drive fails another has a backup.
Or atleast build your own external drive with a reliable model, Blue models are shit all around.
Red Plus and pro models are good and use something like a Ugreen enclosure.
>>105707748>for $100-500.Not bad, I'll have to see if I can get a quote. (And hope I didn't put anything weird on there.)
>They are $7,000~15,000 because 90% of the price are the extra tools, supports and literal 200+ pages books. All right never mind that.
It was my first external, and at the time I needed space, and it was on sale. I wasn't too aware of the HDD model differences either and it's not like you'll know unless you look it up. I do remember buying the other because everyone said they came with the red models when I had more of an understanding. I haven't shucked it to check though.
Been looking at the red models, along with other NAS specific drives from the other HDD companies. I do want a NAS but the only spare PC I have is a Dell business model. I could probably throw a NAS drive in there, but no RAID. (Already got a dvd caddy converter but it only takes 2.5 drives and I put an SSD in there.)
I've got some 2.5 enclosures but no 3.5 enclosures. I think I might be able to resuse the WD Blue one though. I did my best not to tear it up when shucking it.
Thanks for all the help.

The real risk with doing it yourself is that you might not be able to get it done 100% of the time without damaging the chip. $1000 is an insane markup on the tools required, and even on the labour too just going by hourly rate, but it MAY be worth it if you can't afford to lose the drive: spending $200 on a hot air gun and an afternoon to do it is still going to be worse if you lose the drive permanently after that. I really don't think there's a compelling reason to learn cpp in this decade, unless you're specifically going for an industry where cpp is widespread and well entrenched. But if you have a choice then it's very, very meh. C is fun. Go is widely used. Rust is semi-widely used and fun.
And even the industries that use cpp tend to be older, shittier, less well paid and with more legacy codebases, while stuff using Go or Rust is much more likely to be better paid and more interesting to work on. Maybe if you're going into HFT or something then cpp is worthwhile, sure. Though half the firms there use Java anyway.
Hello everyone
My Laptop has DDR4 RAM.
I'd like to upgrade the RAM. Do I just buy any SODIMM DDR4 RAM or can I buy DDR5 RAM?
>>105686969 (OP)I'm on Linux Mint and I have two identical folders, one that I've sorted and one that I haven't. Is there a program or something I can use to scan and compare both folders to make sure that there isn't anything unique in the unsorted folder before deleting it?
>>105709791Check the motherboard, there's a good chance it has to be DDR4 since laptops aren't really usually designed with user upgrades in mind, but check to be sure
>>105709791You have to stick with the same kind of RAM, so DDR4 SO-DIMM in your case. Different versions of DDR are keyed differently anyway so you won't be able to insert DDR5 there. Also try to find your laptop's max supported RAM frequency so you don't overpay for sticks you'll have to downclock.
>>105709791Just in case, make sure you have SO-DIMM RAM if you haven't already. Laptops can have some or all of their RAM directly soldered onto motherboard.
>>105709871>>105709890>>105709919Thank you for the help anons. Sucks I can't upgrade to DDR5
My RAM is upgradeable, I know that much and it is SO-DIMM. I'll stick with DDR4.
Next question is do I go from 16GB to 32GB which would be fairly low cost, or go for 64GB RAM which is going to cost a lot more?
I use Chrome and I'm a tab hoarder to boot so my current RAM is basically always maxed out.
> Gen ~100 widgets in tkinter
> UI goes 1fps when resizing window
Goddamn this shit is slow
>>105710124>Sucks I can't upgrade to DDR5It's a CPU thing. RAM isn't a peripheral, it's wired directly to the CPU and those wires aren't shared by anything else.
>>105709919>>105709890>SO-DIMMBeing a retard here but don't some laptops have 'left-handed' RAM-sticks or something? I've opened up some Lenovo laptop I had and I swear one of the sticks was normal and the other one left handed, regarding the physical slot I mean.
>>105710585Wasn't that slot just flipped? (SO-)DIMMs have contacts on both sides so if the keying seems mirrored you'd just need to turn the module around.
>>105710124Odd because I also use chromium (ungoogled) and it usually only takes 2-3GB of RAM even with many many tabs. Some time ago they introduced this feature of de-activating tabs that you don't use, and it seems to really keep the memory usage under control.
Anyway, I'd say go for 32GB for general usage. 64GB is only really ever needed if you know you need it for specific things, like VMs, caching, ramdisks, huge in-memory editing, etc.
Are claude code/github copilot a lot better than the general web claude/copilot/grok at coding?
>>105703984Pinokio has a simple web interface for whisper models. but man, prepare to auto-install 50gb of bullshit to your hard drive
>>105710881What model is the web claude using? If it's sonnet 4, it'll be the same LLM. (Claude code can also use opus 4 but only on the $100/month plan and it's not THAT much better at coding.) So it'll be exactly as good at reasoning.
In terms of actual practicality claude code is very very neat though, it can read files on its own and grep through your codebase to find stuff, which it's pretty good at - this is VASTLY better than just copy-pasting chunks of your code into the website interface. It can also suggest/apply updates, so you just review the diff it shows you and press "ok" which is also more convenient than copying back and forth from the website.
But the actual AI is going to be the same like I said.
I have no idea about copilot or what model it uses.

Is it possible to somehow sync the 4chan x's thread watcher between computers?
>>105711510And how much memory is it using? Again, most browsers have added features to unload inactive tabs now, so having a zillion old tabs doesn't balloon your memory usage as much anymore.
My chrome definitely doesn't have 900 tabs, I think it's around 80 right now. I cleaned up a bunch recently.
I also have qutebrowser with 246 tabs (it shows the tab number on each tab!), that's using about 5-6GB total, but it's a fucking leaky faucet of a python abomination.

Generally speaking how hot should a CPU get during MemTest86?
If it peaked at 75c max, is it safe to assume my cooling is adequate? CPU min was in the low 40s and avg under 60c.
I know it will vary for everyone so raw values don't mean much but I'm just talking generally. I don't know if MemTest is the sort of thing that gets your CPU near its hottest temps or if something else like a CPU stress test will make it twice as hot.
>>105716348memtest isn't especially hard on CPUs and the CPU is also likely to behave differently under your regular OS because different drivers. Temps under memtest don't mean anything unless it's turning off from overheating.

>>105714135Holy fuck you're retarded.
>>105717290Malwarebytes is supposed to be good for removing certain malware that isn't picked up on by most antivirus programs, so it can be worth doing a scan with it every once in a while, but Defender seems well enough on its own, since Microsoft access to a lot more data and a better understanding of Windows than any other company. The potential issue with Defender is that because it's on every system, anyone making virus/malware is going to specifically design it to evade Defender, so it wouldn't hurt to have a backup antivirus installed just in case.
>>105717834This would probably be too much effort and probably wouldn't work depending on how the video is encoding/compressed, but you could try just opening the video in an editor and seeing if the voice-over has its own track you can delete.
If it doesn't, but you are certain that the voice-over audio is in mono or all in the same stereo channels, you could try the old trick of copying the audio track, inverting the amplitude, then adding the two audio tracks together. The destructive interference should cancel out the voice track, but leave the rest of the stereo nature sounds alone. This technique used to get unofficial instrumental song tracks, since the main vocals are usually recorded in mono or in all stereo channels. It doesn't work if that isn't the case, though.
AI could probably just remove voice overs too.
Or you could just go outside and watch nature in real life.

I recently came across an MSI N7800GTX and ran some tests to make sure it was working
Windows failed to automatically find drivers for it, Linux Mint had some visual glitches with the desktop, other distros did not. If I run SuperTuxKart, it makes a stink about my version of OpenGL being too low, but let's me play anyway. The racers don't show in the character select screen. The game itself runs at tolerable frame rates (though it's faster on Lubuntu somehow)
Is any of this indicative of something defective, or is it just too old for contemporary OSs?

>>105728215Compression is based on repetition. "Encoded data" like photos, videos, etc are quite chaotic and don't respond to general purpose compression algorithms well. In effect, it probably just compressed metadata headers lol.
You need to save these images individually (a tool like irfanview can batch process but 10 isn't a huge amount) again as lower resolution, smaller color palette, lower quality JPG or a combination of these. Even something like JPG 90 will look quite good and still be a lot smaller than lossless PNG.

Sometimes on takeoff and landing the 4G connection can hold for a surprisingly long time. Sometimes you receive "welcome to roaming" SMS when going over other countries, it's funny.
I've heard it's bad for battery though, because your phone keeps trying to connect and so using a ton of power to scan.
>>105728215Almost all file formats for things like images, music and video come with built-in compression. Zipping an image file would only make sense if it was a raw .bmp or something.
Just as you can't zip a zip file a bunch of times to make a huge folder tiny, so you also can't zip an already compressed image and express it to compress any more.
