So my 5 year old external hard drive started shitting itself by constantly connecting and disconnecting, followed by not being able to be read on occasion. I took the cover apart and removed the adapter that allows it to connect via USB and connected it to a SATA reader. Windows said it needed fixing once it got connected, but after a scan it determined nothing was wrong. It seems I may be missing some files but there so many I cant confirm. What I have noticed is that a few images have this blue highlight on them, which were not there before. Is this a sign of its end, is there some way I can save it, or should I order a new one and transfer what I can to it?

I have an external HDD I fucked up years ago when trying to recover data from another HDD. I basically corrupted the partition but from what I could tell I could still use something like photorec to get the data back and then reformat it. Well this was fucking years ago and of course my lazy ass never did it soon enough.
So I finally tried, and the drive didn't even show up. I even shucked it and connected it via sata and it still won't show up. I tried using the lsblk command and it would a bunch of nbd# blocks with 0 bytes to them. Might have been something else though.
I assume this means this drive is 100% dead. But is there any weird magic tricks I could try to see if it magically comes back alive? It's not like I could lose anything more at this point.

As an actual answer, I don't know for sure, but when it comes to data that you want to keep it's never worth gambling on "hmm am I SURE the drive is REALLY dying?? maybe I'll wait and see if it's fine". Because then if it's not fine and it dies, all your data is kaput. So buy a second drive, copy your data over, and heck you can even keep using the old drive for a while and see if anything else happens or even play around to try to fix the pictures getting wet. But you'll have all your data safely backed up on another drive (especially if you periodically keep updating the backup), so if the water damage turns out to kill the first drive, everything is safe.

For that matter, in the future, you should just do that in general, so that you can have a backup BEFORE your pictures get flooded. Or, if you're less lucky, before your drive just completely stops working one day and you lose all your files with no warning. Let a few corrupted images be a lesson in caution to you.

I have never studied the linux kernel but from what I've heard it's not only C, it's also pretty idiosyncratic C both because it's a 30 year old project and because the kernel requirements for stability AND performance are relatively unique. And in general kernel design doesn't always follow the way you'd write normal software.
I also don't know about you, but I've never met a person (including myself) for whom "studying" a project was productive, without any particular goal of something to do with that project. Instead, if you want to change something or implement some feature, that can guide your studying in a concrete way, and force you to figure out the details of the specific subsystems you need to touch, rather than just being able to skim the code at a high level.

All that being said, one thing it will definitely improve is your ability to read unfamiliar code and dive into big projects.

I'm a moron, on Linux, I used veracrypt to quick format and encrypt an external drive, and also bumped it to ext4. Ran fine, however, now I can't get it to mount because its no longer able to be discovered under /etc/fstab

fstab is basically mainly there for automatic mounting, either on boot or to be able to do mount /directory and it looks it up in fstab
if that's your problem all you need to do is mount /path/to/block/device /directory and it will mount that device on this directory without looking at fstab

however I'm not sure how veracrypt works, you might need to decrypt it first to "open" it and have it appear as a block device. e.g. when using linux-native encryption using dm-crypt, you do cryptsetup luksOpen /path/to/encrypted/file/or/device mapped_name and then it opens it and creates a block device /dev/mapper/mapped_name and you can mount that like I showed above. I dunno about veracrypt

It depends. CSM is "compatibility mode" for your UEFI to behave like a BIOS. (By the way, while it's a common shorthand, when actually talking about these things in detail you shouldn't call UEFI BIOS because it's just confusing. BIOS is the ancient standard. Since you've got the compatibility module, that means what your motherboard actually uses is UEFI, the modern standard.) The actual implementation of CSM varies a lot so there's no way to tell.

But you certainly can disable CSM and it probably won't hurt, so I don't see any real reason not to.

By the way, lots of people criticise UEFI for being bloated - for example, it often includes a built-in network stack, so your motherboard can literally connect to the internet without an OS. Some people consider this excessive, and I tend to agree. But enabling compatibility/CSM doesn't protect you from this, the motherboard still "launches" UEFI, and then runs basically a compatibility layer/emulator/thingy that implements BIOS, so old hardware that expects the old BIOS interface can run. But all the UEFI bloat is still running. The only way to avoid it is to buy pretty old hardware (definitely pre-2015, probably pre-2010, for high end stuff maybe even earlier), so if you've got a motherboard from the last decade or two that comes with UEFI then might as well disable compatibility mode (and all the extra bugs and jank mobo manufacturers might have left in there) unless your boot hardware is really old enough to only work with BIOS.

The drive seems to spin up. In Windows I can hear the connection sound but it won't show up in any file explorer or disk management. In Linux distros it won't show up in the file explorer or show up in other applications like gparted. Nor testdisk or ddrescue.

Windows and MacOS usually comes with everything for simple text editing, image editing, playing music and videos, using the internet, etc. If you need to do office work then install Libreoffice or find a cracked version of Microsoft Office.

Splitters don't throttle speed, they're completely inactive devices. They just change which pins and wires are connected to which. Any of them are going to be basically the same and behave the same unless you manage to track down someone with truly abysmal QC. What can cause speed issues is interference (either crosstalk within the UTP or EMI from outside of it). And there isn't shit you can do about that without replacing the wiring, which would negate the use of a splitter.

That said, I've used random Amazon splitters many times, and I've never had issues with them. Just test your throughput for a bit afterwards and if it seems off, check for frame errors. If you are getting them, bad luck has found you. Just get a cheap switch.

Yesterday I tried removing a windows.old folder using wisedeleter, my PC bsod'd and now explorer is broken

After I sign in screen is black with cursor for a few minutes before it loads in, windows menu doesn't work but the new settings works fine several minutes after the rest loads in.
Right clicking anything causes a freeze until it resolves many minutes later without showing the right click menu. This PC also doesn't load but regular folders work fine it also doesn't show my drives in This PC but it does in other folders.

Beside these strange issues everything seem to work mostly fine programs load, games work, movies and videos as well, and the browser too.

This was years ago with a much younger me. Back then I had the habit of "I can do it later", but later never came. Well that still happens sometimes but I digress. I may have not had the space at the time either, can't remember when I got my other external.
At the time it was working, but corrupted, and I could use testdisk from what I can remember. Maybe I'm remembering wrong though and it was already borked at that time. But I've heard of people pulling out drives that have just been sitting around and they don't work all of a sudden. Either way I do need to get another external as I suddenly fear the other one going out too now.

It was my first external, and at the time I needed space, and it was on sale. I wasn't too aware of the HDD model differences either and it's not like you'll know unless you look it up. I do remember buying the other because everyone said they came with the red models when I had more of an understanding. I haven't shucked it to check though.
Been looking at the red models, along with other NAS specific drives from the other HDD companies. I do want a NAS but the only spare PC I have is a Dell business model. I could probably throw a NAS drive in there, but no RAID. (Already got a dvd caddy converter but it only takes 2.5 drives and I put an SSD in there.)

You have to stick with the same kind of RAM, so DDR4 SO-DIMM in your case. Different versions of DDR are keyed differently anyway so you won't be able to insert DDR5 there. Also try to find your laptop's max supported RAM frequency so you don't overpay for sticks you'll have to downclock.

Odd because I also use chromium (ungoogled) and it usually only takes 2-3GB of RAM even with many many tabs. Some time ago they introduced this feature of de-activating tabs that you don't use, and it seems to really keep the memory usage under control.
Anyway, I'd say go for 32GB for general usage. 64GB is only really ever needed if you know you need it for specific things, like VMs, caching, ramdisks, huge in-memory editing, etc.

What model is the web claude using? If it's sonnet 4, it'll be the same LLM. (Claude code can also use opus 4 but only on the $100/month plan and it's not THAT much better at coding.) So it'll be exactly as good at reasoning.
In terms of actual practicality claude code is very very neat though, it can read files on its own and grep through your codebase to find stuff, which it's pretty good at - this is VASTLY better than just copy-pasting chunks of your code into the website interface. It can also suggest/apply updates, so you just review the diff it shows you and press "ok" which is also more convenient than copying back and forth from the website.

If it peaked at 75c max, is it safe to assume my cooling is adequate? CPU min was in the low 40s and avg under 60c.

Windows failed to automatically find drivers for it, Linux Mint had some visual glitches with the desktop, other distros did not. If I run SuperTuxKart, it makes a stink about my version of OpenGL being too low, but let's me play anyway. The racers don't show in the character select screen. Compression is based on repetition. "Encoded data" like photos, videos, etc are quite chaotic and don't respond to general purpose compression algorithms well. In effect, it probably just compressed metadata headers lol.
You need to save these images individually (a tool like irfanview can batch process but 10 isn't a huge amount) again as lower resolution, smaller color palette, lower quality JPG or a combination of these. It is limited to 1.4 in terms of resolution/refresh rate limit. Also it means no HDR. (but your monitor probably already doesn't have this, if it has 1.4 port anyway)
