I am led to believe that /g/ only praises Wayland out of contrarianism (same reason they think GNOME or Xfce are good interfaces).

there is no such thing as "wayland".
there are different graphical shells that still want to keep software compatibility between them, and fail, because tinkertrannies can't agree on anything, otherwise there wouldn't be multiple shells in the first place.

this is peak tinkertrannyism.

Wayland is not retarded, it's merely unfinished.
To replace Xorg as the next x-Windows system (as Xorg replaced xfree86 before it) Wayland has to have all the functions, features and abilities that Xorg does. In short, once every program written for x-Windows (in the incarnation of Xorg) can compile and run 100% in Wayland, then Wayland can be considered finished.
The real retardation is crippling one's program to get it to run on Wayland. Don't do that: once Wayland is finished, your program, as-is, will work, with zero effort on your part.

After using awesome wm for 10 years I reluctantly installed hyprland. Tried it out for a few hours and an xwayland window managed to crash my entire session and kicked me out to a tty and I lost everything. Not happened once in ten years of x11. Also tried playing a game and it would stutter unplayably unless I turned vsync off and played with the frame rate uncapped. Can't seem to recreate my awesome wm workflow in wayland either, because as far as I can tell there is no established stable protocol for windows reporting what workspace they're on and none of the status bars like waybar have implemented them. So you can only show the current active window in the taskbar, or every single one across all workspaces, which gets very cluttered.

Wayland is fundamentally flawed due to implicit sync architecture. The entire graphics computing world has standardized on explicit sync. Nvidia tried to work with the Wayland "people" for years, explaining their design is antiquated and conflicting with modern graphics API convergence (DX12/Vulkan/Metal). These no-graphics kiosk display peddlers of course ignored the largest graphics card manufacturer in the world.

People complain about Nvidia, but they were right. Everyone is now on explicit sync and Wayland has to plump hacks all the way through their architecture to try to fix it.

I only read the never ending series of threads on the gitlab between the devs and that one Nvidia guy who is basically carrying the entire effort on his back.

They fought against it for like a decade, then they took some more years to plumb the hacks through.

You do understand that these can be made on Linux right? Just walk task->mm for the task you want to inspect. It works the same exact way in Windows except it's a process handle and you have to attach to the process. This has nothing to do with Gayland.

As a Wayland hater who uses it exclusively now on nvidia it does work and with 3 monitors
Obs works only on Wayland on X it drops frames constantly like crazy both on recording and in game(reason why I only use Wayland now) only flaw on Wayland is no keyboard shortcut support and no window capture
On X dragging windows around lags like shit, on Wayland nearly perfect
I hate how sleep is often more broken compared to X, the lack of xkill, nonfunctional drag and drop, absolutely insane VRAM usage (4-6GB on desktop but its not much lower on X either, on windows is impossible to make it reach 1GB) that aside Wayland works more for me than X which is sad but at the end of the day as long as it works I don't mind too much.

Wayland is usable for me, shame X got so abandoned its breaking down on itself now, I wasn't looking forward to switching and the mentioned issues still annoy me quite a bit.
>>105696201
Games and OBS lag like shit on X for me, security I agree with tho, its lockdown bullshit, I wanna be able to have OBS or anything else read all my shortcuts because thats literally how they have to work. If this was Windows where I had proprietary shit I'd get this argument but on Linux everything is FOSS and trustworthy so I never ever want to have usability blocking features for a nonexistent security gain. Oh yeah on X and Xwayland GPU screen recorder can group recordings based off the process name just like ShadowPlay, super useful, native Wayland blocks that because of this modern security theater bullshit.

After fighting against it forever. Now they have a "protocol". But in reality explicit sync is still a second citizen buggy mess. You can't really talk about the truth regarding Wayland because everything is buggy in it's own unique and special way, including explicit sync implementation. If you don't personally use this shit, you really don't know the actual state.

Wayland is ironically building up a legacy of debt built around bad initial architecture decision, stubbornly defended for a decade, only try to implement an imperfect hacky fix. We have long since passed the sunk cost fallacy, we're eating opportunity cost on Wayland 2, now with an actual reference implementation.

If you ask Wayland trannies they shill security (which has resulted in an endless user usability mess) and fake features like vsync and mixed DPI, both of which are supported on Xorg in practical reality. I think Wayland has HDR but no color calibration.

Just because Xorg is old and stinky doesn't mean it doesn't work. It currently works well. Meanwhile Wayland is genuinely worthy of a business technology course on the dangers of letting morons bike shed by morons for 15 years.

PS. All that "even the xorg devs say!" is gaslighting stolen valor by glorified code jannies.

it's their fault that nobody listened to them doe. they're arrogant cunts with a "my way or the highway" mentality and thought they could just dictate things arbitrarily even though they're still the only GPU company who won't FOSS their drivers. the only reason they support wayland now is because some people are running their AIslop on linux and leaving their desktop drivers in a broken state would have made them look like idiots to a sizable minority of their customers.

wayland protocol and systemd are being designed for the same purpose, the end goal is to implement a unified, isolated platform to allow aggressive DRM measures on linux for Red Hat and Microsoft`s enterprise clients.

systemd hasn't hindered anything for me thus far. it does what sysvinit did and a ton more. most of which i've disabled at build time since i don't need much of it, but things like systemd-boot, networkd, user units, nspawn and the like have all been nice additions to my system. i like how quickly it boots and the uniform nature of its' tools. i can't think of anything about it that is worse than what i had before.
wayland on the other hand, i can't bring myself to even try much because as soon as i run a wayland compositor and feel that laggy mouse cursor, i close it and forget about it. not only have i not seen any benefit to using wayland for me, i have seen many disadvantages. at best at this point i could perhaps put up with it, but right now x11 hasn't let me down, so i just have no reason to use wayland

Oh yeah? For real, switch your kernel.
Try. It's possible. You can launch a DE like Xfce on BSD or OS X as well.

See what we mean?

No, the end goal is locking all DEs down to Linux instead of making them portable. It might not be Lennart Poetterings goal, but he is the useful idiot for some fat cat having that goal.

X is also cross platform. It's a cross. Can you see?

a de being locked to systemd is a separate issue to me using systemd
i don't use gnome for many reasons, though it apparently becoming systemd-only is not one of them, since i already use systemd. i don't know what i'd do if i used gnome and not systemd, that's something for such a user to figure out for themselves
i don't want to spend time thinking about how os-portable the software i use is. it's just not my problem. i'm a user, i use what i like and don't care for politics/drama. at most i read what i happen to run into to get an idea on potential future developments to aid in my decisions, but that's all.
being cross-platform isn't a reason i use X, nor is not being cross-platform a reason i use systemd

Fair point, it's probably not necessary to program DEs that way.

I'm kind of pissed that there is no distro with motif as theme which works OOTB.

Let that sink in, if you can. Like, how do they expect there to be programs on X, when no distro comes with the graphics for the framework to write apps for X for?

in fact, i actually like that we have something that takes advantage of linux-specific features.
freebsd has freebsd-specific functionality as well, so i'm sure there's software that only works there as well, and that's fine. if not for os-specific features/software, why even have separate os's? i'm pro-os diversity, as cringe as that word has become. not like winfags who can't understand why there's more than one linux distro

gnome is a special case. they seem to have that proprietary mindset where they have a specific, narrow scope with regards to how their software "should" be used. which is very different to most foss which is more about generally avoiding such restrictions where possible

in the traditional linux sense, it doesn't make any sense, but in a (You) sense, apparently it does, so take it and run. Idk honestly how it'd overlap with steamOS, probably a lot, and that might be a good thing. I'd dig that way.

No, I disagree. Germans have another case like this: Envy and jealousy. I understand that envy means you see somebody being for example lucky and you hate that. And being jealous means you see somebody being happy but you would be like them, but not in a malicious way. Germans only know one word here as well: "neid". The public calls german culture "Deutsche Neidkultur" quite often.

I like what he said here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocl30fwpYgc
It's an "remigrierter" amerifat, but what he says in that video is true. Germans fucking suck as a people.
