Why donโ€™t people use ChatGPT to translate anime? I uploaded the Japanese .srt file of an anime, and the result surprised me
itโ€™s even more accurate than the official translation

Niggers like you are so annoying, senpai is a Japanese word. When we localize, we translate the things so that everyone can understand them. No, senpai isn't a correct translation for senpai, and no, there is no English equivalent, so we have to get creative. That's just how it is, we respect our language and our audience's time by not making them search terms online. Plays on words are changed or deleted because it's IMPOSSIBLE to translate. Some terms have no translation, so we have to change them. Not that your brain is big enough to understand this anyway, you think there is a localizer lobby that "rewrites" the shit you consume to "push a political agenda". Putting foreign words in a translation is an insult to both languages.

Modern "fansub groups" are comprised of ESLfags that can't speak Japanese OR English. They are mostly working from official shit translations and stuff done by actual fansub groups decades ago. Although many are resorting to MTL now and official translations are being done that way as well. Real fansub groups are no longer allowed to upload their work to the most popular public and private trackers nor are they allowed to be listed on places like seadex. Since these places are being camped by the ESLs and their faggot friends living in America that have nothing better going on in their lives. These people basically go around hunting for popular series uploaded by groups long ago and re-ripping them from modern shitty BD source. Then they steal the old script, edit out all the "wrongthink" and use a bunch of shitty filters to ruin the art work. Then they upload it under group names that are listed at the top of the automatic torrent downloader applications for media servers. Then they beg for donations. For a lot of them it's their only income and since they live in the third world they can actually live off of it.

Anytime an actual group takes an interest in a show they spread FUD about them along with their friends that work for places like CR. Fansubbing has been dead for a long time now. At least since the original nyaa was killed.

The LLMs are bad at translating Japanese to English because they do not understand context, humor and they are trained by faggots. We messed around with them a year ago just to laugh at the results it shit out. That isn't stopping official distro houses from using them though to fire trannylators. Of course idiots cheer this on.

You are a great example of why it's happening. You do not understand moonrunes yet you think you're qualified to have an opinion on the translation itself. Like most idiots watching and shitting out bad rips these days.

No one takes any pride in their work anymore

I see one of the fags I mentioned is already here. They're in every thread about "fansubbing" on this board, /a/, reddit and elsewhere. Since they have nothing better to do with their time and have google alerts setup to follow any and all discussion on the internet.

I highly encourage you to join their Discord servers and lurk. You'll see how bad things really are within just a few minutes. I personally don't like discord but I made an account just to verify some suspicions I had because I had noticed the overt censorship and "localization" for political reasons. Imagine my shock when I found out most of them are actually people that were dumb enough to cut off their own dicks.

They even had hidden channels like "#straightphobic" in their servers where I assume they cry about how no one likes them or something. I was going to LARP and weasel my way into one to see and archive everything but I have better things to do with my time. After I first mentioned it here months ago I checked again and they'd deleted it. So I'm sure something spicy was probably inside. Maybe I should I LARPed my way in and brought back something funny after all.

These people are fucking pathetic and I wish we'd cut off their third world shitholes from the internet. I will never understand why someone that doesn't speak English as a first language, doesn't understand Japanese and claims they do not like Japanese media chooses to "fansub". Of course I know the answer: money. Money ruins everything.

T. Fansubbing since 1997. Still using Amgia to time.

>Still better than modern translations though, especially considering it's on demand and quite fast.

We picked up a show around this time last year to see how quickly we could still work without sacrificing quality. The official translation of the show was using a really horrible MTL process and had zero typesetting.

Our translator would do the rough translation in about an hour on his lunch break. That's dialog, signs and everything. Our typesetter turned around a full typeset episode in about 24-36 hours depending on how heavy the sign work was. I'm not talking about basic 2-3 sign episodes with just an overlaid image either. I'm talking about sign heavy episodes that required tons of work and editing to get *just so*. Encoder/editor working an tandem could filter/edit an episode and encode it in about 24 hours. Could have gotten that down to 10-12 if he had a newer computer. He was doing it on a 10-12 year old Intel CPU. Actual editing/filtering part was about 1-3 hours depending on content. Then final translation check+checking final encode for release was about 2 hours tops. Timing was maybe an hour total.

So we could have it out and ready to go in about 24 hours if we really rushed. 30ish hours at a normal rate and maybe 48 hours tops if we ran into problems or someone was busy with life. That is a respectable amount of time to do the work I think. That's actual quality work. If we just shit out an .ass script with no typesetting we could do it in 2 hours tops. This is with a 2-3 man operation. If we had more people we could have gone even faster probably.

In other words. If they'd just hire us instead of these shitters they're using to do the official work at CR we could turn around an episode faster than them with better quality of work (signs are actual signs instead of just text overlays) and better translation. We'd probably be willing to do it as side gig for whatever they're currently paying too.

>there is a reason why "all according to keikaku*" became a fucking meme.

Ah yes the age old excuse these fags always point to. They claim some joke sub or some shit group represented every fansub group ever. This is always their excuse for producing garbage now. It's just "localized" garbage these days.

T/L notes are not a bad thing when they are called for and not abused. People are watching content from another culture because they want to learn about the culture. We localize some things like jokes and shut. Our translations aren't overly literal and we put in the effort. But sometimes things just don't translate.

You know what we don't do? Insert personal opinions and politics into our scripts then slap on honorifics for a second subtitle track and all it good. We use honorifics because they convey meaning and it's better than attempting to deal with that meaning every time they're used in a show. You can't plan for episode 12 having a character switching honorifics for a love scene pay off or something when you're doing episode 1. We use Senpai for similar reasons. The viewers know what it means and they're expected to know.

Which is the point I was making before. These faggots basically take a 10+ year old script an actual translator did. Remove the honorifics and other Japanese terms. "Localize" it. Remove wrong-think. Then shit out a bad rip with their modified script. Then beg for money.

If anyone complains about it being shit they slap on honorifics on to their shitty script and call it good. It's really lazy work. I can't believe people send them money.

The real reason they don't use Japanese terms and TL notes is because _they can't understand the language_. Much less the subtleties of the language.

For context. The first is the official translation from streaming networks. The second are the "schizos" from /a/ that shit out a script by ear in like one hour. The third is the official TV closed captions from Japanese television. Who everyone involved had access to a couple of days later.

The most popular torrent for the show opted for the first translation just to own the fags on /a/ or something.

They're in a big gay club and thing big brother loves them.

What is funny is none of this bullshit is happening in non-English translations from what I can tell. I'm not fluent in Spanish and French. But the little I've seen has a pretty faithful translation of jokes like the above. They're being produced (or at least distro'd) by the same streaming networks. So that tells us there isn't some agenda coming from the top. That or they either don't give a fuck about pushing politics in those countries as much as in English.

I do know the people working on translations for the streaming companies that distro to America are the absolute shittiest people that used to be in the fansub scene before it went legit. Everyone else that was doing it to learn the language and/or for fun that went on to have a translation job actually translates things of importance. Like business meetings and documents for the military and that sort of thing. Since those jobs pay a really good wage and require you to live and work in Japan itself (or at least get a lot of free travel).

So what was left are the exact kinds of people you don't want translating anything at all. It's kind of like how the people that sign up to be mods are always power tripping faggots. Since anyone with sense doesn't want to do it and/or has better things to do with their time.

I don't feel like digging up other examples. Anyone with an entry level knowledge of Japanese can easily find many examples of things like the above. There is a for sure "political agenda" going on with modern English translations of Japanese content.

I don't follow. Why wouldn't it change if it does a better job and doesn't leave stuff out?
You'd probably have to specifically prompt it to 'localize' this to get it do the shitty editorialization.
But by default it's probably better than a lot of anime subs just because they tend to take too many liberties.
One issue I could see is it losing some context by having stuff drop out of the window when doing a lot of translation.
But other than that, it seems like a win.

This stupid show caused an uproar last year because all the major streaming services tried to shit down the viewer's throats with a horrible AI translation. The first couple of episodes were so bad it was unreadable. I don't have copies of those laying around to compare against but I do have this from episode 3.

By this point they were paying a human to clean it up. Show would air mid-week in Japan so fansub groups had a chance to compete against the streaming companies who were screening it on Sundays (I think) in the west. So let's compare them.

The first one is CR which may or may not be the AI script slightly edited by a human. Could just be a N5 level translator too. They at least translated the sign but they didn't put any effort into type setting it. The second is from Amazon's streaming service which I'm sure was mostly done with AI and barely edited for grammar/spelling. The third is /a/ doing it for free.

The third was released 24 hours ahead of the official English streams. The problem isn't is AI good enough to replace the horrible lazy translators we're already using. The problem is how come they didn't hire anyone competent in the first place? We shouldn't accept one form of shit over another just because the shit we have now has been stinking up the place for 10 years.

I kind of remember reading some doujins in nip then found them later in English, TLd with chatgpt and then edited, the result is rather poor but it does the job. It isn't much better than JP->EN done by an ESL.
Doesn't help that English can't accurately convey all the info (unsurprising given that they're different languages but it still has to be mentioned). Just learn nip if you want accuracy, you also get infinite material that way.

>Just learn nip if you want accuracy, you also get infinite material that way.
This is the best advice honestly. The truth is people that are willing to do this stuff and would do a good job don't really have the time in the first place. Then add in the fact that they're flooded out by ESLs and MTLs flooding every distro hub as quickly as possible to farm donations it isn't surprising that no one competent wants to continue working on things.

The above example only got some quality fansub work because the way it was released actually allowed good groups time to release something before official channels. But even then the threads for that show were flooded with at least 2-3 people trying to shit out an episode as quickly as possible. They openly admitted to using AI to translate and not being native English speakers. But a bunch of people watched those anyway instead of waiting 1-2 days for a decent release because most viewers now don't care about quality and instant gratification. They don't care if the translation is wrong. They don't care if the subtitles don't have proper spelling+grammar or the fact that they make no sense. They don't care about signs being translated or typeset. They don't care about TL notes and learning about jokes based on Japanese puns. They just want their shit fast no matter how bad the quality.

I've seen so many groups/people drop a project simply because they were flooded out by ESLs on major sites like mangadex and nyaa. It didn't matter how fast they worked or how much effort they put in. They can never compete with shit pushed out as quickly as possible by someone that doesn't give a fuck about anything but being the first to have a release of a new chapter or episode up. If you try to keep those people out they always report you for DMCA violation and burn everything to the ground. Or in the case of nyaa they gatekeep access to prevent anyone else from competing with them and their horrible releases.

No one is checking these faggots work. That's why they're being allowed to openly piss on the audience's face and get away with it. They are obviously phoning it in with minimum effort and no oversight.

If they were held to any kind of standard they wouldn't be getting away with it. They certainly wouldn't be on twitter everyday talking about how much they hate the fans, Japan, otakus and the content they're working on. The translation isn't even the hard part. It's everything that goes along with it and checking things before you ship it out.

The only reason these faggots are starting to be replaced by AI is because the Japanese publishers figured out they can push up crappy translation to English viewers without having to pay a middle man. I'm sure soon the entire process will be automated. It'll be run through some kind of LLM and maybe spot checked by someone working in Japan. Then it'll get shipped out to all other regions digitally and broadcast at the same time instead of being broadcast on an hour-few day delay.

Nuance and consistency will still easily be lost and terminology will not be consistent. You might be able to get away with using it for manuals as long as you ensure terms are consistent, but not stories.

Using AI would actually be worse in most cases than those overly localized translations, because at least those were TLd by an actual translator.

I fully agree with that. LLMs do an okay job between closely related languages, like Swedish and English, but even then I still see major fuck ups pretty regularly in machine translated text. For JP -> EN it really is godawful and all these people complaining about translations really just should sit their asses down and study moon runes. If they spent half as much energy on that they would soon be experts.

sick of the "we're translating for people that 0% about the source materials culture" it results in the lowest common denominator awful subtitles. it used to be if you wanted to get into a fandom like anime or kdrama you had to put some work in a learn at least some specialized words. now they just completely wipe all cultural references from subtitles.

I'm really sick of the delusional EOPs who get upset about getting translations 20 minutes after a show airs and not having to wait 6 months for a game to come out in their country anymore.

If you cared, you'd know the language. You don't care, you just magically expect soulless paid work done by the lowest common denominator FOR the lowest common denominator to be good because "uh when I was 12, fansubs used to be good!", when they weren't, they were awful too, but they just didn't talk about trannies every other line, and you had to wait a few days for them.

Translations have always been for the lowest common denominator. You deluded yourself into thinking you were somehow outside of this bracket despite being firmly inside it and consuming the same shit as them, and this broke your brain because you thought you were an elitist but now lil zoomie can watch the same shit you're watching on crunchyroll so you're not "special" anymore.

>how and when are the raw jap subs released
On TV.
>are they from the studio or fanmade,
The studio, obviously. I have seen some chink subs before but I believe those might have been low quality OCR gibberish, rather than actually fanmade.
>and how can I grab them?
Lol. Lmao, even. The chinks are completely incompetent and almost universally incapable of hitting the "rip subtitle" button on their ts software. And BDs never have subs.

Your options are as follows, from most to least reasonable:

1. Hope the show comes to Netflix. Netflix are the only platform in the world with an autistic fixation on subtitles, and almost everything in Japanese has Japanese subtitles.

2. Find an IPTV provider that leaves the subtitles on. I know of one, and they only do it on AT-X.

3. Pray that a ripper works out how to press the "rip subtitles" button, and that they actually note that down in the nyaa upload. This is incredibly hit and miss, and there are raw providers who literally just switch their source week to week so a few episodes will have subs and then they just won't have them anymore.

4. Pay a jap to let you set up a slingbox in their house. The best option, but obviously not realistic.

It's outrageous that you have spent at least the past DECADE whining about an issue that will never be fixed. Because that's how long CR has been a major player, buddy.

If translation quality mattered, it would've already improved. CR would've gone out of business a decade ago, replaced by the mythical "better quality" translation work. The majority of shit eaters don't care, and you get mad that you're eating the same shit as them because YOU don't care either, not really. You just want the market to cater to your whims, with flimsy arguments like "b-but it's not fair!". The free market has proven that there are no depths that EOP shit eaters will not sink to, so go campaign to them instead of people who are completely removed from the equation.

An LLM can't understand context, all it can do is directly translate and direct traslations are terrible.
You probably think it's "more accurate" for the same reason, and not being a high profiency speaker of both languages you have no basis for which to judge it's accuracy in the first place.

an entire script could easily fit inside an llms context, you'd have to structure it weird what i'd do is:
>establish a general dictionary/database of the show/characters/genre with character profiles including things like speaking style, mannerisms, etc
>generate story arcs per episode with character emotions noted in different sections using image processing on the screenshots of what's going on to determine character mood/expressions
>go through with a rough translation that repeat with the related context making sure it matches specific character speaking styles and the expression at the time and general mood

you'd probably need to refine it and figuring out the right flow/context would take a while but this would work, probably be better than actual translators and once it was set up be easily automatable to run on anything

i think this is just shit people who say who don't actually do ai stuff, large context will always be noisy, dynamically creating small focused prompts and just having several concurrent prompts w/ sub agents or whatever works 100x better and has way better quality now.

In the future we will just have established architectures for breaking things down and building out sub prompts, you could probably do this now desu. but just like
Given X construct context models for it's constituents to model it effectively. Break down things like writing style, dialects, character (you could actually just have a model of each individual character with an individualized sense of the episode and shows history pretty easily) then use that to construct the script and use each level to verify it.

I agree in the future you will be able to likely get that at once and have that all be dynamic, but I don't see how we'd get away from actually doing that under the hood. Even if you could do it in a true one shot I don't get why you'd want to since it's a "pre-generated" not live thing and you'd likely want to incorporate the audio/dialog emotion from the voice actors and video as well.

This would be relatively trivial do actually organize and do it would just take a while rn. I bet if I threw this into claude code it could actually set this project up though.

Knowing Japanese makes me superior to EOPs.

If I was to go on an imageboard filled with people who spent all day grumbling about how piano players aren't playing the songs they want to hear, knowing how to play piano makes me superior. Obviously, if I'm talking to a random guy on the street, knowing Japanese doesn't make me superior to him. But on an imageboard surrounded by retards who generally desperately wish they know Japanese? Yeah, it's a mark of basic superiority. EOPs are the kind of delusional retards who spend their days consuming poorly translated content while whining about it, people who are too stupid to help themselves, and that's why they're objects of derision.

>Why donโ€™t people use ChatGPT to translate anime?
Because there is a degree of nuance that it doesn't understand, because it is fundamentally a mathematical word predictor rather than a thing that knows.
Anything is better than watching a netflix or cruchyroll sub though...

>it means the same thing. stop being autistic and actually watch anime instead of complaining about it on a basket weaving forum
If you'd actually watched that episode you know the entire point of the scene is her calling him a girl and him freaking out about it.

But if you did that you wouldn't have an argument for why it was only changed in the English translation due to the fact that a tranny might get offended.

It would have shit out "Girl sitting".

>What is the 2025 equivalent of Coalgirls?
Take your pick all modern "fansub groups" are garbage. Hope you like politics with your anime.

If they spent half the time actually studying as they do coming here to flex that they know 5 kanji from their gay flash card application they might actually produce something of value. But probably not. Since the only reason they do what they do is to make people mad. It's just about all they talk about on their discords. How angry they are about the average viewer.

Just look at them sperging out ITT right now. Be careful. One of them is a hot pocket so you can expect to get banned if you post screenshots of what they say in private.

It's a 5 second shift of timing. If you don't know your tools what are you doing it for in the first place? It isn't my fault modern groups are garbage and refuse to do the minimal work to add the close captions.

Wait for BD then. Most include at least two CC tracks. One for hearing impaired that even translates non-spoken dialog

Is there a quick convenient method to ai translate doujins locally
I don't wanna have to figure out how to get text from the image to paste into the chatbox or whatever

Everything generated by AI is an IP violation, the existence of AI hinges soley on our inability to prosecute big tech and foreign companies for mass plagurism.

The second you, as a private person, use AI, you are liable to be sued. The content creator cannot sue chat GPT but they can sure as shit sue you.

The whole of an anime is IP protected, every part of it. the images, narrative, artistic theme, creative world-building, the text, everything.
If you have altered any part of it, you have also plagiarized it. you have damaged the creative integrity of someone elses IP, republished a derivative work without permission, and you have no legal defence.

Traditionally artists rarely sue because
A. your plagiarism isn't significant
B. your plagiarism did them no actual damage
C. your plagiarism wasn't for financial gain
D. they thought what you did was cool
But these are in no way legal protections, if the artists wanted to sue you they totally could.
And if you use AI to plagurise artists work, don't be surprised when you get issued a lawsuit by a robot, who's automatically identified your work as a plagurism.

I have IP protection on several hundred stock images which I license commercially and pay a bounty of 15% to a private company who monitors for unauthorised use. And they will essentially sue however many of those people it takes to recover the cost of monitoring for violations. So you better pray that at least one corporate uses my clip art without buying it, because the fine/lawsuit the company issue them is the only reason you as a user aren't issued one.

But increasingly the company is reporting AI related plagiarism, where the user is claiming to have no access to the source material and crying that chat GPT gave them IP protected images without any warning and that they somehow have the presumption of open liscence on work that's not theirs. this is like kicking a vending machine and claiming any can that falls out must have been free.

These are the laws we have. I get you don't like IP laws and I've been pirating shit for 30 years myself. But if you sidestep laws they jail and fine you. When Zuckertard and the rest do it they not only get rich as fuck but also morons like you cheer on it.

And not all IP is equal, because some is capitalized, some is corporate, and some is privately held.

My warning about AI is that the reason you will actually get sued, is because you have committed the worst kind of IP violation, against the person most likely to actually go through with a lawsuit.

The clipart I make belongs to me, it's not a corporate asset. Stopping people stealing my IP costs me a lot of money, and I can finance that only through prosecuting the thieves. and if the WAY you stole my IP is through AI you are the first on my lawsuit list. because
A. you didn't even attribute me as the original author, as far as anyone knows chat GPT was the author
B. you've violated a ton of my IP at once by mismashing it, it's not a single reproduction.
C. It's not a faithful reproduction, you didn't just copy paste it, you mangled it which damaged my brand.

This is why Disney goes after people who lewd Disney characters. There's no money in it, they do it because you've caused massive damage to their brand by republishing an offensive mishmash of their IP and claimed you were the original author.
