Microsoft will now offer free Windows 10 security updates until October 2026 to

>consumers who enable Windows Backup or spend 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points,

the company said today.

Windows 10 uptes otherwise end in October 2025.

The company will notify Windows 10 users about the ESU program through the Settings app and notifications starting in July, with full rollout by mid-August.

>Both free update pathways require a Microsoft Account,

which the company has increasingly pushed in Windows 11. Business and organizational customers can still purchase up to three years of ESU updates but must pay for the service.

>Note that a paying customers is not forced to create a Microsoft account.

Windows 10 remains installed on 53% of Windows PCs worldwide, according to Statcounter data.

If you (use) install windows updates to begin with you're niggercattle.
I never installed a 10 update out of spite that they removed the update controls.
The only thing that matters is software support which is only affected by service pack not every tiny update.
It really just goes to show how stupid nu/g/ is that they actually care about windows update (or rather still use windows despite how unusable its gotten)

People are surprised about this?
Every single other version of Windows up till now has also had paid extended support. It'll be generally available for a bit, but after that you'll have to pay a fuckton of money for continued support and maintenance.
If you got enough money you can get MS to supply you with Windows NT4 patches even.

Not for consumers. And THIS was the first time AND Microsoft said "pay us $50 + 10 + 10 (60, 70) a year to get THREE YEARS MAXIMUM" for non-Businesses.

Consumers went "fuck that, I'm sticking with 10" and MS is now panicked.

Yes, and then made Windows 10 (11) and said "whoops! Windows 9 (10) as a service was a mis-spoken thing!"

Watch as Windows 11 (12) releases in five years and they try to dustbin Windows 10 (11)'s mistakes.

>Why are you calling them a version earlier?
Because 7-8-9, hurr hurr hurr. But really, skipping a version to match OS X was stupid.

Not anytime soon. Microsoft is probably panicking over how hard it is to get users to shift over to Windows 11, even if they do have compatible hardware. Not to mention that just the idea of some manufacturers shifting over to SteamOS for gaming handhelds is enough to make them shit bricks despite being such a small segment of the overall PC market.

My wife tried to tell me that when she gets her new PC, shes going to use 11 because its what shes used to from her work laptop. I told her straight up that if she does, I absolutely REFUSE to do ANY tech support for her and she will have to pay someone to do it. That same day, she needed to print out a shipping label. She couldnt get her work PC on 11 to connect to the printer, either through wireless or wired. While she was waiting for the new copy of the software to download and install, I connected my 10 PC that had never even been connected to the printer before to the printer and had the label printed out in less than 5 minutes. Shes now going to be installing a MASSGRAVE copy of 10 on her future PC.

Fuck microsoft. Ive never paid for a single copy of windows in my life and I never will. Ive used windows from 98 all the way to 10.

>Not to mention that just the idea of some manufacturers shifting over to SteamOS for gaming handhelds
MS has a bigger problem than SteamOS on handhelds. Valve is allegedly working on its own living room console system. Which means all the conveniences of a console - e.g.. a pre-set range of hardware simplifying compatibility and minimizing esoteric driver issues with games; "start it and it just works"; etc. paired with the backwards compatibility of a PC and the open-endedness of modding.

That thing will invariably grab traction, and result in many PC gamers realizing a Valve console is just going to be cheaper and easier to use for gaming. Which means whatever system they use on the side is just going to be something low-power that can run a browser and some office applications. It's going to make Windows as an OS largely superfluous for consumers, which majorly gravitate there for DirectX and games and brand name.

But nowadays, they'll just as easily move to something else as long as it has a decently sized screen and a good browser.
Windows would basically be relegated to a specialist market for professional office use. Like for complex call center integrations with CRM software.

they will eventually just make them regular free updates as the date gets closer (when they realize no one is switching) because of the amount of bad press that they would get if there was an huge windows 10 hack while so many people are still using it.
