Starting in Computer Science
Is this a good book to start with when learning computer science?

It's a good book to understand your computer. It won't help you much in getting a degree since nowadays it's barely about understanding the device you are supposed to control.

Absolutely. Check this version out then decide if you want to stick with Lisp or something a little more contemporary.

I marathoned the first few pages. It was cute how it compared writing code to magical spells and rituals. I think most people say it's dated though.

what you guys learned from it? I saw the first pages and found it to look like about the basics. Not saying it's limited to that, just curious, as it has a significant amount of pages to read just out curiosity.

I didn't learn that much since you induce most of it from coding for a while though the last chapter's still the GOAT in a lot of ways, but I read it for the pleasure of reading it. it really is the minimum gold standard for competent programmin

the exercises from the first chapter filtered me. I have been out of school for more than a decade and don't remember much about the math, and the exercises were like, what the fuck?

People who recommend these books are usually not very good in my experience. Same thing in /sci/ where people recommend math books. Smart people just do whatever they are interested in from any source available.

You need to be at an undergrad level of math before opening that book as every example uses some math concept to make it's point. Also mathematicians can't code. And the college who made that book dropped it from the curriculum.

Learning to program for the first time from a book like this is like learning calculus from an analysis textbook.

No it's not. They replaced that course with one that teaches Python about 10 years ago.

It's dogshit, there is nothing that this book teaches you that you couldn't teach yourself faster and cheaper using the Internet. It was written for MIT students in the 90s, so they don't use it anymore. They use Introduction to Computation and Programming Using Python.

It's nice to see that MIT realized that functional programming has never produced anything of value and wrote it off for the dead horse it is in order teach a language/concepts that are used to ship real stuff.

If you want to learn computer science then do a computer science source. The MIT CS courses are available for free. Books supplement curriculums, not replace them.
