If pic related exist how is that there aren't 100 Windows shells like DEs on Linux?
>buy old E510 for cheap
>want to restore an older computer for the fun and nostalgia
>owner formatted the hard drive (SATA) so I go to install windows XP with my super old dell reinstallation disk
>no dice, probably not bootable
>download media center 2005 ISO, since that's the OS that came with the computer originally
>burn it to a DVD
>it either blue screens or says there are files missing in the middle of setup initializing
>if I use rufus to get a USB of the ISO it'll just blue screen before setup even gets to a prompt
>since it's a SATA hard drive supposedly XP didn't natively support SATA
>download a bunch of drivers for the computer since dell's website still has them up, some are SATA drivers
>attach them to the ISO with nLite

Am I retarded or is this a hardware issue? Is the HDD just faulty? Owner said before he wiped it, it booted fine. Computer has no issues otherwise. I've tried multiple different ISO downloads btw.

I've been trying to install Arch on a really old Mac with Intel graphics. The problem is that after I select the boot mode, all I get is a black screen.
I already tried adding the nomodeset parameter and another Intel-related parameter I can't remember, but it didn't help.
Not sure if this is useful, but older ISOs and the Void Linux ISO worked.

Here's my stupid question:
Why can't people use their TV as a monitor (and vice versa)?
Its bigger, costs less, and is dual purpose!
>inb4 muh goriliion hertz
There are high refresh rate TVs too. Plus not everyone is a gaymer. Plus most monitors max out at 75 hz anyways
>>105730510You can't. Your ISP dedicated a static IP to you. If it was dynamic turning off the modem for like 5 minutes would be enough. Talk to customer service to learn if they offer dynamic IPs
>>105730510>>105730676some users with dynamic ip addresses will have to wait 5-10 minutes with modem/router off and hope for the best when you switch it back on again. some ISPs will give you a new address as soon as your device reconnects to the network. this varies between isp and type of connection.

Bought a new ssd to install loonix and I heard I should unplug the old SSD with windows on it then plug it back in after the installation. Installed Linux mint then did all the updates and drivers, plugged in the old SSD and suddenly it doesn't boot up. No keyboard light or anything ;-; pls help
>>105730973>I heard I should unplug the old SSD with windows on it then plug it back in after the installationI never heard of anyone saying you should do this
>plugged in the old SSD and suddenly it doesn't boot up. No keyboard light or anythingTry unplugging this SSD again, or unplugging the other SSD to see if it boots from the Windows SSD. If neither boots after that, it could be a hardware issue.
Supposedly Windows tends to delete the BIOS GRUB bootloader partition used for Linux distros but my Mint install doesn't use BIOS/MBR GRUB and yours probably doesn't either if you're using a new SSD, but having two different EFI boot partitions could be tripping things up too.
Can you access BIOS/EFI on your computer? (usually by holding either F2, F8, or F12 after pressing the power button) Try that and see if there's an option to choose your boot drive.
Generally you should be able to install Linux on a different drive/partition without having to remove the Windows. If you can still boot from the Windows SSD on its own, I would suggest doing that, plugging the Linux SSD back in, reformatting it, then leaving it in with the Windows while you boot from your Linux installation medium, the making sure you install Mint on the right drive. Hopefully then your computer shouldn't have any potential issues with EFI boot stuff.
>>105730784>>105730837I think a lot of providers give you basically "semi-static" IPs, where you keep the same address for awhile despite any resets.
I have no idea why, but I've experienced the same thing. I'll have the same IP address for potentially months and then suddenly it'll switch to another. It's never consistent when it changes either.
>>105731213>If neither boots after that, it could be a hardware issue.Neither seem to boot but I'll try doing that again.
>Can you access BIOS/EFI on your computer?Nope, I cant even get a display out. The fans spin, my mouse gets power but my keyboard does not light up.
Thank you so much for the reply, the manual says if shorting the CMOS pins doesnt worki should take the battery out and short it again so I'll try that too with both the SSDs. Also do you know if my keyboard should light up if I disconnect the GPU and try start it up? (I don't have integrated graphics either)

>>105731485>>105731213It boots into mint after I took out one of the RAM sticks and unplugged the SSD I'm pretty sure it's the ram stick causing all this. I'll figure that out tomorow, thank you sm for the help anyways.
Where do i learn arduino the fastest?
>>105731485>Also do you know if my keyboard should light up if I disconnect the GPU and try start it up?If you're talking about like numpad/capslock lights, those are usually handled by the OS so it makes sense they shouldn't be lighting up if something is wrong with your boot.
Keyboard backlights on the other hand I think are usually part of the keyboard itself, so no keyboard backlights could mean a problem with hardware or power.
>>105731622Ah, well in that case just see if you can also boot from the Windows SSD and just check the RAM socket or look into getting new RAM sticks. Glad I could be of some help.

Picrel is my current display setup. Display 3 is a TV and then Displays 1/2 are the monitors at my desktop PC (running Win11). you don't even have to trust the reviews (but you can), you can sort the mice by size, which is really nice, and see youtube videos of the mouse itself to see if you like it.
these are all mainstream mice, though, which is i guess good and bad. like you could find something on here, find it on sale, and then just go to bestbuy and pick it up. people are getting more into chinese mice / budget mice like aj159 and some others that i'm forgetting (vxe, attack shark) that you could get for like 20 bucks. maybe buy off of ali express? there's pros and cons there, of course, too, but this stuff is kind of all the same plastic from the same duff pipe
>>105734167>>105734287>>105734573it still works, but barely. the only thing is you have to embed as a url from an external source (most people use catbox but it barely works half the time). embedding images directly doesn't work because 4chan strips it.
if you aren't seeing images that are embedded "properly" i don't know what to tell you. if you're using gay, then it's something with the script that they either don't acknowledge or refuse to fix unless you pay them crypto to keep the ban evasion stuff up and running.
there was also some kind of feud a while back where someone else forked it and the original script dev got pissed about it and it's been a whole thing.
point being, don't even bother. Literally the only thing you can catch these days are just holdovers from people saving shit directly from boorus (so the script picks up the hash in the file name and duplicates it directly) or people using it for sound posting. no one is posting "questionable" material because it's super obvious to spot, and most mods/jannies caught on to it a long time ago, and even if they are trying to do it, it just doesn't work half the time.

at first I got picrel error. after changing the @match from boards.4chan.org/* to https://boards.4chan.org/* it now works flawlessly
>>105742683I use Brave (android)
Is there an android OS for regular PC hardware that has the app store and everything while being up-to-date? Searched and couldn't find anything. Just curious for turning a minipc or something into an android tv box.
I switched to fiber internet in my home. Now I need to bridge an air gap, where I cannot lay an ethernet cable. So I need a wifi-to-ethernet device, which I want to connect to my fiber router via wifi and then connect to my LAN via ethernet.
What device should I use? I would be good to have at least 3 eth ports so I don't have to use an additional LAN switch.
My own question:
Does anyone know of an HDMI 2.1 splitter/switcher setup with ~5 inputs and at least 2 outputs? KVM switches look interesting, but seem to not be tested for the non-PC devices usecases. they sell 5-to-1 and 1-to-2 adapters, but i've already had problems with the 1.4 5-to-1 splitter i have so that'd be probably worse.
>>105746339android doesn't really have a setup for PC hardware in any real way. most android TV devices are just cheap phone SoCs. neither does android really stay up to date on its own, OS-wise at least. emulation would be probably doable, but not exactly optimal or easy.
the most flexible TV-like setup would likely just be a windows box with a browser and a little wireless kbm/trackpad combo. there's XMBC and stuff like that, if you want to use a controller, with its own set of drawbacks.
>>105743730that's a GPU issue, likely. either driver or hardware or software. sounds very strange, so i'd probably start by booting a linux ISO and seeing if it still happens there.
>>105737456firefox and probably chrome has a webpage download function. an autoclicker program would be the most flexible solution, but might need some manual parts here and there. and there's always at least trying wget on linux.
>>105735284could be hexadecimal.
>>105734847this is an extremely bad idea for a variety of reasons
grab whatever numbers you can get, even just shift-click ctrl-c the webpage or the CSV you can download, download a local model, and paste it in there with some questions.
>>105733339everybody loves dicks. why would you get rid of everyone's favorite thing?
>>105731635buy a recommended book and read it cover-to-cover.
>>105730640you can do whatever you want, but the DPI is much less and the space involved for a KBM setup is annoying with such a large screen. wireless peripherals do work, but they still tend to fuck up past a few feet, especially if they don't have line of sight to the dongle.
also, OLED burn-in if you're buying that.
>>105746831Basically you just need a couple of 4+ stream wifi APs with uncucked firmware.
my graphics card died suddenly and so i thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to try the baking in oven trick because i have nothing to lose. two questions though:
1. i can't remove some plastic parts like output ports because the soldering work is beyond my capabilities to resolder. is it okay to just leave them?
2. i heard about soldering fumes but realistically how bad is it for the oven? getting a separate oven just for this is pointless
3. what the fuck actually happens to the card during baking? i'm not convinced that it's just the reflow of the solder that does the trick
pic unrelated
>>105747330You should be more worried about lead flakes getting into your oven. Just buy a cheap heat gun from a hardware store and do it with that.
>>105747015>>105746831Now went for the GL.iNet AXT1800 Slate AX.
It seems to support WiFi to ethernet bridge mode and it runs on OpenWRT. It has 3 eth ports.
>>105747390i didn't think of using a heat gun. will do that
one more question: how likely it is that it's just some fuse? i'm not sure how to recognise them
I want an e reader, preferably e paper. Should be able to read my collection of pdfs on my laptop I've saved over a decade. Stylus is a plus but not mandatory. Thoughts? Kindle can't read pdfs right?
>>105747448anything with fixed page size will look like shit on a small kindle. epub and all that are text files with some formatting. big ones are expensive. aren't an optimal usecase, but it's doable. there are conversion tools that are as accurate as you'd expect.
What does it mean when a website is acting a little weird all of a sudden, like search suggestions not popping up or given random errors sometimes?
When I use VPN it suddenly works as it would normally do.
Does this mean they "flagged" my IP adress as a bot somehow? Idek why but I'm really confused
>>105748012Probably routing issue on your ISP's end. If you have one address you specifically have problems reaching do a traceroute to it and send the results to their network support.

Thanks anon.
i googled google nest mini firefox and linux for help but everything links to unseless crap. Is there a way to play firefox audio over wifi to a google nest mini speaker with chromecast. I can use spotify to control it but I want to listen to music off my system and youtube videos
How hard is it to train your own local ai image generator? Is still a pain in the ass to do with an AMD GPU? Last time I checked I didn't even know what the hell I was supposed to do.
how to i connect my pc to google chromecast type shit.
>>105748150Thanks, I did not bother contacting support but my traceroute showed one or two asteriks (*) in one hop, which from what I've read could indicate network congestion or packet loss resulting in a overloaded router.
I suppose I will wait and see if the issue will persist overnight.

Is there no video upload site that lets me upload videos from R-18 hentai games that have questionable content? Was trying to use xvideos but the sign up process has me stuck on validating my email address since I use cock mail. Then I was thinking of putting it on Iwara but they don't allow gameplay unless it includes dancing or making HMV of the gameplay of some type. I cant deploy a cable from my parent's router to the tv my dad has in the kitchen.
Thats the tv where he watches football as is the one that i bought him the iptv for so that my mom could have the bigger tv in the front room

The cable on my FT1 is breaking, such that I have to twist it to get some sound.
I have a spare (pricey) cable I bought for a set of Hifiman HE400SE.
Those hifiman plugs for both L and R are TRS cables (2 lines).
The ones for the FT1, both left and right, are TS (1 line).
If I plug those TRS cables into the FT1, will they work or blow up and burn my house down?
I just can't find easy replacements for the FT1.
I'm in the market for a new television for my living room, current one is 10+ years old and only goes up to 1080p, and I want 4k minimum. I've narrowed down the choices to either an OLED (LG C4/C5, depending on what's on sale) or a Mico-LED (Samsung QN90D). I want to go OLED but I'm concerned about the reflectiveness because the living room is generally bright with southward-facing windows (not directly behind the screen, but 90 degrees to one side). Even if I were to shutter all of the blinds it's still decently bright.
Is there a best way to go about testing whether OLED will be an issue for this room? I'm thinking of just getting the television from a place that allows for returns within a decently-long period of time, like 1 month.

>>105755276Peak brightness is very important, not just because of the sun but also for HDR content. I haven't checked out all the tv options in a while but I remember samsung steadily falling behind the competition each year, especially with chinese brands like tcl and hisense offering genuinely good non-oled TVs.
So I'd suggest always looking up reviews that go into this in case you're not doing that already. There was this asian guy on yt doing high quality tv reviews and callibration guides, forgot his name though.
I don't own oled so I'm not sure how much sun reflection matters, but in general you can always stick anti-uav layers on your windows which will reduce sunlight as well as room temperature. I got one in my room and it works really well, it adds a certain blue-ish tint so your outside view is not completely removed as opposed to complete blackout curtains.

If wireless is important for you then you might want to upgrade to a Intel AX201 card, 8821AE are usually mPCIe so the mPCIe version.
Or atleast a AC7206.

>>105762023If you are willing to go the distance, keeping things at the same temperature/rpm (not load) (fans are somewhat expendable if you have more than one)is the best way of preserving things, that being said you also don't want to run it at or near it's rated temp for this
The larger the heat cycle the shorter the part lives (generally each cycle doesn't do much though)
And if you want uptime incase of failure, more CPU fans, with excess capacity (~125/150% rated TDP OR underclock), as well as lower bit densities (16G if you don't need 32G) might help (does not do anything if the 32G is just 2 16s (or QLC/TLC SSDs) strapped together as is probably the case with SSDs)
Most of this is for really going the distance though, and assumes no defects

Recently, a dark spot has been appearing similar to the one in the picture on my laptop. Sometimes it dissapears, most often when I restart it. It's not particularly bad for now but is it something that can spread to the other parts of the LCD? I don't mind replacing it but It's a bit old. I will have 5 years with it in about a month. Not to mention some of the other problems I have with it like the speakers sounding cracked or fans ocassionally rattling and sounding like a diesel engine
>>105764508looks like a backlight issue. you have to replace it
>speakers sounding crackedcheck if they're dirty and change your audio drivers
>fans ocassionally rattling and sounding like a diesel engineclean them up. if that doesn't help then the fan bearings are worn out and then fans need to be replaced also

I'm using a tethering app called PDAnet+ to give myself internet from my phone while on vacation, because the Verizon jews didn't tell me they charge extra for tethering and mobile and even then only give you so much tether data. The problem is I have to have their package on my computer which is only for Windows/Mac. That and they want me to pay to not turn off every hour. I've seen people use hacks to make it work on Linux for single port things such as the browser.
Does anyone know a way to tether an android to a Linux OS without Verizon jews knowing or needing a shady app?
>>105766250Seems flooded, idk
No fun allowed.jpeg stuff
>>105766654Wait what the fuck, if you enable tethering in just normal android Verizon will know? How does that even work
There's https://github.com/garywill/linux-router, I have no idea if it will work on android, but assuming you have root you could try it (if not then first step would be to root it)
>>105761908>>105761936>memory training>calibration timesIs this some sort of psyop
>>105766855No, AM5 and recent Intel motherboards have horrible DDR5 memory trace layouts, for a reason there is a huge push to replace DDR currently.
Its only once and after that you are good unless you reset BIOS.
>>105766816I'll look into that. Default Mobile hotspot and tethering is disabled on my samsung and it tells me to spend more money on my Verizon bill. I looked into it and they can tell if the packets don't come from the phone so a lot of these unofficial tethering app changes the packets. It runs through debugging mode and a USB.
They apparently get notified by outside packets and rooting by an app called My Verizon that's built into these phones after researching a little.
PDAnet+ works but I need my Linux. All I can do on Windows is play video games :(
>>105766918Would a VPN help somehow maybe?
If you root, you can uninstall My Verizon. Do you think that'll get you blocked? Consider installing a VPN-based adblocker (I think Blokada is the main meme? but don't take my word for it) and seeing if you can block that app from network access to see what happens, but I'm not sure if you can do that with VPN-based blockers.
i have a dead external drive windows doesn't recognize. i tried some recovery tools but nada. what should i do with this drive
>>105766994unfortunately rooting isn't an option. I'm on a warranty and insurance payment plan and it'll void it :(
I'll see if I can do a VPN. GPT thinks I can just packet hack the phone anyways

>>105767061Honestly anon I'm sorry to say but it does sound like you have a cuck phone on a cuck plan. If you're not allowed to root it, that means it's not your device, it's Verizon's and/or Samsung's and/or Google's, since they are the ones allowed to administrate your system while you are not.
Good luck on your PDA+ thingy. Stupid question maybe but have you tried it in wine?
>>105766918Hmmm, perhaps you could use adb to disable(not uninstall) the service? Back up your phone beforehand just in case of course

You have a desktop computer around? or atleast a USB to SATA adapter which i guess not.
Connecting it directly will tell you if its the drive that is bad or the small PCB.
If its the SATA to USB PCB then you can get a new enclosure for $5-10 or just get your data out.

>>105767293You say it doesnt appear on Windows right now.
How did you check? Usually the only 2 ways to check is Crystaldiskinfo and partition manager.
Nonstop clicking is bad.
Random clicking is normal on Seagate drives because they are low quality in general.

>>105767244Oh you're right I forgot I could just try Wine on PDAnet's desktop app.
>>105767264Every year it gets harder to tether from your phone to a desktop thanks to "abuse" and carriers not wanting you to get more expensive plans, also newer android/IOS versions and phones report that you run hotspots to carriers and even disable the option.

>>105767471Just post pics of where you are stuck at, all you have to do is take the drive out (DO NOT DISSASEMBLE THE DRIVE) and connect it to a desktop PC directly.
>>105767384I believe it, but I've never really seen it around here. Must be an amerifat thing mainly I suppose, just like datacaps on broadband and other such things.
Plus this again only seems possible on stock carrier installations of Android. I've literally never seen a carrier plan around here that wouldn't allow you to root your phone or do literally whatever with it, and I'm pretty sure if you've got root it should be trivial to circumvent tethering restrictions.
>Its extremely rare for a carrier to block WWANs because for them it will look like you put the SIM on a old tabletI mean, that anon says he's got a preinstalled carrier app at the system level and that's apparently working as a watchdog against him doing bad goy things like tethering.
If you install it into a laptop there'll be no such app.
If a sim works in a laptop then it stands to reason that it should also work in a rooted phone.

I want a 2.5g network switch.
Is there any reason to not buy Ubiquiti's Flex Mini 2.5?
Can I configure it via local software (with no other ubiquiti hardware, and no "cloud" shit relying on external servers for configuring it) or is that not actually possible?
Can this software if it exists run on Ubuntu, and, after configured, be closed and never ran again unless something goes wrong making me launch it and troubleshoot or does it have to run and phone phome to a program every X days to "remember" its config?
I want something cheap for 2.5 since I got some systems and a basic file server with onboard 2.5G and the next PC upgrade will have a 2.5G or a 5G NIC and I just want to get the fuck off gigabit, in the next few years I will be looking at 10G or 100G but for now I would like to spend under $100 if possible since this is going to be temporary and I just want to jump from ~100MB/s to ~250MB/s (hdd speed) transfers to do the obvious and cut out one painful bottleneck.
last year around this period, my PC was very finicky in starting up for a few days - the CPU fan spins, the GPU lights up, and POST etc for a second but then the PSU clicks and it all goes off
after a few power drains and unplugging/replugging the power cable it would then work and perform normally, and then it was fine for the next ~12 months at least, until today
today it was finicky like described above but even power draining and letting it sit for an hour didn't work, until i just started flicking the power switch at the back off and on while pressing the start button until it stayed on
everything is detected in bios fine and works fine so i dont think a component has died (if one had i dont see how it would have worked normally since last year and as I type this), i've run memtest before and nothing was out of the ordinary for RAM, everything's a normal temperature, swapped where I plugged it in on the wall, the fans are all spinning, no weird burn smell inside, all the cables are plugged in properly etc etc
i never have crashes or anything either while running under stress like gaming
the only thing I can think of is how last year it started happening the morning after I updated my PC right before shut down without letting it rest after drawing a lot of power, and last night i also initiated shut down before closing all windows etc and unplugging something in the USB port I usually don't have in while shutting down
then i guess given the time of year the electric grid in general is under strain because of the heat (utility companies have been asking people to use less power doing peak times for a while here now), so maybe that all overlaps with a poopy PSU that needs things to be just right to stay on?
i'm assuming i should just replace the PSU (Aorus AP850GM) with a more reliable one, unless someone can diagnose this as stemming from another component?
How do I properly architect internals of a library that implements the parsing and the logic for a network protocol (that runs on top of TCP+TLS)? If the data is important make a Linux mint USB (No you dont need to install Linux, you can run Linux from the USB and Mint is a windows clone that is easy to use), and copy the data out because Linux wont freeze with read/write errors like windows does.
>>105768680>its probably dyingThe maybe I should just buy a new one. Do you know any brands better than Western Digital?

>>105768790NTA but I've used chopping boards for my laptop.
>>105768622Rising off the floor ensures you aren't physically blocking vents. A few inches doesn't really help with dust at all.
In general you want it about 3' off the floor or an additional 2' above any obvious sources of concentrated dust.
Dust floats, but the inescapable fact of life is that it also settles. When things move dust gets kicked up and becomes airborne again but more of it remains towards the floor than not and the higher you go, the better.
The 2x4 method to not obstructing vents is a starting point but if you can, every few inches more will do you some good. If possible, consider mounting it to the underside of your desk horizontally.
