No one knew who metux was or cared about his political views until he dared to modernise X11. Corporate Linux knows they can't beat X in actual functionality, so they'll just accuse superior FOSS of being Naziware to make you use Wayland.

Call me when Wayland can do all the following:
>VNCs
>record your screen without any compromises
>PEEK/POKE
>use an application's hotkeys without having the window active
>work with VR headsets
>drag-and-drop between applications
>work with NVIDIA cards

We need an alternative to freedesktop org to set new standards for a stable platform target based on Xlibre. Otherwise we will always be tied to redhat X11.
Once the dust settles we need something new for desktop IPC, DBUS actually gave me PTSD. The documentation on freedesktop is so poorly written and I spent days having my whole desktop crash trying to get an interface working. This is probably behind the notorious KDE crashes, because GNOME works directly with redhat and has access to the esoteric knowledge. I've never had to deal with such an over engineered poorly written IPC before.

IBM/Redhat wanted to forcibly kill X11, but there were still people who wanted it alive as an option and continued development on it. The lead developer forked X11, said "I don't care about identity politics" in the readme, and the left lost its mind interpreting this as being the most evil Nazi thing ever spoken and the left then proceeded to create drama out of nothing.

Yeah all the actual FOSS alternatives need to band together and create new standards outside the corporate sphere of influence.
Frankly we don't just need new standards for linux or the desktop but computing as a whole. New OSes, new Web, new communications standards that are actually standardized protocols, not walled gardens, and so on.
Open Source, as it stands, is not free. It's becoming an oppressive dystopia.

The usecase of remotely controlling a computer is self-evident. Maybe your friend isn't good with computers and needs you to take control to fix something.
>usecase for recording your screen
To show what's happening on my screen.
>usecase for PEEK/POKE
Scan your memory for variables and change them. You can use this to make singleplayer games harder or easier depending on your preference(e.g: If you find that 100hp is too easy, you can try playing a game with a max of 1 HP).
>usecase of using an application's hotkeys without having the window active
This is a key thing for recording your screen: sometimes you to record your screen IMMEDIATELY and alt-tabbing away from the window of interest in order to pull up OBS is unproductive due to a lack of global hotkeys.
>usecase of VR headsets
Playing VR games.
>usecase of drag-and-drop between applications

It may work but its retarded to keep defaults, you need to edit configs to optimize your system, you need to edit configs when you install programs or WM/DE. Wayland requires adding kernel parameters to even start.

You know that the xorg server arch uses is more than 2 years old (even though it uses a release that came out a few days ago). This is because the latest release of xorg server is missing updates from master branch over 2 years ago. This ABI issue applies to latest xorg server, not just xlibre. For example tearing was fixed over 2 years ago in xorg server master but arch still doesn't have it.

There aremany good things to say about Haiku, and in particular I like the window decorations. The problem is not technical but that the developers are still noodling around in small circles, not really getting anywhere.
Also the last major upgrade was a total mess where nothing was announced, the links were b0rken and error messages poured in, leading to concerned users flooding the message board with error reports and only very late did the people responsible fess up. It seems they have some inner hidden forum where things are decided outside the view of users.

>>105739139
It is. They're trying to make it a "X11 luddites that refuse to updoot to wayland" thing.
When really this is about Linux desktop developers revolting against Redhat acting as a shadow Microsoft. Xlibre is the spiritual successor to X11, it's not some desperate attempt to "go back".

it uses meson so its pretty easy
export PATH=/opt/xserver:/opt/xserver/bin:/opt/xserver/include:/opt/xserver/share:/opt/xserver/lib:$PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH='/opt/xserver/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH'
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/opt/xserver/lib/pkgconfig:$PKG_CONFIG_PATHset your paths if you want these variable to persist, you'll have to set them globally, PKG_CONFIG_PATH is the only needed for building, specifically for building xorg drivers, like libinput (which is required).

meson build/ -Dbuildtype=release -Dstrip=true --prefix=/opt/xserver -Doptimization=2
This configures the build , if you are missing any dependencies , this is where it will show up, you can check what options are available with "meson configure build/"

then you can compile and install with ninja -C build/ install

>by what metric GNU/Hurd is better than SerenityOS
By absolutely any metric you could think of a part from the number of developers metric. GNU/Hurd gives you an environment that is functionally identical to Linux with most of the apps and services working out of the box. It also run on real hardware
>by what metric GNU/Hurd is better than BSDs
This is more tricky. Itโ€™s better since it is a multi server OS created from the ground up with virtualization in mind. But is it really a substitute for BSD? I donโ€™t think so: BSDs, particularly NetBSD has its strength in the simplicity of the implementation. Also Hurd and BSDs share roots in their early developments, as such the code bases are highly cross-compatible. The virtual memory manager is practically the same, even more so in the MacOS version of BSD. So much that Hurd is moving to use NetBSD drivers

X can host Wayland in a non-root Window.
I don't mind if all the shitapps want to talk Wayland protocol as long as my root window is X. It should work like launching stuff in Xephyr.
As a bonus, I'll finally be free of CSDs for good since all the CSD shit will get a container window with an actual handle.

I don't think you could do this with a whole window manager.
But for individual clients there's Weston on Xephyr and cage (which supposedly has an X backend).
So if Firefox went Wayland only (and they didn't leave the code in to toggle it back on) we would have
Xlibre<-Xephyr (:1) <-Weston<-Firefox and Xlibre<-Xephyr (:2) <-Weston<-VLC

dunno but the whole reason for wayland is that no one wanted to maintain it no more so xorg was effectively dead

this thread is way too ecstatic about beta non releases. wait at least a month or two before installing it.

also the x vs wailand fighting is stupid. it is good red hat has what they want now. a secure display thing. and it is good someone forked xorg so they can't block it no more. so rh can use it's own thing which they made for themselves and everyone else can continue to use xorg. and nvidia makes their drivers for freebsd so it's all ok.

I am not stating that the political views themselves are the reason. But it is pretty clear from reading the discussions around this that the main reason for wanting XLibre's inclusion is political in nature. For example
> not wanting to get injected with experimental medicines with no benefit? he is a hippy, so what.

is the kinds of political statements that has no bearing on whether or not it XLibre is included in any distro.

In 2014 I would have agreed with you. But over the last decade, it has been made abundantly clear, by all of: individuals, assorted groups, and corporations, that politics IS the driving force behind a lot of their decisions.
They have made it perfectly clear. If you are ANY (not all, not even a majority, just ANY) of the following, you need to neck yourself and not use their software: anti-vax, white, straight, not gay enough, think trannies smell bad, not want to fork over your entire paycheck to black people, etc. Up to and including being called "rotten flesh" that needs to be culled out of the ecosystem.

This is the official stance of Red Hat AND SuSE. I am not joking or exaggerating.

And so NOW you want to complain about politics?

Yes its political, and thats a good thing.

Because of archlinux I've gotten so used to systemd that I'm not sure I would remember how to use initd, and that is if I even would want to go back...
All my servers use systemd too.
Don't get me wrong, I've certainly had my problems with systemd, but in the end it's pretty convenient, isn't it?
