My Xiaomi bar died this year after 4 years. I cheaped out and replaced it with a Quntis bar from Amazon. It's fine. It's one of those products you don't understand until you have one.

personally I think the angle is off a bit. if you have it on a big monitor that is several inches higher than the desk it will throw light on your body. then my pasty white stomach can be seen in the monitor glare.

I'm considering getting one. I have a lamp on my desk currently but I'm planning to upgrade to an ultrawide monitor and if I do I won't have space on the desk for the lamp anymore.

As for the criticisms:

>inb4 just turn on the ceiling light
Ceiling lighting is overkill for most uses. Ambient lighting will almost always look better and more intentional
>Just open the curtains
Sometimes screen glare is an issue, but even if it's not, sometimes people need to be on their computers after it's dark, especially in the winter when it gets dark early
>Just use the backlight of the monitor
That can cause eye strain, especially if you're having it so bright that it's able to illuminate the desk sufficiently by itself. Also again, it doesn't look as nice imo
>overpriced
Yes, I agree on this one, especially the benq ones that are most recommended
>can't mount webcams above it
Depends on the model of webcam. There are workarounds presumably, like different ways of clamping it, or putting it on something higher than the screen bar

>>105736622
It's got nothing to do with the keyboard you retard. Or the monitor backlight. You don't have to reply to threads you don't understand.

Anonymous No.105736960 [Report]
That style of lamp is useful if you do stuff at your desk like taking notes, painting, or soldering. I have a cheap one (~$40) from Amazon and it works fine, no problems with screen reflections. The control dial is kind of shitty because it doesn't have actual buttons, but it works.

For curved monitors, do you need to get light bars that fit the curvature? Even if a regular one can still fit, would it illuminate things incorrectly?

I realize a lot of you live in 3rd world countries so you dont have the space for a proper sized desk. I got a literal desk lamp and here I am on /g/ seeing people trying to get fucking small ass lamps for a problem solved by 1800s tech.

Literally the opposite, a lightbar is an unnecessary luxury because it costs mutiple times the cost of the average desk lamp, hence why people are saying it's a ripoff or they should use overhead lighting and the monitor's backlight.

It helps reduce eye strain, it's one of those things you see as retarded (they kinda are) until you try it. It's a lamp but it's positioned in a way that doesn't flash the screen or you, it's really nice

I ended up using a full-blown 100W video light mounted on my monitor arm pointing to a A1 sized white cloth reflector (mounted on the same arm). Without the lens. Much better and softer than these stupid bars, and it also doubles as a great webcam light.

>i shit you not most of gen z don't know how to touch type
This is mindblowing, when I was in school in the 90's typing was a class. Everyone was taught how to type, with the internet being so ubiqutious these days I don't see how everyone doesn't know how. Heck my kid self taught herself just because she wanted to talk to her friends. It's not even like it's super difficult like learning another language. It's like a couple hours for a week or two at most. It's just getting a bit of muscle memory, I couldn't imagine even typing out this post having to henpeck looking at my keyboard and the screen back and forth.

I turn on the lights as well.
Sitting in the dark with a bright screen in my face is just too uncomfortable.
With the lights on I can stay up all night if I want.
I considered something like in the OP, but why bother? Just turn on the lights...

Yeah no you're full of shit. Anyone autistic enough to constantly sit in the dark can touch type in some way. I do 100wpm using WASD as a home "row" and blind-pecking with one finger on the right because I never learned proper home row, and it's fucking retarded but still touch typing.
That, and backlit keyboards have existed for much longer than this lamp. And those, in turn, are still useful whenever you want to press a key in the dark without moving your hand(s) to any kind of default position first. Admittedly, some will just reflect enough light from the monitor that you won't need any more.

On second thought, it applies to both. It's just that getting the lamp just for that would be overkill.
