Continuing the discussion on this. So Chroma is going to be a distilled model now? This is one of the parts of Flux people complained the most about. No negatives and harder to train, all for merely a 2x speed increase. Seems retarded.

What the fuck does this even mean. You need some kind of teacher model so that you can compute the unconditional noise prediction, so that you can construct the CFG difference vector. Does he mean the model itself produces its own unconditional prediction, which then goes into the construction of the target the model is trained on? That also seems fucking retarded, you are basically partially training the model on its own output.

This guy is just making random shit up as he goes. I don't think the model is ever going to improve beyond where it currently is. The only hope at this point is that when it's finished, somebody else just finetunes it normally and fixes it.

NTA but you're right I think. This is what all the step distillation code in his github is about. He's literally step distilling the model ("fast"), training it normally at the same time ("base"), merging those 2, and also then merging with a separate high res trained version repeatedly.

I'm really loramaxxing to test what loras actually improve the output, what ruin it and which ones are just snakeoil. Turns out a lot of "bad" loras that can change faces in i2v like with fusionx or produce grey noise for the first few frames actually work fine if you only use them at full strength for the first few steps and then tone them down.

It's not the fault of loras that they can't fix Flux dev.

A lora can be great to add or strengthen concepts that you want and the base model doesn't deliver, and ALL concepts in the base model become heavily generalized when training, that's inevitable.

So for the best transfer of an artstyle, a person etc, using a lora is great, it cannot however fully fix core problems in the model, like plastic skin, botched genitalia etc, which is why a model like Chroma with loras will be so much better.

kontext is bloated and gimped, by the time the community fixes it we'll have a better alternative from china. this kind of model is simply not production ready, more optimizations and non-slopped training are needed. instead of eating scraps from the API table, I'll continue to use t2i models with mature tool chains and freedom.
