Is it true that a certain segment of the Linux scene seethes at accessible distros with intuitive GUI because they want Linux to be complicated so they can feel smart for using it? Or is that just a /g/ meme
Anonymous No.105756437 >>105756744 >>105757109
Yes. When you are an autistic permaNEET, typing line noise into your meme distro half-hourly to keep the root FS from self-destructing is the closest to "achievement" you will ever experience in your so-called life.
The problem, as you correctly identify, is that freetards mistake this for real achievement, leading them to think they're actually smart.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. I'll stick with

Mint is overshilled despite being worse than Ubuntu. That's the reason I dislike it. I see several Mint shill threads weekly on this board. I think Ubuntu is a great distro and it's accessible. Mint just takes Ubuntu and enshittifies it. Literally what is the use case of Mint? Is Ubuntu too mainstream?

Accessible distro -> Ubuntu
Bleeding edge distro -> Arch
Autism -> Gentoo/Artix/Parabola/Hyperbola/NixOS

There is no reason to use this no thumbnails in file picker Ubuntu knockoff.

No, it's more that we're sick of seeing beginner-friendly distros being recommended as if they're the best choice for everyone, and are aware that in many ways it is holding the Linux community back.

If I had never used any distro but Mint, it's likely I would've gone back to using Windows by now. I suspect most of these Linux users who quit and went back to Windows/macOS are people who only used these beginner-friendly distros. Mint doesn't really offer any of the actual advantages of Linux like freedom of choice, knowing how your own system works, utilising the command line, etc.

Mint is better, no gnome, no snap, more software in the repo.

What does Mint even do differently to makes it so "beginner friendly"? As far as I can tell it's basically just Ubuntu with Cinnamon.

I like Cinnamon because it's basically just open-source Windows. The UI is basically the same. I've been using Mint on my main machine for four years now.

Mint is essentially just Ubuntu with the Cinnamon desktop environment, no snaps, and a few minor tweaks.

KDE is closer to Windows and doesn't use outdated gtk with no thumbnails in file picker (you know, a Windows feature).

ubuntu's repo is bigger than the arch for people with skill issue distro you posted

It's not reinventing the wheel, it's building a system tailored to your specific tastes. None of the pre-built distros are going to match your personal preferences exactly. Why compromise when you can simply make your own perfect system?

Anonymous No.105757004
>>105756982
It isn't though. There is no realistic scenario in which you can't spend 3 hours building a system that will last you for years.

But regardless, if "least effort to set up and use" is your sole criterion, you are better off using Windows or macOS.

Pretty much this, I'd prefer if mint was a bit more up to date but not dealing with all of the trannyisms that come iwth Debian/Ubuntu is pretty based.

>>105756976
Because setting up an arch system with cinnamon still takes longer and is more autistic than just installing mint and removing some of the bloatware.

Okay, that's fine. Nobody's denying the existence of very casual users for whom Mint is well suited. If I needed an operating system for my grandma who just wants to check her email and browse Facebook, Mint would be a good choice.

But since you're on a board dedicated to discussing technology, there is a general assumption that users here are serious about computers and care about how their system is set up.

Yeah, I don't know what the fuck he's taking about. The only thing I've uninstalled is libre office on a child's laptop.
Maybe he just wants a version with no media players or something.

Actually, a check list of apps to include on install might be nice, but I haven't seen any distro do that in my limited experience. Switch out rhythmbox and celluloid or whatever...

Available literally everywhere. Also nobody knows why cinnamon devs made a distro, their DE is good and their work is valued even without a distro.
