I think you have to have a good-ish quality CD drive, and then enough specific individual discs that you can obtain a clean rip from, for the software to then be able to calculate the "offset" of your drive so that it's able to guarantee future rips are accurate. And calibrating mine was a pain in the ass, it took me trying out a lot before I found enough that were among the validation set.
