It's probably due to the overreliance on cloud servers for saving documents, mixed with the fact that most tablet-based operating systems are very locked down and therefore harder to fuck up.
Its either that, or they just moved over to tablets because navigating the OS feels snappier and faster compared to the nightmare that is using Windows 11 on a low end laptop.

Smartphones have been a thing for over 15 years, doesn't explain an exodus over the last 3 years. I think it's mostly Mac and Chromebooks, and the fact that the Win11 abortion has been pushing people away. I've been an Apple hater for decades, but I got fed up with Win11 so I bought a Mac and I love it. If Valve pulls off the Steam OS general release they might get even more home Windows users to jump ship. MS has corporate by the balls though.
