How are the Russians always on top of all the programming contests (GoogIe Code Jam, Hacker Cup, TopCoder Open, etc.) but don't have any tech companies (almost all of the top tech companies are in the USA)?

Not saying you can't have a company in Europe, you just can't really make a startup, 99% of European companies came to be when regulations were lighter and survived until today. Either that or move in from the US or China after growing your first few years there

That would be chinks nowadays. But to answer your question, it's because Russia is a horrible business environment. One day you have your tech business, and the next day you lose it due to a raid by an oligarch or the mafia government. Plus, Russia doesn't have VCs, except the oligarchs. And the latter will rape you, unless you move your company quick enough out of the country and won't get later assassinated.

Because in countries like Russia the only prosperous entrepreneurs are those that are closer to the governments. Russia has a lot of potential and slavs girls are very cute, but they are governed by a literal retard.

Second part kind of causes the first. A lot of insanely talented Slavic kids don't have anything to aim for (bad startup environment and companies that don't compete with china/usa on cutting edge technology), so they just grind cs competitions.

this might be true quantifiably, but most of these companies barely have anything to show and just do some shitty outsourcing work. qualitatively the eu's tech companies outclass the russian ones by every other metric (scale, capital, revenue, innovation, the global reach etc).

underdeveloped countries cannot compete, because they have inferior tech (this means the end product developed in these countries will be more expensive while having lower quality), and that makes them even more under developed non competitive over time as the technological gap increases.

this is really simple vicious circle caused by "free" market. the only way to break it to use socialist policies, like china does.

Russia has its own search engines, social media etc. that are actually popular with the locals which is more than can be said for other European countries who stick to American and Chinese platforms. Business software is booming rn because of westerns companies leaving or being seen as unreliable. It was always pretty insular though, and even more so nowadays. Some Russian services are popular in former Soviet countries though, marketplaces, Yandex's AI and streaming stuff.
