>>105773636not even a 5head, this is at 11 or 12
I hate Terraform so fucking much
>WFH since covid with same company, been employed since 2018
>company is leasing a very expensive office space for the CEO who "cant stand working from home"
>CFO gave a notice during our weekly that the company expects the 10 or so workers who live in my area to start coming into the office 4 days a week starting 9/1/25 because our CEO wants "more engagement"
lol, nah, I don't think I will
>>105773633Canada just started laying off construction workers. Instead of that just work and study harder than the rest of the people you are competing with.
>>105773849The first time I tried to learn Terraform, it was for architecting something that I couldn't even test out because I didn't have enough privileges to apply it
It was awful
Gonna be entering the American web dev market soon. I got 9 YoE in Germany - will that count for anything? What am I in for?
I don't think I can justify investing any more effort into applying for jobs. Need to change careers or do something completely different. It's been a good run though...
>>105773972>Gonna be entering the American web dev market soonNo you aren't, you're going to be entering the lobby of the market that's filled with thousands of other people.
>>105773935hot take coming thru ''''architecting'"' is a cope someone did not understand the requirements and/or the capabilities of current day hardware or simply optimizing for jobsec. When you have machines with TBs of RAM and hundreds of CPUs what is there to architect?
>oh lawd, I'm babysitting 5 CRUD wrappers im gonna, im gonna archite-ack.Users are trained to accept their interactions to take seconds, you can process a billion rows in that time.
>>105774278Cool story, bro. Too bad it was IOT-facing and ideally completely autonomous
>>105773979>Electrician>More work than I can handle>More money than I can count (because I'm sort of retarded)Getting through the apprenticeship is pure unfettered ass, but once you're licensed you basically just print money. Sparkies are rare as rocking horse shit and being a white one you can literally see the look of relief on customers faces when you show up in your clean overalls and sharp haircut.
I even took on a utility room rewire for some old lady for free because it was an absolute fucking mess and the poor woman showed me bank statements showing that she was basically broke and wanted to work out a payment plan with me. 3 days work and she fed me like I was her favourite grandson and told me she'd recommend me to all of her friends and keep quiet about the free work. Already got an easy job lined up off the back thanks to her recommendation that'll make up for the shortfall.
Also being a subbie is amazing fun. You get to work with some awesome people. Ever went to a metal concert for a headliner band because the main contractor is the uncle of the lead guitarist? I have. I started when I was 36. I'm 41 now and I'd never go back to web development. Office Space was right.
>>105774313How did you make ends meet during your apprenticeship?
>>105774313I was considering swapping to being an electrician but circuitry was never my strong suit in physics class.
Do you recommend general or specialized? And is it true that weekends/overtime is where the majority of your pay comes from?
>>105774313I share the *learn a trade* sentiment but
>you basically just print money.we need numbers. How much money / work?
>>105774313Aren't you supposed to be able to skip the apprenticeship if you already have a STEM degree? I looked up the rules the other month when I was doing some DIY on my house (although the conclusion I came to was that I just won't get a permit for what I'm doing.)
>>105774597NTA but I doubt it, at least here in Aus you need specific certs. Now an EE degree might get you past a lot of those certs but you'd still need to go through the process and then there's the mandatory work experience.
>interview with hiring manager
>find out the position is 5 days on site
>ask him what facility he's at
>"oh i'm fully remote"
never before felt the urge to hang up during an interview except on this goofy ass
rules for thee not for me
give me a break
>>105774790Good man, stick to your guns.
>>105774790just entertain him and sharpen your negotiation skills. You can ask for remote or justify a higher compensation if they want you to commute physically. It is a rare opportunity. If you don't want to work there there is nothing to lose to begin with
>>105774790have you tried shitting on your hiring manager instead?
>Sysadmin
>Want to get aws certs to transition to the cloud/devops
>Also want to play vidya after work
Need help in balancing them. Also, what bootcamps/training is the best for AWS SAA?
>>105774917Have you tried going into a bootcamp for pooping?
>>105774919better for pooping
I live in third world European country and I've finally saved 100k euro.
What should I do anons? Is it enough to quit tech and return to being NEET for the rest of my life?
I inherited some money and I've been asked by my uncle if I want to run the live bait store he owns in the countryside and I'm going to accept the offer. Before I leave I want to make everyone at work, specially the higher ups, hate me while still performing my job greatly so they actually have to pay severance.
I'm open to ideas but so far here's some of what I included in my routine
>Spent countless hours reading every protocol and I've embraced Judge Dredd mode
>Task not properly reported? Not gonna do it
>Teams meeting with a proper description? Ignored
>Cold calling over teams? Ignored
>Someone caught red handed while not following a protocol? I write in the Teams general with the title "PROTOCOL VIOLATION ALERT" with some siren emjoi, providing proof and openly pointing the culprit
>Always call out manager, CEO and boss when they drop buzzword or talk about stuff they have zero knowledge about
>>105775829I've always done at least some of these things. Could be why higher ups always hated me. Heh.
Make sure you never attend any company events.
>>105773889I wonder what the real reason is. Is there some kind of tax incentive for leasing the office space and saving commercial real estate and zoning?
>>105775802That gets you 8 years of freeloading in a cheap eastern euro country. In the west you need 20x that to sustainably retire assuming the market doesn't fuck up too much (50x should be good without depending on the market).
>>105775886Rent is tax deduxible for the company. Fiduciary duty says you have to cut it if you don't need it, but its absence makes it harder to raise funds because it paints you as not a serious company.
>>105775886You think the real reason isn't that the CEO is personally bored and lonesome and wants his own little office kingdom to stroll around and bug people at? I promise that is in fact the real reason.
>>105775886Yeah I had a feeling. Nobody would do this if they weren't getting paid more for it.
>>105775829>PROTOCOL VIOLATION ALERT
>>105775860>Make sure you never attend any company events. Why not?
>>105775930That's even worse.
>>105775952You said you wanted your higher ups to hate you. Not attending company events is one of the ways to make that happen.
>>105775902would get you a commie block apartment in bumfuck nowhere in eastern yuro tops. We are paid in buttons but prices are high
>>105775829is this the live bait already? If not
>document shady things, leave a paper trail like filing a whistleblower report and involve law enforcement>leave bad reviews for every mgr internally>shit on the corpo on glassdoor>if RTO just stop showering and go in your dirty clothes, smell aweful in general. Make sure to book the smallest rooms for team mtgs and liberally tap others on the shoulder for help>you MUST smear shit and piss on the toilets and bathrooms>bring in some lice/bed bug>if bold, get some funky chemicals in the water cooler / fridge
>>105775886as always, humiliation ritual. MBA 101, the more humiliated and ridiculed the employee, the less it fights back
>>105775829>>105776338>make sure you max out all budgets, learning, travel, home work equipment etc
>>105776338This is unironically my office fit.
>>105776354Didn't think about that. Also management is a mess so I'm pretty sure if I start taking course that have absolutely no relevance for my position no one is going to notice.
>>105776280yes obviously, that was my assumption for these figures.
>>105773823her forehead looks fine to me, it's other parts of her that are fucked up
That's it. I'm going to become a writer, will quit my current job when my first book is published.
>you can't do that
Same thing people said about landing a job as a programmer. Make sure to save a spot in the line to tongue my balls in a couple of years.
>>105776338>if bold, get some funky chemicals in the water cooler / fridgeGreat idea if you want to be arrested, Felony would be my guess.
Any Microsofties here? /utwg/ is waiting for you.
>even got rejected from a software engineer position at walmart
I dont even want to check the jeet status on linkedin of that place

What's up with some of these employees? Are they really that enamored with the company, or are they just being two faced because they're paid to be this way?
>>105777981Indian central. All the whites and asians are being let go.
>>105777981We are improving efficiency saar
>I have to do this shit for 30 more fucking years
Y-you're joking, right?
my coworker just spent 2 weeks "optimizing" something, ended up making it 20x more complicated, made it run 3x slower, only wrote platform-dependent code for a single platform, and merged it into the master branch unprompted
why why why why why are jeets so stupid, why can these idiots not even troubleshoot a full drive?? Why do I receive constant escalations for things like full inboxes???
>>105777652better than white, not as easy as poo
>>105778312At least you're paid well enough that you can live comfortably and possibly retire early.
>>105777981"again?"
It will keep happening for at least a year or two. Big tech companies will be back to their early 90's headcounts
>>105778350saar please do the needful and sfc /scannow
>>1057783800 savings because you have to use every last penny to survive the yearly layoffs
>>105778330lmao
A coworker has also spent 2 weeks setting up our entire analytics system from scratch because the previous one didn't work.
The fault was simply a version mismatch between the frontend and backend library, most likely because someone updated one of them. I told him this a couple of times and he kept saying that wasn't possible so I gave up.
This has already happened twice before for this same reason, so I was 100% sure that was the issue. I didn't mention him this. I'm tired of him systematically contradicting me on stuff he knows nothing about, so have fun I guess.
>>105778423nta but yeah 6 months unemployed, all my savings are gone.
>>105778394I literally saw one do this + flushdns, and I quote "to fix clean the windows caches," trying to troubleshoot a full SSD the other day.
Lmao Blizzard layoffs coming in hard. Tech jobs are getting relentlessly ass fucked for 2 straight years now.
>>105773972Why the fuck would you want to suffer like this? You'll be working 50 hours a week for $80-90k as an US dev which is worse than even in Germany.

>>105778815sleep tight sister
>>105778756roughly 45 minutes ish till I find out if I still have a job
>>105778796Not only that but no amount of money can buy quick access to nature, cross-country transport that isn't cancer, infrastructures that are actually maintained, and the peace of mind that if you lose your job you can coast for months without losing a dime from your bank account. There are other advantages that aren't really possible to describe in text but quality of life differences are worth, to me, 150k/year salary differences (based in large part on real monetary impact based on my life experience so far) and I'd have to live in the bay area to make that kind of cash in the us, which lowers qol dramatically and implies the same tax rate as in europe.

our system works on a single terabyte of files (not even at once) and somehow thats enough to push our processing time to days and costs to millions

>>105779632>that time I decided to go to their meetup at a bar>just a bunch of middle aged and old men and womenFelt like a waste. At least I got to drink free beer.
>>105779632Team building events exist fo filter out unsociable autists. You'd best change your mindset from them being a bother to them being an easy opportunity to level up your social skills.
>>105779630"What you do sometimes is what you do everytime"
If you don't have a culture of efficiency, optimization, good design, it spirals out of control quickly and there's no way to scale it back in. Seems in the 2010's we forgot this is a quality-first industry, not quantity. The point is to replace bodies, not create more bodies.
>>105779648Do you happen to work in HR, be a woman or a fag?
>>105779648nta but they exist mostly cause of the normies needing to socuiize and befriend their coworkers cause they dont have anything else going on at home.
>>105779666No, I just learned how humans work and how to get by in life without being bothered too much. Don't die fighting on every hill, retard.
>>105779667They exist in order to keep turnover rates low.
>>105779687Kek, this clueless dudey. "Team building" and social events exist so that HR can actively gather data on people and figure out who to lay off.
>>105779701You know who HR stacies will lay off first? The unsociable retard who never attends team building events, never opens his camera in meetings and insists that good work alone should be enough reason to give him a raise or a promotion.
Obviously don't talk about your loli hard drive tho.
>>105779638its hard to point out the exact problem without revealing too much, but the basics is that its literally just taking in a reasonable throughput (like a dozen GB at best?) of raw barebones files and running that through validators, shit adding more data and eventually linking it to a small subset of entities in the system
the dimensions are basically like, a million users sending in kbs at best of data and a couple sending 100s of GBs
i think what happens is that we just have so much microservice shit all over that 99% of the time is spent orchestrating what could just be functions
>>105779648>You'd best change your mindset from them being a bother to them being an easy opportunity to level up your social skills.I don't need to change my mindset and I don't need to improve my social skills. If I don't feel like doing something under the scorching heat of July I won't.
I've already outlived lots of those "team players" and really social guy because people didn't like working with them because they were incompetent, lazy and sometimes snapped and took it on people.
>>105779701>>105779729If your companies work like that I feel sorry for you. Literally every single person I've seen here getting fired in 6 years was simply not doing their job right.
>>105779749>>105779729Wish I could be bluepilled like this again. I did all of those events and smiled with everyone and still got replaced with Indians. The most autistic and socially retarded people of all. So what was it worth? No, they don't care about your polite conversation anon. Nothing that your company spends time and money on is for you. It's data gathering
>>105779749>If I don't feel like doing something under the scorching heat of July I won't.Ew, you gave Stacy from HR the ick. You'll be put on a PIP asap.
>I've already outlived lots of those "team players" and really social guy because people didn't like working with them because they were incompetent, lazy and sometimes snapped and took it on people.Social interactions are part of the whole employment thingy.
>Literally every single person I've seen here getting fired in 6 years was simply not doing their job right.Except managers are already targetting you for being an unsociable autist.
>>105779764Acting like a normie is not a guarantee for keeping your job, nor is being actually good at your job. Both are just a basic requirement in economically difficult times to even stand a chance of staying employed for longer than a few months at best.
>>105779729I think this literally happened to me.
>>105779627You have never had a 40h hybrid in these states. Also this isn't 1985, the major cities and anything eithin driving distance costs an arm.and a leg even there now. At 100k you'd be much better off making less than average wages in germshitty.
>>105779824I live in Europe so of course my only knowledge about the US comes from the internet. The Pacific Northwest sounds like a great /out/doors paradise to live in and isn't too expensive.
>>105774329When I got laid off I had about 50k in savings because I'm a boring bitch who reads and fucks his wife in farmers fields at night for recreation. (I dont share). The wife earns a decent wage as an office manager so she kept us afloat but the savings would have stretched if we cut back to the bone. The apprenticeship wages are straight garbage but if you have savings to cushion the blow you can make it. Pulling overtime worked too but you can only bank as many hours as your boss is good for.
>>105774355General is better. Emergency callouts at night is where I make the big bucks. I just show up with battery floodlights and get treated like a hero if I can fix the problem which is 9/10. I've had stupid kids and women call me at 3am because they blew the breakers and didn't know how to reset them. 300 bucks for turning up and flipping a switch? Yes please. I only go easy on old women who are clearly broke, you can usually tell if the house is shitty. The rest pay the call out, plus time and materials. If it's actually a hard job that's 150-200 dollars an hour. If you call an electrician on saturday morning at 3am you're asking to get ass blasted, and I'm one of their fairer priced guys.
>>105774402I made about 95k gross last year. not bad considering I put in around 35-40 hours a week.
>>105774597I wouldn't know, never had a degree. I just got certified through the state via an apprenticeship. I was a NEET from 18-24. Had a girlfriend, but I was flat broke living with my parents. I only got a job because she wouldn't quit complaining that I was a bum. Ironically she left me because I was working too much. Women are insane.
>>105779775Well I work in a company with mostly boomers, it was bought by a bigger one but we still operate more or less indepently so
>Ew, you gave Stacy from HR the ickThere's no HR department in my company, literally. We only interact with HR when we want to hire someone.
>Social interactions are part of the whole employment thingy.Yes, and that employment thingy last a whole year. I don't attend this, I deliver the rest of the year.
>Except managers are already targetting you for being an unsociable autist.Absolutely right no this, yet I've seen countess time a productive and efficient sperg is preferred over a social yet useless employee.
Yet I'm fully aware that what I'm doing is far from ideal, I simply don't care right now.
>>105777072Me. Just been refreshing my inbox all day, I think I dodged it this time, but holy fuck every month we are having layoffs of thousands of people. What the fuck is the C-suite doing? Morale is in the toilet.
>>105779860I can't imagine being married in an environment like this. That would be like having two full time jobs.
>>105779904Satya is showing who he was all along. He didn't rock the boat for a while and let people do their thing but really his endgame was trying to send it all to India while coding Windows entirely in React Native. MS is fucked. Bad time to be a .NET/C# dev, I'm already looking at Swift.
>>105779860incredible larp
>>105779916Yeah I completely 180'd my view of Satya over the last few years. At first I thought he was actually refreshing and was genuinely trying to change the toxic Ballmer culture, but now I think he's even worse
>>105779782I've only ever seen nice guys laid off and fired. The disagreeable but competent assholes linger like roaches. That's why I am how I am now, if they want to lay you off your "sociality" won't move the needle at all, it will be how critical you are to the team. God grant you the serenity to know the difference
>>105779916>Bad time to be a .NET/C# devAll of us "freetards" told you this was going to happen.
>>105779947I mean, it isn't really a great time to be an anything dev right now. I just like the language and the ecosystem and I got sorted into this house out of college so it is what it is. There was a time in the mid 2010's where it felt great actually, Win 10 was good, VS and VS Code were solid, enterprise C# dev was comfy. .NET is somewhat independent of Microsoft but it's always bad for the daddy to go underwater.
Can't wait for shit to hit the fan next week. Either i'm let go or my workload doubles with a new manager.

>>105780466>beyond calculusNigga we only use arithmetic and stats
>>105780466Never. I just basically move strings from one place to another or translate them into other strings.
>>105780200I was about to call you a ball licking dumbass, but perhaps you're just ignorant.
Ok detective dickhead listen closely.
You never know what you're walking into when you're in someones basement at 3am in the pitch black and your caplight wont cover your peripheral vision if you're working directly in the breaker box. It's also shit if you're in crawlspaces. I always bring it on night call outs because its light, battery operated and there's no reason not to. I like not dying.
Don't believe me? Want to simulate how hard it is to work in the dark? Go into your basement at 3am and set a torch down, then try to thread a needle. You wont.
Now in a different scenario imagine turning up to some crusty basement with hardly any light coming in through the one ridiculously small window after obtaining your permits and arranging inspections. Then imagine trying to complete your safety prep work, disconnect and remove a failed breaker, install a new breaker, reconnect the circuits and test everything before restoring power. Takes me on average 6 hours and if I turn up at 2pm after lunch I'm working until 8pm-10pm on the night.
Could be you were just imagining large tripod floodlights because you're dumb and don't know they come in different sizes for different purposes. Here's a picture to help you imagine how a domestic tradie uses them.
Feeling educated? You're welcome kiddo.
Damn, there are so many attractive women at my job... I mean... they aren't runway models or anything, but they're pretty good for a tech company
>>105780889>detective dickhead>kiddoyou went too hard m8. this isnt reddut

>>105781032I can't comment on no shit where you eat stuff because I'm afraid of intimacy so I'm immune to all those situations, but there are other negative aspects of a female dominated environment.
There's a huge potential for drama and if your role involves interacting with these female coworkers, you have a huge risk of ending up in it or at least having to be a bitch wrangler and calming tensions.
If the leadership is predominantly female, it's very likely they'll do a shit job at it. In my current job this is the case and they're letting issues fester because they refuse to tell certain people to get their shit together or move them off the project.
>>105780889>anon doesn't know flashlights larger than a pen exist so he's doubling down on his larp because someone questioned setting up giant floodlights to flip a breakerlol
>>105780959>>105780998>>105781032>>105781125It's not THAT kind of a situation. The ratio of men to women is still like 7:1 or something ridiculous, and of the women like 80% of them are unattractive nerdy girls (mostly pajeetas) or middle aged women. But it's such a huge company that I still see a good number of attractive women when walking around campus or eating in the cafeteria.

Funny coincidence they hired the <0.001% of techies that are attractive females. Even funnier that she was unironically not competent.
>>105781168You should probably tell people when youโre not going to be at a meeting.
>>105781250there are no competent female tech people. Ive been in the world long enough to say that. and if she does exist, she didnt last for long cause women nature.

>>105781604>concedes you canโt do it on your own
>>105781606That's as orthogonal as if there were layoffs at GitHub or LinkedIn. We technically own them, but they're treated as different companies. When someone says they work at "Microsoft" they don't mean Xbox or Blizzard. They mean Microsoft, and the blast radius of this round is in MCAPS, which is a bloated glorified call center. We could probably lay off another few thousand and have no meaningful loss in revenue.

I work at a major credit agency I am sure every American ITT has heard of. If you have a credit score, we probably have your data on file.
Anyways, I learned today that we'll be moving most development offshore to Hyderabad. I'm just a low-level dev so I don't know any details but I know the jobs moving are actual software development and cloud-related stuff, not just call center work. They say that we'll be keeping both US and India teams, but it's obvious we're going to be replaced.
Americans aren't ready for what's coming. Our credit information is going to be in the hands of jeets by the end of the year.

>>105781876The exact opposite. Look it up. The irish-origin easp boomers oen and sell everything.
>>105781835Top-paying SWE jobs are competitive. Think about it this way. Imagine you want to be a personal trainer. My advice to you would include doing 30 minutes of cardio every day. You might grimace and say
>ew, cardio. wtf why? i'm not gonna be running marathons on the jobwhich is technically true. But a lot of people want to be personal trainers. It's a good-paying, relatively low-stress job once you've got it locked in. So what can you do to set yourself apart? Other than having good muscle definition, being as fit and as lean as possible is essential. But when you hear that, you return to your original issue, repeating
>ew, cardio. wtf why? i'm not gonna be running marathons on the joband so you'd never get what you want in this scenario. You're letting a small barrier to entry prevent you from the future you want because you're too fucking lazy to put forth 30 minutes of work every day for a few months. That's the biggest problem here, not Indians. You'll always be able to get hired if you're good at interviewing. You've just given up, and it's your own fault.
