Getting through the apprenticeship is pure unfettered ass, but once you're licensed you basically just print money. Sparkies are rare as rocking horse shit and being a white one you can literally see the look of relief on customers faces when you show up in your clean overalls and sharp haircut.

I even took on a utility room rewire for some old lady for free because it was an absolute fucking mess and the poor woman showed me bank statements showing that she was basically broke and wanted to work out a payment plan with me. 3 days work and she fed me like I was her favourite grandson and told me she'd recommend me to all of her friends and keep quiet about the free work. Already got an easy job lined up off the back thanks to her recommendation that'll make up for the shortfall.

Also being a subbie is amazing fun. You get to work with some awesome people. Ever went to a metal concert for a headliner band because the main contractor is the uncle of the lead guitarist? I have. I started when I was 36. I'm 41 now and I'd never go back to web development. Office Space was right.

A coworker has also spent 2 weeks setting up our entire analytics system from scratch because the previous one didn't work.
The fault was simply a version mismatch between the frontend and backend library, most likely because someone updated one of them. I told him this a couple of times and he kept saying that wasn't possible so I gave up.

Not only that but no amount of money can buy quick access to nature, cross-country transport that isn't cancer, infrastructures that are actually maintained, and the peace of mind that if you lose your job you can coast for months without losing a dime from your bank account. There are other advantages that aren't really possible to describe in text but quality of life differences are worth, to me, 150k/year salary differences (based in large part on real monetary impact based on my life experience so far) and I'd have to live in the bay area to make that kind of cash in the us, which lowers qol dramatically and implies the same tax rate as in europe.

When I got laid off I had about 50k in savings because I'm a boring bitch who reads and fucks his wife in farmers fields at night for recreation. (I dont share). You never know what you're walking into when you're in someones basement at 3am in the pitch black and your caplight wont cover your peripheral vision if you're working directly in the breaker box. It's also shit if you're in crawlspaces. I always bring it on night call outs because its light, battery operated and there's no reason not to. I like not dying.

Don't believe me? Want to simulate how hard it is to work in the dark? Go into your basement at 3am and set a torch down, then try to thread a needle. You wont.

Now in a different scenario imagine turning up to some crusty basement with hardly any light coming in through the one ridiculously small window after obtaining your permits and arranging inspections. Then imagine trying to complete your safety prep work, disconnect and remove a failed breaker, install a new breaker, reconnect the circuits and test everything before restoring power. Takes me on average 6 hours and if I turn up at 2pm after lunch I'm working until 8pm-10pm on the night.

There's a huge potential for drama and if your role involves interacting with these female coworkers, you have a huge risk of ending up in it or at least having to be a bitch wrangler and calming tensions.
