They can either do it illegally through their 5 eyes intelligence network which I'm sure Google cooperates with, or they could do it legally with a court ordered subpoena.
Once this new law comes into effect then they will have a third option which is to just crosscheck what Google accounts have been verified with which digital id. They will not have to present Google with a subpoena and they will not have to tap into their shady and nebulous intelligence network.
This is an obvious data security risk. Google may be in the business of pimping out your data, but because that is their business model they take data secuity very seriously. I don't really worry about a crazy ex who works at Google stalking me, or a politically motivated employee doxxing me because of the content I consume.
But the Aus government is fucking incompetent and, by its nature, filled with politically motivated people of all stripes. I'm sure that there will be systems in place to prevent abuse of this data, but I don't trust the Australian government to implement something that can not be circumvented by a motivated individual.
