There is zero chance I am formally linking my id to my Google account. I know that Google already knows everything about me, but formally linking my government id so that the Australian government can conclusively link me to my Google account is a step too far.
If Google locks or nerfs my account because I refuse to give ID or biometrics then I am fucked. I use my gmail for all my other accounts, and since I am a retard who often forgets his password I liable to get locked out of these accounts too.

Right now they can only do this in two ways.
They can either do it illegally through their 5 eyes intelligence network which I'm sure Google cooperates with, or they could do it legally with a court ordered subpoena.
Once this new law comes into effect then they will have a third option which is to just crosscheck what Google accounts have been verified with which digital id. They will not have to present Google with a subpoena and they will not have to tap into their shady and nebulous intelligence network.

This is an obvious data security risk. Google may be in the business of pimping out your data, but because that is their business model they take data secuity very seriously. I don't really worry about a crazy ex who works at Google stalking me, or a politically motivated employee doxxing me because of the content I consume.
But the Aus government is fucking incompetent and, by its nature, filled with politically motivated people of all stripes. I'm sure that there will be systems in place to prevent abuse of this data, but I don't trust the Australian government to implement something that can not be circumvented by a motivated individual.

Age verification should be at the actual website level and not the fucking search engine level. And that's mostly because they'll just keep piling on categories of information that children aren't allowed to find out about, which once they establish a taboo, can then be expanded to adults. That'd include basically any historical information that isnt the politically correct version of history, and any information about groups who are trying to oppose anything the government is doing, even when they do so legally.
