Sending any digital data over this port would no longer make it actually analog (thus, rendering all regular headphones obsolete). I would agree with this if I didn't own a galaxy s5 for years. That phone was genuinely waterproof, as in "chuck it in the pool and fish it out and it works". That phone, in 2015, had a removable battery, headphone jack, and was more shatterproof than anything I've used since.
People made fun of me for rocking an s5 in 2023 but I always offered to drive over both our phones and see whose could still make a call. For me personally there's a strong appeal in sub-$200 phones, I really don't need more

They're removing the audio jack so that you have to keep the data pins on your USB port or keep bluetooth enabled.
This enables easy access by feds that is only made easier by the reversible nature and undefined behavior of USB C.
