The difference between jpegli and webp isn't as dramatic and I think most people would agree that it's "good enough" and webp isn't worth adopting.
That way we can skip straight to jpeg xl or avif i stead of hoping around 12 different image formats.

The problem is websites don't want to spend a lot of money to give you free images/videos so it's better if they use better lossy compression so that when they do go for the lowest tolerable file size it won't look like complete diarrhea which is exactly what happens with JPGs right now.
Because libwebp v1.6.0-rc1 has lossless compression improvements.
The attached PNG can now be compressed to 28682 bytes losslessly (see https://qu.ax/HZVUp.webp for the proof), even JPEG XL could not do that last time I checked.
