RTX 5070: buy if it's reasonably priced & if you plan to work around potential VRAM bottlenecks.
RX 9070 non-XT: current 9070 prices in the US are too close to the 9070XT's.

The prices of decent 1440p/4k panels have collapsed in the last year, but are there any which support usb-c / thunderbolt whatever or is this still a "premium" feature? I'm getting sick of having a billion cables, especially when you can finally buy all-in-one usb4 cables for like $20 (yea they're thick and stiff but who cares when it replaces 4 cables at once)

My mom is retiring and going to need a PC (we live in the same house - OH CANADA). I'm leaning towards a HTPC so she can DNLA to her TV and maybe some light gaming like Subnautica and all the classics up till now. If she gets sick of it I want to convert it to a NAS for my old 3.5" drives that don't fit in my North XL, so I want power efficiency at idle and ideally not too big. Here are the options I'm thinking of:

1) just give her my old 6700K + 16GB ram + 1060 6GB in a Fractal Define R4 full of NF-A14's. I don't want her to be vulnerable banking without a TPM 2.0 CPU/IME backdoored legacy shit though. How is PC gaming on older hardware via Linux and is the hardware malware surface area still too big to risk ?

2) cannibalize the 1060 and Define R4, put in a ~$200 mobo, Ryzen 5 5600G + 32GB ram + Corsair RMX psu + cheap air cooler which would get her on windows 11 (though the 1060 won't be getting driver updates)

3) buy her a Pi for banking/browsing/Youtube, and install linux on the old 6700k PC for myself to use as a NAS (idle power efficiency probably sucks haven't checked yet)

I'm looking for and ultrawide 1440p oled screen
The 2 cheapest ones I've found are Dell AW3423DWF and MSI MAG 341CQP QA-OLED
MSI has higher refresh rate, supposedly better text clarity and better oled care features but saw some posts about flickering issues, while Dell has a lot of great reviews and comes with zero bad pixel and burn in warranty for 3 years

1. You don't want a 1440p ultrawide, the pixel density is too low for OLEDs (being non-RGB) that makes the color fringing awful. You'll be happier saving up for a 27" or 32" 4K model instead (109 vs 163/137 PPI respectively).
2. I really don't recommend either one because unless you are getting a REALLY good deal on one, those are both years old models and the cheapest UW OLEDs are now 240Hz like this GB model:
https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-mo34wqc2-34-wqhd-240-hz-oled-black/p/N82E16824012085

If you must choose between the Dell & MSI, then know those are really the same panel and both come with 3-year burn-in warranties so pick whichever is cheaper.

Not really, just get one with the best $/GB value. PCPP this 2TB model for $87 is probably your best bet:

Searching for recommendations for a motherboard
cpu will be a 9800x3d. important features would be pci 5.0, usb 4.0, minimum 2 m.2 slots and onboard spdif

what confuses me the most is the issue with the m.2 slots and the lane usage
how they block some pci slots when used, how they might slow down the pci 5 slots because they share lanes etc

im not planning on using additional pci devices but having a free one would still be nice to have
also wifi ain't that important since im using a cable connection on the pc

There's nothing confusing about it. The manufacturer will explicitly tell you what lanes are being shared and what happens to the bandwidth when you connect them simultaneously. The lane sharing is a direct result of usb4 eating up a total of x4 gen5 CPU lanes (x2 in use and x2 unused) leaving only x8 lanes (half CPU+half chipset) to be shared across 3-5x m.2. drives

I recommend you take a look at msi's x870e tomahawk (and edge ti - same board but white) which tries to reduce lane sharing by repurposing the x2 unused usb4 lanes to m.2. or all x4 CPU lanes if you're not using the usb4 slot.

Upgrading from 1080, it's been a good run and can still handle most new games.
Is the extra vram going to help purely for gaming in next 4-5 years? How much future proofing will it really provide.
Also when it releases I fear it will be scalped worse than the 50 launch as its"what they should of released"

>NH-U12S redux
Noctua's Redux line of fans & coolers are just price-cut variants of products that were designed over ten years ago.
Buy the Scythe Mugen 6 Dual Fan cooler if you're going to pay $55 for that Boomer cooler.
Scythe is owned by a JP engineer.

The Mugen 6 DFE can match some AIOs in noise-normalized cooling tests, and designed with DRAM clearance in mind.

I do plan in going 4k but not until next year.

I keep hearing the 9070 xt is better but Nvidia has more games that are using dlss4 vs fsr4. I know there's optiscaler to widen fsr4 support but I hear some games have graphical artifacts.

they're pretty much the same thing performance-wise. 5070ti has better dlss / fake frames but FSR4 is good enough unless you're pixel peeping but that's just about it when it comes to the differences
frankly, 9070XT still needs a lot of time in the oven due to how few games support FSR4, vs DLSS which works everywhere, so even without needing to replace your display I'd still lean 5070ti if they're at a similar price point

you can get am5 for decent prices right now and there's still two models coming down the line before am6. you'll survive on am4, but it's pretty old by now - the only saving grace is that the consoles are also old trash by now so no games that are being released are demanding hardware wise anyway

I would wait and do a full-system upgrade.

That processor isn't terrible--albeit starting to show its age, but assuming you're not encountering any issues with your RTX 3080--including however much VRAM it has, then I would wait and build a completely new computer, rather that upgrade piece by piece,

Also, depending on where you live, this may be a terrible time to upgrade, unless you can find a screaming deal on used parts.

I'd say the bus width isn't a limiting factor since Nvidia moved to GDDR7. Having your text resolution not downsampled because of limited VRAM is more important. I wish VRAM modules came in more capacity sizes for granularity of config options so GPU makers didn't have to make drastic ratcheting decisions because of incompatible ratios, for example the 5070 going from 12 (2x6 chips) all the way to 18 (3x6 chips) GB when if they had just been able to make the OG 5070 with 15-16GB (using IDK 2.5x6 chips or 4x4 chips).

Odds are you'd be using your card to encode (NVenc/AMF) so the R7 would do fine. If you also edit video for Youtube highlights and suchlike then the R9 could be beneficial. With that said, unless you're making actual money off the clips it doesn't really matter if your renders take 10 vs. 20 minutes.

Work at a thrift store.

Someone dumped a bunch of PC stuff

Scored a amd ryzen 5 2600 + mobo (no ram) and GTX 1660 super

And 3 mice (glorious model 0, some endgame brand mouse and razer dewther adder)

Question, which of those mice is the best

And is that CPU and mobo worth using over my current i7 8700 based build that I scavenged a few months ago (still on a GTX 970)

Or should I just put the 1660super in my current i7 8700 buildm

the fact that the cheapest 32" 240 qdoled to the asus pg32ucdm is a 400€ difference is quite a bit just to get a better osd, get a few other features
atleast they update their monitors and stuff unlike some other brands, guess you get what you pay for after all
sadly it will be worth it considering how annoying the pixel refresh is
it also seems more brands are not retarded than choosing to be retarded on purpose which was also suprising

>>105805044
the upside of the smart tv thing was you could access the service menu and allegedly increase brightness
downside is the matte coating, but you can also just do the peel and get a glossy display
downside is samsung has reported black screening/flicker on the dp port on the earlier models too, fixed ?
the age old saying every display is shit might be true after all

Hi guys, I wanna buy a gift for my buddy, and he already has this laptop.

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/gaming-laptops/alienware-m15-ryzen-edition-r5-gaming-laptop/spd/alienware-m15-r5-laptop

The Alienware M15 Ryzen Edition R5 Gaming Laptop.

I'm not quite sure what pic related means. He has 500GB of storage, so playing any games, he always has to play Tetris with his storage settings to somehow download something new. Is a 2TB M.2 compatible with his current 500GB M2 drive, or would I need to get him another 500GB (or 2x 1TB, 2TB, etc.)?

Thats a pretty ancient case now too, I don't think its PCIE riser will support anything modern also a bit big if you want to purely use it for media - I'd consider getting something more compact really.

Yes adding another drive should be fine unless for some odd reason he configured the laptop with the "2x 256GB" option. In which case both slots would be occupied and he'd have to remove one drive to make room for the upgrade. Still nbd really - just transfer the contents over with an adapter.

The one that feels best in your hand. They're all at least decent by way of specs so your subjective assessment is the decider.

>is that CPU and mobo worth using over my current i7 8700
>should I just put the 1660super in my current i7 8700 build
The 8700 is generally faster than the 2600. It'd take a Ryzen 5xxx chip to meaningfully beat it in games. Keep your eye out I suppose.

How do I know if I have to upgrade my CPU, or just get more memory?
I like to have tons of tabs open, but also play games at ultra settings 60fps,right now 1080p but would like to go to 2K soon.

What's done is done and all but you probably didn't need to upgrade the PSU. If it can handle a 3080 (TDP 320W, spikes 500W) it can handle a 5080 (TDP 360W, spikes 450W).

Then you need more memory (or less tabs lol). Again, if you're planning on building a new rig in 3 months or whatever just deal with it because you're likely on DDR4 so it won't be compatible with a new (DDR5) build.

5600/X, 5700X, and 5700X3D are all good options.
I don't think you'll need an -X3D chip for a 4070 GPU unless you play competitive shooters most of the time.
I would get the 5700X if you're worried about 6 core not aging well (I think they will be fine).
