Will Google ban my account and block my IP from accessing YouTube if I use yt-dlp to batch download hundreds of gigabytes of videos at 1gbps? I need to download a few thousand videos from many different channels to complete my collection of old cartoons but I don't want to risk getting blocked from YouTube, especially since my isp doesn't let me change my ip address for the life of my account.

Yes, I've had it happen to me. Supposedly the ban will go away if go a few weeks without trying access YouTube, but realistically you're going to need to change your IP. If you need to download a lot of videos from YouTube, use a VPN and limit how quickly ytdlp makes requests. I personally have have ytdlp delay 1 minute between requests.

It's literally impossible for me to change my IP so I guess I'm going to have to just use a VPN. I can't limit the rate either because some of the playlists I'm downloading from have hundreds of videos in them and it would take forever then.

i'm pretty sure you can download all you want as long as you pass cookies from a youtube account
what happens if you download a bunch of vids is you get the "sign in to confirm you are not a bot" error... so yeah you can sign in by giving yt-dlp the cookies and then you are done

>I can't limit the rate either
lmao if you dont rate limit thats an obvious sign of scrapping you shouldnt download faster than it takes to play the videos
Anonymous No.105804594
If I've learned anything it's that Google is completely arbitrary in its judgment.
I've mirrored tons of shit pretty rapidly yet friends of mine will get rate limited quickly. Why? Who knows. Google knows enough about me to deem me a safe human from this machine I guess, using whatever metrics they randomly came up with.

Can't you just drop your ISP for a few days and then sign up again? I don't know if you're in an area that forces contracts but this sounds like the way to go.

Probably yes, thats why you need an alt, in case you want to pass cookies to yt-dlp.

I did download ~600 music videos from youtube in batch, but only at ~60 Mbps and got rate limited after about 120 videos, waited a few minutes and resumed the download, this worked fine without a ban, but I think that if you download at 1 GBps you will definitely get banned.
I'd suggest to either limit your download speed, or wait between downloads a few minutes. Or you can try with a VPN

No it doesn't. I'm downloading public domain cartoons from the 1910s and 1920s that don't exist anywhere. Sometimes I find stuff on archive.org, but most of it is only on YouTube.

in my experience they don't ban your account outright, but they block you from downloading. you can still watch videos fine though. i basically had to swap between a VPN every 4-8 hours (downloads capped at 4MB) because it would block the IP. downloading in safari mode was the only thing that bypassed the age restrictions/sign-in nags on most videos.

Does this mean that the video wasn't downloaded correctly? There was also a bunch of "opening cloudfront.net link" before this. I haven't had a chance to watch the full video yet but it seems ok.

With jdownloader you can download 20 files simultaneously with 20 simultaneous connections per file, so you can definitely max out a 1gbps connection doing that.

My IP keeps getting banned from YouTube every other day due to me using freetube, I have a static IP, but I thankfully get unbanned an hour or two later most of the time.

i think they only ban frequent offenders that are harvesting data at high rates and don't interact with any other google services at all, those are just bot accounts

Youtube will first block yt-dlp downloads, prompting you to sign in
Then it will prohibit watching videos in your browser, prompting you to sign in
Then after about a month youtube will forget about it.

Hijacking OP's thread for a question of my own. What's the best way of scraping tags at the moment? It seems you can't properly scrape tags via the API anymore. I've tried, but it was pretty lackluster. Would the best option to just install something like VidIQ and then run a script that loads up the video's web page and saves the tags that VidIQ provides?

You can't, it's not possible with AT&T fiber. They tie your IP address to your account so even if you completely change your gateway router, it still assigns you the same IP and their customer service has no ability to change it either. The only way to get a new one is to pay them an extra $30 a month for a block of 5 static IPs.

I think what OP means is he's passing a cookies file or something along with the command, authenticating him to download age-restricted videos and reduced chance of getting blocked overall. you basically just add --cookies and the path to a NETSCAPE formatted cookies file. Had to do this myself back when youtube-dl was still a thing.

out of curiosity I went to check Youtube's robots.txt file to see if they Disallow web crawlers (obv assume they do, but wanted to verify it on my own).
