>few years ago, generative AI and LLMs are first entering the public zeitgeist.
>countless opportunities and excitement arises in terms of video games
>imagine NPC's you can fully interact with, not just using predefined conversation paths
>imagine photorealistic, movie like graphics being generated on the fly where you cannot tell virtual and real life footage apart
>Imagine in-depth stories generated uniquely to you by AI game master like entities.
>fast forward to now
>everyone thinks AI is slop
>usage of AI is seen as cheap and lazy
>""artists"" are going crazy because machines are suddenly becoming just as capable, if not better at creating original content
>usage of LLMs is seen as some cardinal sin in the realm of creativity.
>generative AI companies are slandered from training their content on other works and "stealing" from artists - despite the fact every story, drawing, song is in some way inspired by previous works.

Is it fear of progress? inability to cope with the fact that your skills, once seen as somewhat valuable are not actually that special and can be replicated so easily by machines?
While not an artist I am a software engineer. I am fully aware currently AI code is slop, like how an artist might regard ai generated imagery to be shit. But I also understand it's progressing at an accelerating rate. Will I be out of a job in a few years? Will AI generate better code than I ever could? Maybe. Am I going to blame humanity for this? No because I am not a retard.

LLMs hallucinate random shit and generate images with 8 fingers - but in a not so far future, they won't.

Imagine the possibilities they are withholding from you because they cannot cope with the fact they are not as special as they thought.

>LLMs hallucinate random shit and generate images with 8 fingers
This is already decidedly not a problem anymore.

To address the larger point: Yes, we're going through a phase of rejection, but there's no doubt AI is here to stay. It's clearly still in the early stages of people finding out what they can do with it, but it's a matter of time before we get the stuff you talked about (apart from the graphics thing because that's just weird, I don't think that's going to be the best use of it but regardless) because it's stuff the current models already have the fundamental capability to do so. Just a matter of leveraging it in the right way to put it into a game form.

I for one, have never wavered and I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait to get truly emergent narratives and fully fleshed out and unique game worlds and campaigns.

I'm convinced anyone who has only even briefly interacted with modern AI models and says shit like this are in hard cope mode. If you can't see the future it's not even a lack of vision, you are actively trying to deny it and I'm not even entirely sure why. I guess it's mostly just the current zeitgeist on the internet and people just mob onto the popular stance at the moment which is just to hate anything to do with AI? I don't see any other reason, especially coming from corners of the internet such as these which as historically been about weirdos forming artificial bonds with all kinds of non-human stuff...

You're right that I don't work directly with any sort of AI models in my line of work but do you have any sort of examples of AI-generated media that are particularly impressive? Generally my exposure to it is hallucinogenic video clips or uninteresting text adventures. It's not even really at the level of Hollywood slop.

I don't even think you need a specific example to see it. Take literally any of the random slop shit you have ever seen and that should already trigger the lights up top. Even the sloppiest AI shit already exceeds the rendering capabilities of 99.9% of humans, and they have gotten so much better already in just over a year. The days when AI shit came out looking all fucked up with 6 fingers and shit already seem like so far in the past and it was just like a year and a half ago or something. Even video now is getting extremely close to not being noticeably not real. And all this shit is being generated in minutes by literally one guy. How can anyone not see the writing on the wall of just how big of a force multiplier this shit is?

If people have reservations about the larger direction of society and whatnot I get it, and I also understand people being put off by the examples we've gotten so far for the most part because they've mostly been hack jobs trying to get a quick buck, but as a tool, AI is undeniably an extremely powerful tool that opens up a ton of new possibilities for, in this case, video game design.

Literally first result of image search under "AI generated image".
Speaking from purely a technical rendering perspective, what percentage of humans do you think could produce a picture of similar quality? And of the ones that could, how many could do it in 30 seconds. Forget 30 seconds, how many could do it in 2 days, even?
If you can't see how much time and effort AI can save developers and artists in generating concepts and working models if nothing else you are beyond arguing with.

>Steal the art of the .1% of humans
>"See its better rendering than 99.9% of people"
no shit.
The thing your pea brain can't seem to understand is, there is more to visual human communication than "rendering capabilities". That is why machine learning slop will never have soul, its fundamentally impossible for an algorithm to communicate from a human perspective.
And that plays out in every machine learning art image you see, the soulless-ness emanates from it.
I can see its uses from a corporate and capitalist perspective though, where they don't care about art or quality.

If someone generates a girl in a bikini and uses photoshop to make a few adjustments then that gets protection. And AI being used in an industry setting is almost always going to be getting some adjustment

The thing you AI faggots never mention is: payment. If devs actually are so retarded to put LLM NPCs into games, you are literally paying per interaction. No, you cant self host that shit, the average gamer potato can barely do 2k games. This is literally what is happening in the industry right now
Microsoft, Salesforce, Adobe, they are all moving away from Licenses. Instead you now get tokens/credits and pay per interaction. Since this is *very* lucrative, expect the same to happen to games. You will fucking look back fondly on game licenses.

Arcade is: you pay a quarter get one life.
Tokens are: You pay 100 bucks for 1.000 tokens. These tokens are used for all interactions, but you don't know how much each interaction is going to cost. You literally do your operation and if you did too much you end up in token debt. It is literally gacha gem obfuscation without even seeing the price tag.

You can not comprehend how dystopian this payment model is and big tech is pushing it so aggressively with that LLM nonsense.

I suppose if you try to push models to generate complicated hand positions you might get some fucked up shit, I honestly wouldn't know because I don't really ask for shit like that, but the general hands issue AI images had with hands is pretty much gone.

And I would still rather look at MS paint scribbles from drawthreads.
>And all this shit is being generated in minutes by literally one guy
If it takes a single guy minutes to generate something half "decent", how much do you think it takes mouth breathers to generate slop that is flooding the internet at this very moment? This quantity talk is most likely about the people who never gave a shit about things they are creating, they are just looking for a quick buck.
>but as a tool, AI is undeniably an extremely powerful tool that opens up a ton of new possibilities for, in this case, video game design
Those already good enough for the job never needed it to begin with. AI is for those who can't be asked to learn about the field they want to make money off of. Competent map creator learned what works and what doesn't from playing games and year of experience where he made some blunders and learned what works and what doesn't and MOST IMPORTANTLY, understands why it works or doesn't work.
So AI will be used for making asset flips without the bare minimum effort and time needed to make an asset flip and corporate boards to cut on "unimportant" parts of development.

1. you can digitize your work and put in proper formats for media after you complete it (there are still some artists (mostly old school or really high end guys) that do this.

2. Even for artists not directly tied to collaborative media that just work as freelancers for all kinds of stuff the overwhelming majority use digital either exclusively or for most work they do.

Unless you mean that it's because of "industry standards" in the sense that the market now expects a level of expediency that digital can provide so artists may feel pressure to adopt to keep up with expectations then maybe there's some truth to that, but there's nothing stopping anyone from using traditional if they really want to.

I wonder why that happened? Maybe it's because in those intervening years, all the flowery fantasies you just described have not come anywhere close to seeming possible.
>imagine NPC's you can fully interact with, not just using predefined conversation paths
LLMs definitionally cannot do this shit. They don't so much "forget" reality as they lack a concept of reality in the first place, there is no component of them that simulates a reality, that is not what they're built to do. There will be nothing resembling intelligence in this technology until someone goes completely back to the drawing board, which won't happen for a long while because too much money has been burned on this dead end.
It should be a quaint tool for autocompleting lines of code and looking up foreign language idioms, that is the maximum extent of its contribution to human worth.

"Bro just give it a few more years bro" is not an argument. People hate AI slop because THEY HAVE EYES. They can see it being used as a pathetic cost-cutting measure to drown the world in even more hideous advertisements, quite literally taking all the sense and taste out of design and authorship in favour of uncanny, schizophrenic fakeness.
They can see the dumbest mouthbreathers in their vicinity drive themselves to suicide talking to chatbots that just randomly riff on whatever was said last, convincing themselves there's a person in there then hitting new depths of mental illness when the illusion predictably implodes.
They can feel their eyes glaze over every time they start reading something online and spot the obvious tell that it was generated in 5 seconds with an algorithm instead of having any actual effort put into it.
They can watch the world being made worse and worse and worse by every messianic manchild involved in this bubble of an industry, and decide that this is not a positive trajectory.

LLMs and generative image models are both transformers, they function by taking a large amount of input data, breaking it down into tiny pieces, and then recompiling those pieces into output that statistically resembles the target input.
Thereโ€™s not something wrong when they hallucinate, theyโ€™re functioning exactly as designed.
And they are not getting better, from last month:
> Recently, though, that trend seems to have reversed. Media coverage and industry benchmarks both confirm that recent models, including the flagship models from OpenAI (GPT-o3) and Chinaโ€™s DeepSeek (DeepSeek-R1) are prone to much more hallucination than their predecessors

All your use of AI tells me is that you do not care about your product enough to invest time or money into it. If you've got an AI 'art' ad, you do not believe your product is strong enough to recoup the cost of having someone actually produce an ad for you. If you don't think it's a good product, and you don't want to invest in it, why should I?

Do you avoid using calculators because it ruins the craft of doing all math by hand? Do you think artists never trace or imitate the work of others because its "a white craft"? A real digital artist is already using AI in their workflow somewhere and you dont even notice it. A bad artist is producing the slop that is easily recognizable.

Nope. They're much better at it but even imagen and Veo make fucked up hands or disembodied parts every now and then. We've just gotten better with workflows that patch these issues.

Wow anon, that's fantastic! Maybe in this wonderful future of yours, we can all start talking positively about "AI", until then nobody cares. AI isn't just bad in its current state, it's actively being used to shittify everything and everybody is tired of seeing it.

Breh I hate AI slop but this is true. Most people are fucking retards that will watch "pokemon IRL" and "cutting glass fruit" slop on tik tok literally all day. I worry that AI will disincentivize artists that are truly talented and have complex feelings they want to communicate with their art, but let's get real. Most people don't care about good art and most artists are cranking out complete garbage. Things will continue to get ugly and cheap until there's nothing left to cheapen.

You're asking the question "who can make this" but you should be asking "why SHOULD anyone make this." If you can't look at that picture and understand why AI is bad you are a complete and utter pedestrian. I would call you a pleb but not even a roman pleb would think that looks "good."

the problem with Seb Mckinnon is that he refuses to change his artstyle even if you tell him to. you can distinguish something generated by Seb and Yoshitaka Amano very easily so it gets boring

Do you see it?

Well, a talented person will for sure provide more accurate and useful prompts such that it yields better outputs from the AI, but I wasn't even talking about that. I'm just saying a talented person will have the thing the untalented person lacks which is the most important ingredient to create worthwhile things which is vision and taste. It's one thing to be able to request any possible thing to be generated, it's another to know what would be a worthwhile thing to request, and yet another to accurately judge the output and what needs to be changed in order to bring it closer to the desired end point. And yet another to be able to take it there (whether by retreating it manually or a further iteration with the AI or other)

~But you don't need to know how to play guitar or even know what a guitar sounds like to know if what the person is playing is good music. You're confusing the technique with the artistry. You missing the forest for the trees. The best composer in the world is not the best player of any instrument, even the ones he writes for. Conversely the best piano player in the world is not the best musician. Playing the instrument and writing great music are completely different talents. I would argue the really precious resource there is the person who is talented at coming up with the best melodies, not the person who can play them flawlessly.

Sounds great. By all means, please attempt this. I've seen a handful of neat experiments/mods involving use of LLMs for dialogue.

But in general, that's not what we got. We got normal games with normal static assets, but those assets are now AI generated instead of being fully hand authored.
All the soullessness and slop of AI with none of the upsides.

AI in the state we currently know it has been a thing for barely 2 years and it's a constantly moving target. If you're tricked into playing a game "made with AI" and expect it to be good that's on you. We're lucky if we get the first fully functional proof-of-concept-type of game in the next 2 years. It's obviously gonna take time.

while op is fucking retarded and should absolutely kill himself without any hesitation, there is some truth to it he can't convey, because he has no capacity to even picture something like this.
imagine a progremmur who has some talent of drawing he never bothered to develop, it was some funny pics in school and that's it, he cant actually draw well, he will mess up proportions and perspective every single time. all he has is potential.
now he asks ai to build poses for him, sketches he can use as a reference
suddenly he is not absolutely terrible anymore

okay well, the pic is what gemini thinks a sketch is
