I often get the urge to buy a Model M, but this time that urge is justified considering the fact that I need my cheap-ass membrane is on its last legs--surprised it lasted this long, what with all the swinging it around by the cable and slamming my fist onto it like a gorilla 4 teh lolz.
I have the option of buying one for <$50, but I'd also need to consider the price associated with putting together a converter or buying one.
Unicomp's Mini M caught my eye since it's an affordable alternative to an SSK, but as I understand it, there are some issues with QC, and a few other miscellaneous issues related to the controller. Can anyone with a Mini M chime in with what their experience with their particular model has been like?
>>105823365i thought it was the model f repros that had qc issues. those have been largely resolved (ellipse has been doing this for almost 10 years now) but as for the unicomps, they got new tooling a year or two back and the quality is significantly improved. but they jumped their prices up significantly, only thing i can think of would be trump's tariffs assuming they're still active.
Guys, wtf is wrong with akko's switches?
I have a keyboard that uses jelly back switches and they're quite comfy but holy fuck is the worst switch I've ever used regarding maintenance.
I'm not filthy or anything but if I don't clean this keyboard literally at least once a day with some compressed air on it, the switches begin to fail. If any microscopic bit of dust or cat hair goes anywhere near the switches, they stop working.
Never had this problem before, ever, not even with shitty redragon keyboards.
Looking for a budget wireless keyboard and came across the Epomaker Aura F99 Pro after a few hours of searching. Shortly after though I came to the realization that mechanical keyboards sound really fucking annoying? Are they just a meme, why the fuck do people like the extremely loud clicks of them? If Iโm pressing these keys down for 6+ hours a day this would drive me insane
>>105820863I think you can get comparable keyboards for a much better price. Filco or Leopold were always a better value proposition.
I will not consider anything other than full and TKL. Every other configuration loves to mess up the useful navigation buttons. If I have page up and down I also want home and end, yet so many have a strange combination like End and Del instead. Nobody seems to want to make the keyboard just taller to fit all these buttons even though for desktop use this extra height doesn't matter at all nor obstruct anything.

I've had a GMMK 80% since 2019, default gateron browns + added some chinesium SA keycaps in 2021. Now that I'm grown up, maybe it's time to settle with a 100%, linear switches, no rgb/gaming bs. Any suggestions?
thoughts about mecha-membrane?
>>105828739>mecha-membraneWhat?
>>105828754It's a type of hybrid switch i think between membrane and mechanical
>>105828802From what I can see "Mecha-Membrane" is glorified tactile membrane. I owned a chinesium tactile membrane for some years and they do work, but they suck compared to actual mechanical boards. There is no real advantage to them and you are often better off with a pure membrane instead because pure membrane is water resistant while membrane-mechanical is not. Topre, a true hybrid membrane-mechanical design with better feel than membrane, are very sensitive to water damage and unlike pure mechanical keyboards with MX you can't just replace a switch but instead you will likely need to replace the whole board if you spill something. With Mecha-Membrane you lose the modular repairability of mechanical or the office cubicle sturdiness of membrane.

I've only been here for about a week, but once my keyboard arrives and is done that will be that. How unfortunate. Is this the nature of being a keyboard-enjoyer versus a keyboard-enthusiast?
I wish it was cost effective to get a blank slate and fit the switches myself but that's not happening. But if I could do that from scratch, is there even any reason to use all the same switches for every single key? I highly doubt having an expensive mech or analog switch for your caps lock is going to make a difference, might as well use something really heavy and clicky so you know you dun goofed and accidental presses are harder.
>>105833832>is there even any reason to use all the same switches for every single key?In theory no, but in practice it's generally better, with some limited exceptions. Mixing and matching switches usually sounds and feels wrong.
But it often feels and sounds better to use something different for the spacebar, because the spacebar necessarily sounds and feels so different from the other keys anyway. E.g., the spacebar is heavier than the other keys, so when the spring weight of the spacebar switch is identical to the other keys it will feel lighter than themโgiving it a heavier switch will feel MORE uniform. Likewise spacebars have such a different keycap shape that they make a very different sound. Changing the switch might help you bring the spacebar sound closer to the alphas, or it might just sound different in a way that is more pleasant. Since the spacebar never sounds exactly like the alphas it doesn't hurt the uniformity to do this.
On backspace/enter/shift/etc., I am less confident that you can reap gains by changing the switch. But in theory you should be able to.
>>105833890I said all that because my current spacebar has that dry metal chiiing from the spring returning that I enjoy / I'm going to miss it.
Put a little tape inside my spacebar and now I feel like a real ghetto aliexpress budget keeb guy
>>105833832>I wish it was cost effective to get a blank slate and fit the switches myself but that's not happening.I have literally never in my life seen anyone on 4chan admit that they can't afford something.
"I'd love X, but I can't afford it." Never.
But I do see a lot of "Of course I could buy X, if I were retarded and loved wasting money on things that don't matter." All the time.
What's going on?
>>105835435"I can't afford it" is almost never literally a true statement with consumer electronics for anyone who has access to a computer to post on 4chan with
We're not talking about cars or houses or yachts here
>>105835939>is almost never literally a true statement with consumer electronicsOn the contrary, it is frequently true. By some kind of semantic drift many on 4chan now seem to believe that it's correct to say you "can afford" anything that you technically could purchase with available funds. That is not what it means to say that you can afford something.
If a $400 purchase for a relatively frivolous item like a keyboard would financially hurt you and force you to 'budget' elsewhere, making this an ill-advised decision for your household, then you cannot afford the expense, as you do not have enough money to be devoting a substantial portion of it to aesthetic things and fanciful pleasing trinkets and so on. To say that you technically could have skimped on the necessities of life to make a financially damaging purchase is just cope.
What these people want to say, and it's frequently true, is that the other anons they see indulging in these purchases cannot all be wealthy individuals, and almost certainly some of them cannot afford to be indulging themselves the way they are doing. "I can't afford it, and neither can you, idiot." Maybe they are afraid to be wrong about some particular case, to hear "actually I make $325,000/yr and this is not a serious expense", to which they would have nothing to say. That kind of acknowledgment, that some are entitled to enjoy luxuries that are denied to me, is very painful.

>>105857014Once I have my workshop sorted I am planning on doing something similar with CNC engraved cases. Norbauer is a california guy and knows his market with the angel investment tech sector, that's why he talks about it a lot on his website and why he has advertised heavily on news sites adjacent with those demographics in silicone valley. If you look at his bio page he has a reccomended book reading list and one or two is about buisness and marketing. All he needs to do is make a handfull of cases or boards and make his money back 10 fold on the upcharge from a few sales.
>>105857905yeah that'll do it. guy knows his shit.
Throwing out spitball ideas that may or may not already exist:
1. Umbrella keycaps. Stem for socket and top face but no skirt, akin to typewriter keys. Theoretically the nearly unobstructed RGB passthrough can be used for more artistic lighting if a board is specifically made just for it?
2. Chime switches. Tactile or not, has a small resonant piece of metal that continues to vibrate and produce a high pitched sound after a press, hence "chime". Maybe the vibration can even be used to give the finger a little buzzing feel but maybe its going to be way too small for that.
>>105858154>Umbrella keycapsThey exist. You can get and 3d print type writer style key switches for Model Ms that are without a skirt iirc. For MX there is Lamรฉ and FunkMonk which are both 3d printable low profile caps with little to no skirt
>Chime switchesNot a thing (yet) and the size required for feelable resonance wouldn't make them practical. However, there are buzzer/haptic systems you can add with QMK firmware compatible keyboards that can make the board vibrate in response to keys registering. Same sort of system as piston actuators like with beamsprings
>>105857014>give it an air of sophistication and classIt's so transparently striving for this kind of vulgar "featured in GQ" prestige, though, that I can't imagine buying into his vision. I like the idea of "the $3600 keyboard guy" but I look at this pretender mediocrity and I am disappointed.
>>105859610I'm no /gd/ fag, but when it comes to product or aesthetic design a lot of it is based off "vibes" when it comes to value or how supposedly good something is. Most styles happen organically and are referred to as a particular style posthumously, but modern design styles have become known for originating from specific studios with multiple artists contributing to a shared aesthetic which then becomes branded. That is why Bauhaus and MCM became so big and lorded over, the studios behind them were big, had many artists working under them and had the connections to show and advertise their product designs (very much like the guild art workshops of old).
A lot of people don't realize that, soas result you get people like this guy who does not actually understand why specific designs or aesthetics are so expensive, yet try to emulate it
He is trying to make his product show some kind of wide stretching design philosophy or fundamental theme when there is none. He may not understand that, or he may think it does, but all he is actually doing is copying the sterotypical marketing of modern design without any of the substance behind it or understanding why. To sound like a sterotypical art critic: it's derivative and shallow. His language is another red flag because of how comically verbose it all is. It is absurd. You can simplify 80 percent of his product descriptions and have them retain the exact same statement. But again he is trying to be designer brain so of course all descriptions about designs have to be over complicated. It's really fucking weird to look at as it is almost the perfect example of someone grifting with modern art...yet I can't tell whether he is actually serious or not.
But I suppose if he is making money that's on the dumb dumbs buying his stuff to begin with which I can't really fault. But still, he could tone it down a bit the level of pretentious over fucking keyboards.

>>105862711>romaniaI got you bro
Remains to be seen how they do with producing a proper dark black, especially since it's PBT, but the new thing Keyreative has for double-shot where they dye-sub the first shot legends before doing the second shot seems like it could be really cool, and they're significantly undercutting even Keykobo on price. I'm tempted to go in on this GB but I've bought too much shit recently and a few rumours that "Keyreative is actually good now" isn't quite enough for me. Their other double-shot KAP caps do look OK from what little I've seen.
I did buy the PBS MV Classic caps that they did, which were just dye-sub PBT, and they were very good. So I'm cautiously optimistic.

It seems like something you won't care about until you see it.
>>105857014>maybe even a killingVery much doubt he's making "a killing". If anything I'd suspect he's doing this for clout and the exorbitant prices are meant to cover his enormous development and production costs, and to get his name in newspapers. This guy shells out five figures to an engineering firm to get them to design the world's most elaborate stabilizers which take "one hour per stabilizer to assemble" and have to be machined to ridiculous tight tolerances to function correctly. You don't do that to make money.
I think he really did just stack up a series of huge costs and that the price tag to some extent reflects that. If I were to guess I'd say he's already got some money from a previous career (or some other source) and is just like any other hobbyist trying to spend their way into the big leagues, except he spends even bigger.

had a question, what's up with all the boards trending towards lower %? Do people really prefer paying the same or more for fewer buttons? is there a higher level reason for it?
I find my numpad and extra keys to be totally irreplaceable and I can't really wrap my head around why anyone wouldn't want those on a board, help me understand your thinking.
also, is there any slim platform or something I can stick my low profile keyboard on because my wrist rest is too high for a low profile and getting a slimmer rest is probably going to be more uncomfortable.

>>105870009>had a question, what's up with all the boards trending towards lower %?An enormous number of computer users are troglodytes who will say things like "I don't use page up/down". Small boards take up less desk space, appeal to gamers who like more room for their mouse, are more portable for bringing to work/etc., and most importantly, they cost less money to produce. There are other reasons people like them, but I think those are the main reason you see so much 65%/75%.
I will say, however, a few words in defense of the sometimes-maligned 96%, also known as the incorrect 1800 layout. This is almost as compact as a TKL without losing a single key, because it makes use of the much-neglected Windows num lock functionality to have the numpad double as the nav cluster. This is an elegant solution, too often overlooked. For the rare cases where an application doesn't accept numpad nav inputs you can use function + numpad key to refer to the normal nav key, or if you use such a troublesome app regularly you could make function+ numlock a layer toggle.
True full-size is still a great layout though. Real Excel job havers get to have numpad for numbers and all the nav at the same time. And the sound of even the most scuffed full-size pwns the sound of most fancy little 65% boards.
>>105870009I have the Keychron C3 Pro and 1000% going mad not having a numpad. For some reason all the full sized ones are massively overpriced in europoor land.
>>105872487From what I hear, you WILL have to compile your own edit of the keyboard's QMK files to add a line about debounce timing, because they're a bit too tactile for the default settings.

>>105872649the lastest (keychron) firmware has a debounce method+slider in their web thing
>>105870009The problem I have with custom keyboards is that that they seldom go beyond 100. I don't want less or the same amount of keys, I want more keys. I want a dedicated work station. I want keys for non-standard characters without having to jump through the hoops of going through modifier layers or alt modes, just give me ability to have a spare key assignable for ยฝ or โ / โก / โธธ.
>what about hyper 7?It's the only one on the market and does not suit my purposes. I need more keys and I do not like the amount of keys which are not 1u on there.
>>105873018>I want more keysme too. I feel like macro pads or similar are the only solution here. Having some kind of mongrel ortho pad specifically just for esoteric keys sounds like a valid use case, you could even get fancy caps if you want to make it pretty.

Alternatively I hear most tri mode keyboards can connect to two PC's at once via different input methods and switch between them via switch or keybind, is that true? Or would I need to look at specific models? Do any tri-mode keyboards have removable batteries or take normal AA batteries if I'm worried about lithium battery swelling?

>>105875446>it's really just the middle class trying to signal how "wealthy" they areThe "middle class" would not buy a 3000+ keyboard. Just to ignore the absurdity of that for a moment, the middle class would stoop to lower price goods at a higher connation of status than what you put in. It is often with the working or upper class where you see people spend at a loss in value for status symbols because for the working class they are willing to hurt themselves to claw out of their class bracket while the upper class have nothing to lose. The middle class however are in a more tenious position where they can fall back into the working class and it is hard for them to advance into the upprt class without spartan level resource management. Middle class people are the same sort of tech nerds who would buy Topres, Model Fs or Beamsprings for half a grand due to the status they provide as well as the idea of them not ever needing to be replaced or bested in typing quality. In other words they would go straight to "endgame".
>>105873018that's why when i learnt that the model f122 repro was a thing i decided to buy it. the guy that makes them may have questionable business ethics but he does deliver on the keyboards. and well...he's the only one making them :\

Obviously there are a lot of very different kinds of "middle class" people.
>>105875624>keyboards are definitely more of a techbro thingNormies do actually enjoy getting keyboards as gifts and such, because they do use a keyboard; it would just never occur to them to "get into" this as "a hobby"
But that's partly because being a normie almost by definition precludes "having hobbies"
Do white keys with black symbols have more natural visibility in dark lighting than black keys? This is specifically for see-through caps. The keyboard I just got has somewhat disappointing clarity on the symbols, some like the backspace key are barely lit by the (north) LEDs. The backlight ends up much brighter than the symbols if I set it bright enough to actually light up the letters. It is really difficult to see them with the LEDs off and lights on.
So now I'm considering getting replacements, maybe even replacing only some of the keys so that it has a two-tone color scheme (precludes having fancy artistic caps though). Or should I just go for an all-white (or clear?) keycap set against the black body? If the transparent part of the plastic for the symbols tend to be of a darker shade then in theory light caps against dark symbols should be naturally more readable always...
>>105881304>BLN gets his backlit shinethrough keyboard and STILL can't see his key legendsI hate BLNs
>>105881304>If the transparent part of the plastic for the symbols tend to be of a darker shadeInteresting point. I might have an idea. If dark legends contrast best with the keycaps, what about a solid black legend with no light at all? That would be extra dark. And to increase the apparent brightness of the white keycaps, what if there was no bright backlight competing with it visually?

Alright nerds.
I have a Maltron dual hand and a Maltron left hand keyboard in my collection. I have an oppertunity right now to grab a Maltron right hand and have a full set bar their rare head/mouth keyboard which is around ยฃ400/$500 brand new. I have decided that if I do get the right hand I want to be able to use all three as a daily driver with the dual hand in the centre and the single hands on either side of it. Only issue is of course is that there would be a lot of redundant keys and I would be using the dual hand far more than the singles due to the traditional QWERTY layout. So I want to know if there is any hardware key remappers out there that I could use for the single hand keyboards to make them non-redundant while not permanently altering them? Kind of like a box that a usb from a keyboard can plug into which then translates key presses into a different set of inputs before reaching the computer USB port. That way I could just change out the keycaps to whatever remap I want and if I need to downsize I can just put the originals back on and not need to worry about remapping to standard spec as it was done entirely by an adapter.

>>105889549Yes.
It's called the placebo effect.
I work a Software Engineer and had my Realforce R2 55g for nearly 7 years now as my daily driver at work. Keyboard is absolute joy to type on and looks the same since the day I got it.
I play video games as one of my hobbies and use a gaming keyboard (currently wooting 60he with gateron jades).
I always wanted to use my Realforce to game on, but the 55g topre felt too heavy for the games I play (Starcraft 2).
Recently I discovered there is actually a 30g variant so I ordered it instantly (I have never seen it in stock before). I can't wait to get it.

>>105891197the main clutch for me is being lightweight and lower need for care and maintinence. i know you like swapping components but i like how my keyboard doesnt weigh 500 grams and how i dont need to swap my actuators every time anything happens
maybe somebody will find an alternative for that metal bracket on the space bar and return key
thats my only real issue with membrane and its something which could have been improved a long time ago
>>105891431Not good enough. You should have gone for the Model M and accept membrane is not the exclusive answer to your needs. Hybrid mechanical is the way (except topre thats gay)
>i like how my keyboard doesnt weigh 500 gramsLift more
>>105891399firmware anon not hardware, i mean the instructionsets in the devices board
you could make the keys do whatever you like with a bit of hackering
>>105891453>>105891453model m is outdated, i can get a microsoft from 2000 with special rubber buttons which play my music and open my browser
i imagine you could go inside those keyboards program them to anything without running extra proprietary software
>>105891469>model m is outdated, i can get a microsoft from 2000 with special rubber buttons which play my music and open my browser>whats a macro?
>>105891479>>105891479i dont want to run my system speeds down with 3rd party softwares for macros when i can easily change the information in my device derivers even change the macros inside of the keyboard itself
>>105891500get moar outside the box i have enough ram i dont have enough thinkers on my team
>>105891514get more inside of your keyboards and outside of your comfort zone sheep
its not enough to use membrane you have to use your brains and you have to use your hands to type
you can have most power to write code to file inside of the keyboard hardware more even than the people in the factory who need to write specific company approved code to file inside of the keyboard hardware
>>105891533get moar money and an actual keyboard by Cherry
>>105891514at this point its clear that you only use membrane to feel subversive and cool and not for the actual benefits. you are being outdone by mechanical users who have gone so far as to produce musical instruments and alternative types of controllers with their mechanical keyboards. there is no reason your membrane keyboard could not do this.
>>105891553I dont know who is membrane or who is mechanical anymore
>>105891589>>105891589>>105891589New thread, this one is dead and waiting for the limit anyway
>>105891579>>105891579its hard in these days
it seems like the whole world has crossed over
sometimes its only clear to see when its too late and it expects, it demands, that you go with it.
>>105891431>i see no response to my post anonI'm at work right now.
