Who was the catalyst for the death of skeuomorphism in UI design?
Microsoft seems to be the original sinner from what I can tell. Windows 8 was infamously flat in 2012. Mac followed suit with OS X 10.10 in 2014. On the Linux side, it was't until 2019 that GNOME joined in with 3.32.

It was because Windows RT (remember that? me either) couldn't handle the transparency effects.

>Performance Considerations for ARM Processors: Windows RT ran on devices with ARM processors, which had different architectural features compared to the x86 architecture used in standard Windows computers. Aero Glass, with its emphasis on animation and transparency effects, relied heavily on graphics hardware acceleration. The decision to remove Aero Glass from Windows RT may have been related to optimizing performance on these devices.

Transparency is a gimmick and not even remotely related to skeuomorphism. Removing transparency does not imply making the entire UI look like utter shit. Like, aero even has a non-transparent mode which I prefer, because transparency is dumb.

>skeuomorphism
if you asked that question during the vista area, people would think that you are talking about some kind of disease. It's was simply called aero design. Zoomers and their funny pseudo intelligent sounding terms. Also, there's no need to bring something back that has been experienced (albeit unfavorably) by a generation before you. It is not what your generation calls "underrated", you are simply late and products these days are slop.

Skeumorphism is not the Zoomer term.
Zoomers call it "frutiger aero" or just "frutiger".

Skeuomorphism isn't the same as Aero and you're incorrect, it was a term used at the time (usually to criticise Apple). You're thinking of Frutiger Aero which is a made up zoomer term to idealise 2010's GUI trends. It's funny that zoomers are nostalgic for skeuomorphism though when it was mocked at the time.

Transparency gimmicks and flat are not opposites. Transparency is shit, and so it flat. Its possible to have a UI that is not either.

It was literally because Microsoft's low spec Surface tablets at the time could not run it. The developer involved was told to disable it globally to not make them look bad. Everyone else followed because this was the time they were drunk on the idea that tablets would replace desktop PCs and laptops (never happened) so they forced this UI style on everything and we have been living in cope land ever since.

Apple products now have the juice so they are trying to bring back less boring UIs with liquid glass.

The opposite of transparent does not mean flat shit. Flat shit is an explicit design choice that has nothing to do with hardware limitations. Transparency has always been a stupid gimmick, its not required. We can have good lucking UI without such nonsense. Both Android and IOS had decent looking UI before it was made increasingly hideous. skeuomorphism had existed on PC before the transparency nonsense.

It's because every company was obsessed with "standardizing" their design and it's easier to do that with flat design, it being basic abstract shapes. Now skeuomorphic design is coming back a bit because companies want to stand out.

Nta but he's not completely off base. Basically the buzzword at the time was "interface convergence" and flat shit was the path of least resistance in managing ui elements to scale and be ported to different screen sizes and devices with minimal effort.

Because it was ultimately a buzzword, you definitely can have a single solution for everything but will be a mediocre one so you need to make later something dedicated ending in a xkcd "15 standards competing" situation. In short microsoft doesn't even have a clue of what the fuck it's doing, that's the reason.

Webshit. So few programs are actually native now, and webshit has almost always been ugly flat shit so OS/GUI makers decided to follow along so everything doesn't look quite so disjointed and out of place.

Believe it or not, Microsoft was the trendsetter for these UI trends

>Mac OS 8-9 was inspired by Windows 9x style
>Aqua was copied from early Windows XP Betas UI
>Vista was trendsetter for skeuomorphism, Apple copied it on iOS and Leopard
>Flatshit started with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7, Apple and Google copied it with Android 3 and iOS 7
>Apple Liquid Glass was copied from Windows 11 Glassy depth look
