Software development. At any given time for my job I need half a dozen to a dozen containers running, plus 1 to 4 IDEs, next to browser tabs, Slack etc.

My MBP M1 is the 8/256 model and can't handle that stuff. So I've been using my 7yr old ThinkPad until now. Despite that I really dig the M1, except the filthy ISO keyboard layout.

I haven't got it yet. It will arrive in 2 weeks they say. I did a custom config (ANSI keyboard in EU), which they'll likely need to either BTO, or ship from abroad and repackage with a different charger.

The M4 Pro 14c/20c with 24gb/1tb specs I ordered will be a beast compared to my M1, and especially compared to my Linux ThinkPad.

I contemplated to wait for the M5, reportedly coming out in a few months. But I figured that if I wait for an M5, I might as well wait for the M6.

In the end I figured I don't really want to wait, and I want + need an upgrade right now. I can always resell the machine later (once the M6 or M7 hits the market) for good resale value and upgrade then. But I'll probably don't need it to be honest.

Probably will. The M1 is also already fast - provided you don't overstress the RAM like I tend to do :^).

Base M4 is already close to 2x the performance of a base M1. M4 Pro around 2.5x.

I hope we will get a magic keyboard with backlight in the near future.

Backlight + adjustable angle feet on the bottom are the only two things missing from an otherwise amazing keyboard in {current_year}.

An A18 Macbook would be a mistake IMO unless Apple plans to raise the price of the MBA. Very possible if they add an OLED panel with the M6, after all is said and done the MBA might start at $1200. Either way they will have to raise prices in the US because of tariffs.

What do you guys use for cloud storage? I've been contemplating self-hosting nextcloud, but it also seems like a hassle (and expensive). Right now I'm on a combination of icloud and onedrive. But both feel kinda icky. Especially icloud has a lot of synching problems?

I do all of my drawing on a 2019 iPad Pro with procreate. It's the greatest drawing experience of all time. I never touch my Wacom on my PC rig.

I'm almost ready to upgrade... but the fucking new iPad Pro is over $2,000 with all the bells and whistles... which I might be able to stomach if at least I could use it as a laptop + tablet... but Apple in their infinite greed have relegated the iPad to being a shittier version of a smartphone and a shittier version of a laptop that cannot run apps from either.

You can't get shit done on an iPad unless you use google docs like a cretin. I wish they would just let me use this beast of a machine and merge it with iOS already. The new iPad Pro is strong enough to run anything a laptop runs, yet they refuse to allow it to function.

Apple is so tiring, they are fading so hard and nothing on the horizon looks interesting. The only cool thing they've done in 10 years was come up with the M chips and AirPods.

Well, some files and folders don't show up in my finder. But they are visible on my phone and online. I don't think I can force a synchronisation with icloud, like with onedrive/google drive. If I edit and upload new files, it all goes well. So it's a bit strange.

if files do appear online (in web version) - then it is not phone sync issue, but something on mac (unless files are still open/in use on the phone or on the web version). you can try killing the processes:
sudo killall mds_stores && sudo killall cloudd
(or just lookup in activity monitor),
or to logout/login to apple id,
or erase all content and settings (something might went wrong during major update)
