>>105827299>I didn't forgetThen, this means you partook in wilful malice.
You and your computer should mercilessly tortured & be shot dead by a firing squad.
bros i just spent all day yesterday getting my taskbars to work with multi monitor desktop switching on fvmw it was insane.
>shared desktop configuration available OOTB (monitors share desktop list, each monitor is on an independent desktop, if you try to pick the same one for both, they auto swap. this is like what they do on xmonad)
>make two taskbars using fvwmbutttons, add desktop switcher buttons on both
>want to have the current desktop number for each monitor to be highlighted on that monitor and update when the desktop changes
>can't just make a separate function for each button because what if i switch using keyboard, so i have to use the new_desk event to properly handle all cases of a desk changing
>new_desk event doesn't know which monitor the switch was in, only which desk you just switched to, also sometimes switching to a desk on one monitor auto swaps with the other one, so you would need to update both taskbars
>have to keep track of both monitors current desk
>no way (that i could find) to query and figure out which desk each monitor is currently showing from fvwm.
after trying for hours this is how i was able to get it to work. there's no flicker/lag/jankyness at all so I'm sticking with it, but it still feels retarded because of how absurd it is that i had to do all this. maybe i am retarded and i needed to rtfm better idk lol
>on startup, launch two tiny xmessage windows, move one to the corner of each monitor, make them sticky so they stay on whatever desk the montior is on, make them invisible, exclude them from all window lists in fvwm so they don't show up at all anywhere, make them unfocusable and unraisable
>use xdotool to figure out their window ids
>now i can ask fvwm which desks those windows are on, and write those numbers to a file
>i can read the file to get the previous numbers, then update with the new numbers, then compare and update the buttons for whichever monitor(s) changed.
Best way to modify the XFCE panel? The settings manager is really limited.

>>105827604I think Fvwm3 has variables that keep track of the current and previous page/desk of each monitor: https://www.fvwm.org/Man/fvwm3/#_command_expansion
You could then compare the variables in fvwm, or create a shell script that keeps track of this and runs FvwmCommand. Check out PipeRead and SetEnv if you haven't.

it's the framebuffer console, with tmux. i do have emacs too. i don't really use mpv in the framebuffer so i can't speak on that. doing stuff like watching videos and graphical applications i just startx my WM, with everything still seamless in a detatched tmux, and then if i want to bounce back out to the framebuffer just killall xinit.

>>105840325That is wild. You shared a few months ago a python script that is very different. pic related is a modified version, but perhaps you recognize the fuzzy wuzzy import. Is that a previous or later version?
I use that to open a browser tab to the current desktop thread and switch to it, but I haven't automated posting yet, nor do I think I will.
>>105840471that script is just to find the current desktop thread
>>105840306On the contrary, the butthurt is actually a poorly made neural network chat bot. Many such cases, and they are actually fighting each other in this thread.

>>105842486every mac screenshot I see has their windows just floating non-maximized somewhere on the screen. Do mac users really use their computer like that? Theres no point in not maximizing any program you arent actively using, you're just wasting space otherwise.

Ha. These are all awesome. When I was a teenager I loved the idea of widgets and extensions showing CPU and RAM percents and the like, temp and network information, all just scrolling on my desktop like I was the engineer on the enterprise. God that stuff was so cool.
I couldn't keep those things installed. I got so fucking stressed thinking about the CPU having to use resources to report on itself, plus the RAM, plus everything else having to waste time and power for my useless knowledge. All I was doing was downloading poorly shopped Gillian Anderson pics off usenet. I don't need all those parts saying, "Yes Sir! Here's is my status right now! and Now! and Now!"
Whooo, no. You all have fun though.

mac typical usage pattern is multiple maximized windows in different workspaces switched by gestures
>>105843969yeah i do that but the two programs that were open were both being used at the same time

>>105842539Do you stack every piece of paper on top of each other perfectly when working at your desk to maximize the desk space?
>>105835494>>105836417>>105836482I can actually explain the watching movies in the frame buffer. I tried to see how far I could go without X once and the answer is you can do most things without it using tmux. Just no multi monitor. I used VLC at the time and you can use it with the frame buffer you just either need to run it as root or put yourself in fb group. The issue bing VLC didn't respect the tmux window and just showed up as a square in the middle of the screen. It did play though, which as neat.
>>105844566Okay well this conversation made me curious so I was looking back into the fb device stuff. I checked my /dev/ and noticed I no longer have an fb device (fedora 42). Checked into that and apparently that driver has been removed since f36. They use the DRM subsystem now. I found a device at /dev/dri/card1. The mpv program has the switch "--drm-device=" which I used to point to the device in dev. It worked really well actually. I have a laptop open connected to a monitor. Running mpv with "mpv whatever.webm --drm-device=/dev/dri/card1" full screened the video on my laptop display but left open my TTY on my monitor. The command line was arrested by the running command but I got around that with "mpv whatever.mpv --drm-device=/dev/dri/card1 > /dev/null &". I then had a video running on my laptop monitor with sound and could continue using my TTY command line. The only issue is that I don't have control over the video volume outside of the fact my audio is being controlled by a volume knob some speakers. I don't know how to control the volume for now.
>>105835457>FYI, in MUllvad settings you can set the tray icon to monochromedidn't have a problem with it being colored, but it's good to know
>Any tips on which WM to use with XFCE? XFWM seems decent enough.as someone who likes to get desktops deployed fast, xfwm works fine when you modify shortcuts to your taste.
for tiling, i3 was fine too and it was easy to pair with xfce with the bunch of guides out there. you could give that a try, but it's been years since i last used both together.
>>105844776Okay so if I keep the command line arrested with the mpv command I can use the mpv hot keys to control the volume. If I open the video in a tmux window I can keep the command open there and control it. Then just switch to another tmux window and continue from there while the video plays away on the monitor. Thanks for getting me to learn something today anons!
