/fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources.

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice on bare metal and run your previous OS in a Virtual Machine.
2) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.
4) Be a retard and attempt to force single system OSs into a dual boot environment, breaking everything.

Resources: Please spend at least a minute to check a web search engine with your question.
Many free software projects have active mailing lists.

I use Arch and do almost zero maintenance. The most I've done in a year is sporadically deal with .pacnew files after running pacman -Syu. And the firmware packages thing recently. That's it, it just works.

What are my courses of action if I can't log in? It seems that I broke my desktop environment (the log in screen returned to a more primitive version), but is there some other way to try to log in?

tinkertrooning on ur pc all day instead of actually living life, getting laid, or travelling the world and seeing new things and meeting new people because it's too outside of your confortzone and anything that takes any kind of social skill triggers you so you seclude yourself to machines should be an embarassing enough realization to make you uninstall arch, Anon.

So you still get the tty login prompt?
Log in on the tty. Check the pacman log. Reinstall all the packages that got uninstalled with your last command. How do you not know how to do this if you're running Arch?

I get the default login screen of plasma, the one that looks bad. I can input the password, but pressing enter does nothing.

I'm sorry to hear that your life is so miserable anon, but I'm sure that even without Arch you can find a way to improve it!

Press ctrl+alt+F3 (also try the other F keys if F2 doesn't work). A terminal login prompt will pop up. Log in and do less /var/log/pacman.log. Look what has been removed with your last pacman command and reinstall the stuff that looks important.

I have a question that I couldn't really find an answer to by googling. What happens if I, i.e. do "apt-get install apache2" when I already have the apache2 plugin? Would it reinstall/reset it? Would it do nothing?

i love reading man pages where the author clearly hates the end user or just doesn't give a fuck about any sort of professionalism.

I really like the smooth hardware support and long battery life of running a Macbook Pro, but the experience of actually using the OS sucks donkey dick compared to GNU/Linux. What's the closest I can get to the "it just werkz without kicking the fans on or overheating and lasts all day on a charge" experience for Linux hardware? I'm fine with either x86 or ARM since I don't need gaming.
