I prefer it over flatpak or snap. I can just download an appimage and use it. I don't need garbage installed in order to do it.

Cringe
I can't tell how many times I've downloaded an AppImage on linux and it required some gay library, which I didn't have or was unable to find in debian's stable repo or whatever
Furthermore I can't tell the difference between AppImage and a regular binary

Bros, OP here. Okay so appimage didnt work because the only applications i can use to run the file is disk mounter and writer. Fucking weird.

Okay so I went and downloaded lutris via the deb file and it downloaded qsynth? I was like wtf delete that shit and i actually deleted lutris entirely then redownloaded, then no qsynth... wtf is that qsynth thing

anyways, is deb files good? can they update themselves

My best guess is that you're talking about file association in a DE (which DE?) but AppImages are executables, you are supposed to run them like `./file.AppImage`, or mark it as executable first (chmod +x file.AppImage) or do so in the file properties in your file browser
>Okay so I went and downloaded lutris via the deb file and it downloaded qsynth? I was like wtf delete that shit and i actually deleted lutris entirely then redownloaded, then no qsynth... wtf is that qsynth thing
It probably is a dependency
>anyways, is deb files good? can they update themselves
No, installing a .deb file directly will pull the latest dependencies, but the package itself will not self-update because you downloaded the package directly rather than pulling it from a repository
If you want my advice (uniquely tailored to you) uninstall linux and install windows

Open your file manager to the location you have the appimage.
right click an empty part of the file listing pane, and select open terminal here (or something similar)
in the terminal type
sudo chmod +x NAME_OF_APPIMAGE_FILE
NAME OF APPIMAGE FILE is whatever it is called in the folder.
again in the terminal, type
./NAME_OF_APPIMAGE_FILE
You shouldn't have to do more than that.

in the terminal again
chmod 4755 /tmp/.mount_heroicDIkTAn/chrome-sandbox
chown root:root /tmp/.mount_heroicDIkTAn/chrome-sandbox
then check it to make sure

It's the closest we have to Windows' standalone executables, but the devs need to figure out how to deal with its 2 main issues: its dependency on FUSE and the lack of tooling to make properly standalone AppImages.

Linux has standalone executables too, they're called ELF binaries, you don't need a gay format like AppImage, Windows didn't invent executable files
Are you just trolling or what? I feel like this entire thread is ragebait and I've just become bad at identifying it.

Btw windows didn't invent statically linking either. You can make a statically linked binary on Linux and it will work, believe it or not.

I meant executable installers. As in, you download a single exe, it puts all your binaries, dynamic libraries and resource files inside a directory and you don't have to worry about dependency hell.

AppImages fucking suck to maintain. I had a script that would automatically build one for my software, but it kept breaking in bizzare ways. The final straw was when libthai.so.0 not found got thrown in my ENGLISH application.
I moved over to Flatpak and I never have to deal with breakages like this ever.

out of all the cross platform solutions I've had the most issues with it. could be because developers don't know what the fuck they're doing but I almost always have to edit the .desktop file to make it work as intended

Useless for small fast programs (because fuse), good for medium and large programs. The only serious flaw is integration with system, i think it should have install and uninstall feature when you execute it.
