I'm pretty sure your VRAM tip only works on AMD motherboards because their iGPUs are also mobile GPUs and therefore set up for dGPU passthrough but on Intel you'll just get shit performance on everything and only be able to use the dGPU for compute.

it's a shame regular chiplet zen 3 cpus don't have an igpu
the 5700g is sadly ewaste tier and an absolute waste of money when you have a dGPU (could have gotten a 5700x3d for the same price or a 5700x for almost half the money, both significantly faster)

except the 5700x was quite literally the same price as the 5700g the day i bought it while the 5700x3d was considerably higher and the only meaningful difference only comes with the x3d cpu. 5700x and 5700g are almost the same 99% of the time

thank god i never took 4chinga stupid recommendations because i've had gpus fail on me multiple times before and i NEVER ended with a unusable pc without video output because i always bought cpus with igpus

You should get yourself a Matrix screensaver instead. Then you could use a cat picture as a wallpaper and still sleep soundly.
Xscreensaver -> GLMatrix on GNU+Linux
custom color, edit the following lines in glmatrix.c thusly, then compile
line 769 g = 0xFF, r = 0xFF, b = 0xFF; /* hexadecimal colors, this is white for example; ezpz */

or for Windows:
Matrix ScreenSaver 3.0
Freeware written by J Brown 2003

no they are not? in gpu-bound scenarios maybe...
>the 5700x was quite literally the same price as the 5700g
congrats you spent the same amount of money for like half the performance, real smart.
>thank god i never took 4chinga stupid recommendations because i've had gpus fail on me multiple times before and i NEVER ended with a unusable pc without video output
a gt 710 on ebay can be had for like 20$, sure it's convenient to have an igpu and i wish my 5700x had a basic one, but getting a significantly weaker cpu with half the l3 cache for it is fucking stupid

The benchmark you posted doesn't even show the CPU you mentioned. Only the 5600x, which is another cpu without an igpu, barely less expensive and gets trounced in any workload that actually uses multicore and barely even beats the 5700g.
The remaining cpus in that list that beat the 5700g by a meaningful margin are all considerably more expensive.
>half the l3 cache
IPC >>>>> cache
There's plenty of CPUs with lower cache but higher IPC that beat older CPUs with more cache.
>significantly weaker CPU
Every time that is brought up, it's a cpu-bound game that hits over 120 or 240 fps on both cpus with any decent dGPU. Why the fuck should I care when the games that peg gpus at 80+% usage all perform within margin of error on both cpus?
Hell, most of the games that don't even reach usage that high perform similarly.

also,
>buying a LITERAL e-waste dgpu just to have video output through the mb
again, this is why i never listen to /g/
"b-but it is le cheap" I don't give a fuck.
>inb4 just buy one beforehand
No you idiot, even fucking older gen G-series ryzen apus are better than that pos nvidia card and the other crappy 30 series cards that came after it.
>>105844790
Your own video proves the point I made above. But it's actually worse than I thought because it's incredibly misleading.
https://youtu.be/N8arD3Z5yRs?si=p1Wu8Fpz36hLKN9d

@ 13:40, the game's running on 720p, everything set to low, on a card that obviously can handle way more than that

what happens when settings are actually turned up instead? the difference becomes way lower and it turns into a gpu bottleneck

All of this is meaningless anyways because my pc is a mini itx 4L build. I can't push the clocks too high, so the X series cpus are a waste. I also didn't have a dGPU for months. I paid a total of ~650 USD for this build (used 12GB 3060).
The pc fits in a drawstring backpack. The motherboard has 4 sata slots and one nvme.

For me its been great. Not a pain in the ass at all. From what I've seen, the one technical problem people seem to encounter a lot is getting pipewire working on a fresh install. For whatever reason people seem to trip over that step a lot, but theres a guide in the manual on how to set it up, its pretty straightforward. Beyond that, I've personally never had an update cause problems, repos are well stocked, its been rock solid.

>The benchmark you posted doesn't even show the CPU you mentioned. Only the 5600x
5800x is pretty much the same as a 5700x you dumb fuck
>IPC >>>>> cache
the 5700x has definitely the same or higher ipc as the 5700g, this is completely irrelevant to this discussion
> Why the fuck should I care when the games that peg gpus at 80+% usage all perform within margin of error on both cpus?
because such games exist? and i'm pretty sure that tomb rider isn't even supposed to be one of them
>even fucking older gen G-series ryzen apus are better than that pos nvidia card
well if you truly care about being able to play games at 5 fps while your dgpu is broken, get a gt 1030 then? it'll mog your vega 3 or 7 or whatever it is
>@ 13:40, the game's running on 720p, everything set to low, on a card that obviously can handle way more than that
yeah that's how you show differences in cpu performance... by making the cpu the bottleneck
your argument is basically "yeah they perform the exact same as long as i'm not cpu bound", by that logic you could've gotten a 3400g or worse cpu
>All of this is meaningless anyways because my pc is a mini itx 4L build. I can't push the clocks too high, so the X series cpus are a waste
the clocks and tdp are literally the same, plus you could power limit the 5700x to 45w or something like that and it would beat the 5700g while drawing less power because again, double the l3 cache
>I also didn't have a dGPU for months
we've already discussed this.

Not in my country.
>well if you truly care about being able to play games at 5 fps while your dgpu is broken, get a gt 1030 then? it'll mog your vega 3 or 7 or whatever it is
my igpu literally performs better than any of the cheapo 30 series gpus you fucking retard
https://youtu.be/LnHg3kPRerA
>the clocks and tdp are literally the same, plus you could power limit the 5700x to 45w or something like that and it would beat the 5700g while drawing less power because again, double the l3 cache
yes you dimwit, the clocks are the same BUT the higher the clocks (while the cpu is in high load), the higher the temps.
I limit this cpu to 3.8~4GHz to avoid high temps and I did try it out without limits and the performance difference from 4GHz to ~4.6 is simply not worth it. It was about a ~3-4 FPS diff in cyberpunk and TLoU.

Also, no you dumbfuck, more cache isn't necessarily going to make your cpu perform better in games. I have literally dozens of examples where this isn't the case. IPC is way more relevant. A 35MB cache xeon 2690v4 gets mogged by a 16MB 5700x in any cpu-bound game. Just go look these up on counter strike.
>yeah that's how you show differences in cpu performance... by making the cpu the bottleneck

Aspie, tell me: who the fuck is buying a 1080 to run games in 720p? go ahead. "B-but muh theoreticals". REAL world scenario dumbass, both cpus get tied in most games and the games where this doesn't happen already run at over 120/240 FPS because they're either old, cpu-bound, competitive titles or a combination of all 3.

windows transparency, windows animations, etc... all of that uses vram. when you're watching something on youtube or mpv, that also uses vram from your main GPU (the one the video out is hooked up to)

it doesn't matter what OS you're using. it's just that windows and macOS usually use more than say, linux and *bsd.

...how the fuck does that matter?
all i'm saying is you have to pretend that in that graph the 5800x is actually labelled as "5700x", how hard is that to comprehend
>both don't have an igpu
my argument is literally that you don't need one and it doesn't make sense to trade off 50% of performance for an igpu
>inb4 it's only barely more expensive than the 5700x, not in my country
are you still talking about the 5800x? jesus christ you are retarded
>my igpu literally performs better than any of the cheapo 30 series gpus you fucking retard
why does that matter when the use case is "a gpu to use as video out while i rma my broken dgpu"? woah, that week that you don't have your dGPU you have 5% less performance, sure it makes sense to trade off 50% performance all the time for that.
>yes you dimwit, the clocks are the same BUT the higher the clocks (while the cpu is in high load), the higher the temps.
...what does this even mean? the clocks are the same... bu they are not? seriously what the fuck are you saying
>I limit this cpu to 3.8~4GHz to avoid high temps and I did try it out without limits and the performance difference from 4GHz to ~4.6 is simply not worth it.
and the 5700x would be even less affected by running at a lower clock speed thanks to the bigger cache, it would still be faster while power limited way lower than the 5700g
i'm basically repeating myself here because you don't understand a single word of what i'm saying
>Also, no you dumbfuck, more cache isn't necessarily going to make your cpu perform better in games. I have literally dozens of examples where this isn't the case. IPC is way more relevant.
this shit again? JESUS FUCKING CHRIST WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME EXACT ARCHITECTURE HERE, CACHE IS THE ONLY THING THAT CHANGES
>who the fuck is buying a 1080 to run games in 720p?

it matters because the pricing difference here is not negligible
>my argument is literally that you don't need one and it doesn't make sense to trade off 50% of performance for an igpu
except it's NOT a 50% performance difference you idiot. The highest difference, CS2 is what? a ~27% difference. My monitor is 144hz, I literally wouldn't even see a difference between 450 FPS and 596. The VAST majority of monitors today don't even go past 240Hz.

I literally posted a video where multiple games weren't hitting nowhere near 60+ cpu usage and over 70-75% gpu usage and BOTH cpus were within a 10-15% difference. So like I said, for me? negligible.
>are you still talking about the 5800x? jesus christ you are retarded
Oh, so you're illiterate, I get it. I was talking about the pricing difference here between the 5700x and 5800x.
>why does that matter when the use case is "a gpu to use as video out while i rma my broken dgpu"? woah, that week that you don't have your dGPU you have 5% less performance, sure it makes sense to trade off 50% performance
I already told you the time I bought the 5700g, it was priced pretty much the same as the 5700x. You're saying I should've wasted MORE on a cpu without a iGPU + one crappy disposable dGPU because of a 10-15% performance uplift in most cases? with like a sub 30% difference in worst case scenarios. Yet you're claiming it's 50% without any actual data to back it up.
>...what does this even mean? the clocks are the same...
My point was that it doesn't matter if the clocks are the same because I'm limiting the cpu to 4GHz.
>and the 5700x would be even less affected by running at a lower clock speed thanks to the bigger cache
I already said that at the same clock speeds, both perform IN THE VAST MAJORITY of games within a 10~15% diff
I KNOW that cache is important, otherwise the 5500x3d wouldn't perform like a 5700x despite having less cores and a lower clock but way more cache

God, you really can't read.

Also, the xeon vs ryzen example I gave in >>105850491 was a comparison where I showed that even when a CPU has way more cores, more cache and a decent enough clock speed, it gets obliterated by the higher IPC cpu.
I wasn't comparing architectures, but IPC noticeably improves between newer ones.

I'm not denying however, the relevance of L3 cache. I'm just saying IPC is more important.

If you meant: "significantly faster in half the games on that list", guess what?
YOU'RE STILL WRONG, DUMBASS

There's 16 games in that list, out of which only THREE get anywhere near not, 50, not 30, but TWENTY FIVE percent less performance. Which is the WORST case scenario, like I said, 99% of the time it's more like 8~15%. Which is COMPLETELY FINE by me.

tbdesu i used it throughout college but once i got a job i didn't feel like going through the hassle of setting up scripts for everything that patches didn't cover, and was tired of setting up xorg configs that would sometimes break in new and unique ways. have been using KDE + wayland since then for everything. my thinkpad running obsd is still using dwm still but if wayland ever gets traction there i'd probably end up using sway or something.

Update on this: using the integrated Intel 530 GPU for display, my Timespy score dropped from 3290 to 3287 - within margin of error. With Black Mesa at highest settings, FPS uncapped, the iGPU appears to be saving a whopping 81 MB of VRAM, ~129 MB when alt-tabbed.

All things considered, this seems like a waste of time.

and to be honest, it's only relevant if you have multiple programs that use vram running in the background while you game and/or the game in question is a ram hog like cyberpunk for instance

say, watching a podcast on youtube or music, whatever + discord with a stream open while you're playing a game can easily use like ~1GB+ of VRAM of your dGPU

It's a fresh install of Windows 10 IoT, so the background shit was absolutely minimal when I was benchmarking.

I may try it on my main PC since that seems to always be using a couple GB of VRAM at any given moment, if I can figure out how to make it work in linux.

You're going to change it in a few days because you're going to get tired of seeing it!
I don't like to spoon-feed other people because I want other people to do research by themselves!

are you fucking retarded holy shit jesus fucking christ

hooking your HDMI to the iGPU to "save VRAM" is literally only important if youre trying to maximize the size of a model for your waifu chatbot
sending the dGPU's frames twice through PCIe so that it can come back out the iGPU to hit your monitor is just like.. a secret trick to increase lag, and if you havent been able to tell that by know it might actually be over for you
good job sacrificing bandwidth, latency, and performance just to "free up 300MB"

also, fucking 16gb ram with a 5700G and RTX 3060? your iGPU is using the same pool of ram as the rest of your system. actual retardation. only a jeet falls this hard for the unused ram meme. i cant imagine how much youre hitting the swap other than like... 100% of the time the moment you load up any game?? kys

let the dGPU do the displaying, always. or kys please, but dont keep spreading this utter nonsense

I'm not OP but you've touched on something I've wondered about. How bad is it to use say a second GPU to hook up a monitor? Like I have an ancient 30" IPS monitor that uses dual link DVI, but new GPUs don't have dual link DVI outs, and adapters are expensive for some reason. How much would I be sacrificing if I kept around a 750TI or 1650 Super or something for the DVI port, but also had a more powerful modern card?

I don't really play games anyway, just fuck around with 3D and programming stuff.

I've been wondering about stuff like this for a while. Any of that bullshit actually work, or make a meaningful difference? Mind you that I have a 7950X(3D)+4090, so it's not like I need it, but the idea behind this is super neat and interesting on a technical level. I was always surprised to see that both my screens just worked like normal, as if connected to the dGPU, even though the second one is connected to the mainboard. Figured I'm just wasting additional electricity by using the iGPU on top of the dGPU, not to mention create extra heat so I removed it out of the picture.

I'm not liking WindowMaker at all, but it's so lightweight. I might move to Tint + OpenBox though.

I gotta say, the difference between systemd and SysV is really noticeable. This ancient PC boots much faster with Devuan than it ever did on Deian.

well, kind of grim how that thing would be fully capable to flawlessly run XP with good looks, but in 2010+15 it is only good for running some obscure bare-minimum UI that looks like my school computers from 20+ years ago (and still does so with more resources).

XP? This thing shipped with Windows 7 and it was perfectly capable of running Windows 7 with full Aero transparencies, the Opera Internet Suite (which was a web browser, email client, download manager and had many, many more features), MSN and Portal all at the same time with minimal slowdowns.

Today it can't even run YouTube without freezing.

I was tempted to install Windows XP on it and use it solely to rip old CDs, play really old eroges and write fanfics, but I can't find the XP drivers anymore. The fact that there's no good web browsers for XP, Vista or 7 is an issue too.

You mean vaporwaVe. It was indeed a nice aesthetic, even if it became overdone and a bit too busy/"ironic" by the turn of the decade. I'd love to see it come back in a more restrained form reminiscent of its earlier days.
