i worked for a small tech business as (essentially, a) CEO's assistant. i was the webmaster, technical writer, marketer, etc. etc. among other things.
the company is sunsetting and i was laid off because she just uses AI now.
i did this... i coasted... for nearly 10 years, and as a result i have no real specialization.

i am sort of fucked, or would be, but i do have a good reference and i can tailor my resume in any direction.

just wanted to share, but i'd also like to hear any ideas or advice.

Pay ceiling is higher in IT. You would either be really specialized as a mechanic working on boats 6 months out of the year, working on aircraft 6x12's, or some other odd balls shit like trains to even make close to 100k as a mechanic. Whereas as an IT tech you can start making 60-80k and the sky is the limits on it. Even more so if you can program and get into tech. The work experience in IT carries you farther for pay increases.

For context AWS is the only big tech company physically near me (actually it's within walking distance) with more than a single-digit number of openings. I've been applying to them for two years, got interviewed for three positions, did not get any of them. This is my job, all my co-workers are indians. I'm the only white guy. The difference is I don't even bother going to the office, I just sit at home all day. If anyone has a problem via email or Teams I provide the minimum level of badminton necessary to get the jeets on my team doing it. Not that we could do anything anyway, since getting access to anything would require four months of meetings with glaring boomers where I "justify cost" for why I need to access the Properties window on some shit software. The end result is about eight totally useless people with no access to anything sending emails and looking busy until somebody (sometimes me) asks an actual person on the IT team to go look at the problem. I would feel bad but this is one of the companies that shit out a Covid vaccine. I've been wondering when they'll fire me for years now.

I've tested the waters a bit with a masters degree and 4yoe in the Netherlands (as native). It seems the companies that are most interested in me are shitty consultancies that expect you to drive to clients (non working hours) 2-3 times a week wherever they may be in the country. Another week

Another day of hopeless applications. I'm starting to think I'm on some kind of hiring blacklist at this point due to how fast I'm getting rejected from entry level stuff without them even reaching out to me to at least talk about it at first. I also have some experience, education, and certs on my resume but apparently that's not helping. What am I even supposed to do at this point? I'm considering just bullshitting to fill in the gap and saying that I'm currently working at this family startup.

I do a lot of slightly admin (configuration of network rules and stuff and also Google admin) plus help desk. Like I can deploy network equipment with vlans and all that(doing that right now at a new site).
I'm getting fucked pay wise being 1099 at 62k which obviously gets fucked on by taxes at a huge rate. (It's the equivalent of like 50k w2)

Should I take a w2 job that pays 70k with 3 days remote but is "support specialist 1"? They have great benefits as opposed to my zero benefits now. Career wise it's a downgrade but I'm getting no money here and there is ZERO upward mobility. Literally just the it director and me here

Yeah I mean to be honest if people can swallow the subject matter its interesting. I have wrote plenty of stuff like that myself but am too pussy to put it on my CV but I'm employed so I don't need to but my company puts tech guys on the interview panels I could volunteer for it but I detest that shit but I'd find it cool.

To be honest if you can have a genuine good conversation with an interviewer where you connect on something I think that's a good sigh.
