I grew up in the times before WWW was even a thing. And for the longest of times, it was a rare privilege, and the nerds' wild west playing ground.

Contrary to what the iPhone era zoombies and Gen-A toddlers claim, it was all around better. No social media, no normalfags going ape shit about calling someone a "nigger". Entertainment was free and made out of passion, "memes" weren't even called that and did not involve wojaks.

The decline started the moment mobile-fags arrived, normalfags poured into the webs through Facebook and shit, and when Adobe killed FLASH.

It was much wilder and less safer, but because people were usually just sitting on forums/chats/blogs/etc. dedicated to their particular niche interests, you rarely had various groups bashing with each other over bullshit.
Nowadays, everyone is using the same handful of social media with very poor separation between various groups, so it's easy for your messages to be found by people with zero understanding of your position and all the damn entitlement to tell you why you're shit.
