Start with Mint, expect an infuriating experience when people tell you you don’t need the command line, you try and use the gui, it doesn’t work, then when you ask for help people say “You should just be using the command line”

You will spend days tinkertrooning around just to, at best, get equivalent functionality for an overall worse user experience.

Just download IoT LTSC and run a debloat script like Titus Util

Use Windows 10 ltsc if it's supported on your hardware. It's solid and just works.
As for Windows 11, ltsc is the only way but windows 11 is absolute garbage. You are already very much used to jank so just keep your current mindset and you'll be able to survive.

I really wonder why everyone suggests mint. Mint is not easier or harder than the other distros in class, it's just the DE people like because muh taskbar and start menu, missing all the flexibility and improvement that makes the switch worthwhile.

Ubuntu used to be the default suggestion, then it migrated to Mint, which is based on Ubuntu. I've never tried Mint but I will gladly accept anything other than Ubuntu as the default beginner suggestion.

It's the echo chamber suggestion. Mint recommendations are how you know someone parrots everything they read on reddit.

>I think it's time to make the switch.

May I ask why? I'm not judging, just curious. I have switched between Windows and Linux quite a lot of times. I've been daily driving Fedora for the last 6 months, but every once in a while I feel the urge to use an OS that's actually compatible with most software. Unfortunately, I've gotten way too used to the linux workflow

>Any tips on switching to Windows as a Linux user?

If you have gotten used to downloading stuff through the terminal, you should get a windows package manager. Winget is included by default on Windows 11 (not on LTSC tho, and that's like the only edition of Windows 11 that's kinda worth it) but I personally prefer Scoop.

What's wrong with Windows 11 (ltsc) compared to Windows 10? The only issue I had with it back when I was using it was the ugly taskbar, but you can get the Windows 10 taskbar back in less than 10 minutes using something like explorerpatcher.

>What should I expect?

Well, let me tell you:
>MICROSOFT ACCOUNT!
>MICROSOFT ACCOUNT!
>MICROSOFT ACCOUNT!

You'll be hassled about during setup, and even if you don't put it in then Edge, OneDrive, the store, Teams, Copilot, and everything else will hassle you for it every time you look at them. It's yet another example of how Microsoft takes all the wrong lessons from Apple's playbook. If you're switching from Linux, you're probably not retarded, so you might try Windows 8.1 and workarounds/not being a retard with security for the last good Windows experience. Personally I didn't like it as much as 7, and 8.1 does have some Microsoft account integration, but 8.1 had official support for three extra years so you're more likely to find 3rd party support.

Google how to avoid the forced online account creation during installation. Afterwards download OOSU10 first and foremost and disable all the spyware crap.
If that is done, it's smooth sailing. The OS keeps out of your way and shit just works out of the box.

>Any tips on switching to Windows as a Linux user?
Install cygwin after windows is installed.
Buy ssd or nvme if you had hdd, windows will be too slow with it. Double your ram.
During install make your rootfs 512gb-1tb size. The chances you won't be able to "extend" it later are huge, unlike linux. Also use a huge hard drive just in case, I would recommend 4tb. Moving rootfs to other drive is complicated on windows, if possible at all.
Install it on machine you plan to use, forget about ejecting hard drive and inserting it in other machine. Once you install, hard drive is "glued" to motherboard. I tried it and it didn't let me login because of some TPM shit.
When you create user you have to actually register microsoft email in the internet. Don't create burner account like user test1234, password 1234test. Windows will randomly require you to enter code they sent to email. I did it, forgot the password and had to reinstall.
If you play vr games, keep you Linux as backup, on win11 steamvr didn't work for me.

I did it after 5 years, it literally just works.
Use WSL for dev, it can even do GUIs.
For the rest I found the Microsoft store pretty good actually, equivalent of discover/gnome software, I think that apps installed this way also sync with windows so they auto reinstall on new ones.

Powershell is fucking disgusting though, I don't know if I'll ever get used to it, who though objects were a good idea in a shell?

Anonymous No.105868005 [Report]
>>105867994
Yeah sorry for the caustic reply, that triggered me after literally 2 years of tinker trooning VR, which was just plug & play on Windows.
Alyx works flawlessly with my Q3 and Quest Link, 100+Mbps bitrate, 120Hz (or 90 idk), 0 flicker, 0 dark screen, fast loading times (all that wirelessly on a 160Mhz WiFi 6 band)
The only issue I had is that sometimes out of sleep Air Link doesn't detect my PC, which is solved the classic Windows way, a reboot. Probably I could just restart the service or whatever, I didn't bother tinker trooning.

Powershell is fucking based. The syntax maybe is quite weird at first but having all variables strongly typed and actually descriptive commands instead of everything being a string and commands looking like "drhvp" in bash is a godsend if you write scripts longer than 10 lines that you are going to maintain.
Anonymous No.105868011 [Report]

Nigger I use both Linux and windows for my jobs for many years and I actually tried win11. Would you be so kind to explain what exactly is wrong? Well the ram part probably, I need 64gb for what I do on Linux and windows doesn't require 128gb, works fine with 64 too. I wrote it just in case.

>make a usb installation stick with rufus to disable online account, bitlocker and tpm requirement (if needed)
>gpe.msc -> disable automatic updates to avoid getting shat on your configuration at random
>fuck around more on gpe and regedit to disable telemetry, ai and ads shit
>install open-shell because the default start menu (and explorer conf) is awfully shit and bogs the cpu launching recall EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU OPEN IT
>configure powershell because even windows now needs a fucking cli to do useful shit done like installing system updates in a per case way, installing useful software to keep centralized updates without the spyware-store, etc...
