I've used text-davinci a long before c.ai and I've used the original davinci (GPT-3) around summer 2020, not even the AI dungeon version, but the original one. GPT-2 was a thing in 2019. The LLM craze itself was started after people saw the magic of GPT-3, but it got more intense after ChatGPT much later (a year after). The main starting point was OAI scamming money out of MS and pretraining GPT-3 (a 175B, trained on 300B tokens, not much by today's standards). If they didn't do this, it could have taken many years, nobody was willing to burn millions and GPT-2 wasn't that impressive (maybe to a few people). and stuff before it was really much worse. Essentially OAI was the first with the balls to burn money on large-scale pretraining. If not for this the current craze wouldn't have happened. At the same time, they are responsible for autoregressive training as inGPT-2, without which we'd mostly see things like translation models rather than completion ones.

I will give you a timeline to make this clearer:

2015 - Musk gets Altman to start OAI, the researchers were honest, but Musk's hidden motivations was mostly doomerism.
At the time OAI was a honest non-profit and it did various machine learning research, some interesting, some serious, some flashy to demonstrate Musk's points (like some game playing bots, was it DOTA?)

2017 - Google did their Transformer paper. Although Dot Product Attention existed in some form before it, it wasn't put in as stable or popular form as it was in this paper. In this form the Transformer was an Encoder-Decoder architecture, mostly suitable for things like translation from one language to another.

2018 - OpenAI's Ilya Sutskerev just cuts the encoder out and make a decoder-only architecture (GPT, now known as GPT-1), instead of needing pairs to train, you just make the input the text and the output the text shifted by one token to the right, basically making it predict the next token. (A0 to An predicts A_(n+1))

2019 - They scale GPT-1 to GPT-2, a 1B, still relatively small by today's standards and very undertrained. Results were okay.
Lots of people made various AI dungeon style things then, but they were kinda poor, they could run on your local GPU if you wanted.


2019->2020 - Until then, OAI was a honest non-profit research group, they used to write a lot of papers, they were not the commercial outfit you know today, they would publish a lot and release weights and everything.
The desire to scale GPT-2 by Ilya was there, he believed in it, so Altman had to secure the funding for GPT-3, MS got roped into it, this mostly lead to the ClosedAI transformation of today. Summer 2020, GPT-3 was out. GPT-3 was absolutely fucking magical when it came out, it could do a lot that we take for granted today, but the jump between barely coherent GPT-2 and GPT-3 was immense.

It could be used for chat if you wanted, but was quite slopped. Even davinci could be used for chat, but had repetition problems.

C.ai launched and it got very popular, but not THAT popular.
OAI decides they want to take text-davinci-002 (refreshing it slightly to -003) and try for a mobile app style thing. OAI wasn't expecting much profit.

AI dungeon was just a completion model finetune (of GPT-3). OAI cut them off at the first sign of PR trouble (people using it to write lolisho), they never had the weights, they were just a frontend.
