There are many factors to explain this including the fact that Indonesia has much more human and natural resources(oil, gas, coal and minerals), proximity to some of the worlds most important shipping lanes(Strait of Malacca which handles 25% of the global maritime trade), larger landmasses that support major cities, industrial complexes, etc(Philippines 7640 islands are generally smaller and more dispersed increasing transportation costs and making it harder to achieve economies of scale), proximity to other major markets(Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand), and with a much more homogeneous population(important factor to make sure the group is united towards a single goal instead of trying to destroy itself from the inside) all they needed is to do is to not be too dumb to effectively use their advantage.
Your point cannot invalidate that guys argument because there are too many factors influencing the disparities between Indonesia and Philippines.
