If you have a PC already, get an Air.

If you want to video edit, do audio stuff and make this your daily driver get a pro.

My laptop from 11 years ago had 24GB RAM. Apple fags are truly living in the "future"...

Whether you should buy a Pro or Air purely depends on your use case. Need a bit more performance? Go with the Pro. Need more portability? Air.

Youโ€™re getting an Air for lighter workloads that you want done quickly. You have PC for everything else. With that in mind you can base model and live within Base for Air. If you need your hentai collection you can plugin a SSD or access it directly off your PC via Remote Desktop.

Youโ€™re getting an Air because you have shit to do, donโ€™t want to spend a lot of time on it and want an excellent all-around experience while you do it. You are not getting an Air for spec contests, Gamers Nexus bar graphs and never ending distro discussions with /g/.

Good performance, lightweight, good price - pick two.
But honestly, if you need the performance: the M4 Pro is portable enough. The Air is something for people who carry their notebook EVERYWHERE and for some reason don't want to use their phone for writing a few mails.

The MacBook 16 MiniLED display is excellent. It's very bright. The ghosting crap isn't any better with any other miniLED display (they all suck). The MacBook 16 has a lot of LEDs which makes it ghost less, but, again, all miniLED ghosting sucks. No exceptions.
It's basically the best laptop display until microLEDs are a thing

I had the M2 Air but sold to a friend a few months ago...
All the new M4 models come with at least 16GB right?
Would you get the M3 Air with 24GB or the base M4 with 16GB? (considering they cost basically the same here).
I mean, my M2 used to struggle with lots of containers at work. They allow me to use my pc at home rn but I just love MacOS...
Is more RAM always best? The M4 chip doesnt seem much more powerful than the M3.

Depends on what you want to do with it. heavy tasks? Pro. Small tasks and already have a desktop? Air.

I had a Linux desktop and just use an Air for when I need a laptop on the go. 16gb is also good enough for an Air too, if I wanted more RAM then I'd go with a Pro since it sounds like you want more out of the whole machine anyway.

24GB is pretty weird even for now, I'm still seeing laptops in stores that offer 8GB or 16GB as the standard. I was stunned when I saw Chromebooks only have 4GB since you can get a Windows laptop with 8GB for the same price and just dump Linux on it (Chromebooks also having soldered RAM and that dogshit eMMC with 64GB space, so you can't even upgrade them).

He's also pretty retarded since a lot of modern laptops use that same soldered crap or are built far worse. The worst laptop on the market current is easily the Chromebook, they only come with 4GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB eMMc (not SSD, still fucking eMMc in 2025).
Also the screens on Macs are some of the best on the entire market, something they're infamous for. I won't defend for shit being soldered and non-upgrade-able since I hate that but it's not Mac exclusive at all.

It's not Apple exclusive, but it was more or less Apple's fault for normalizing it, something that they are uniquely positioned to do.
I ended up ordering an MBA today because the alternatives have the downsides of Apple slop without the benefits. It may very well be the only time in my life I have felt mildly ashamed of spending money on something that isn't junk food or degenerate sex stuff. I literally just could not find a laptop that isn't either disposable e-waste or ludicrously overpriced. Even workstation laptops are fucked, they've become almost as bad as consoomer models.

Eh yes and no. Things like Chromebooks and Netbooks were doing this shit long before Apple started doing the soldering stuff and it is beyond ridiculous that to this day, Google is offering Chromebooks with only 64gb of memory. A regular Windows laptop with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD costs the same price and can be upgraded in most cases.
I think Apple were one of the last to start going soldered since those Chromebooks and Netbooks were at it for a long time and I recall even some Windows laptops started doing it too.

Chromebooks and bottom-tier Windows laptops were soldered garbage because they were priced as soldered garbage. You got what you expected, possibly even more since poorfag laptops were HORRIFICALLY bad around the time Chromebooks launched, and even worse before that. It's the only segment of the market that has improved. The MBA was also soldered but it was basically a joke product line for teenage girls before the ARM era.
Selling something like a $6000 work laptop that cannot be easily repaired or upgraded is something else entirely. It's the kind of bullshit only Apple could get away with because they're Apple, they could put their logo on a turd in a box and it would set sales records, and once something becomes "okay" for them to do, the rest of the industry follows suit.

That hasn't been the case for a while now but it definently was at the beginning. I was surprised Chromebooks manage to continue with such garbage specs and such bad pricing. These days, Chromebooks cost about the same as an easily upgradeable Windows laptop that already has far better specs.

I'm somewhat amazed Chromebooks are still being sold considering the dogshit pricing and specs you get.

I know they have impressive processing power for how low power they are, but when I have Kobold or Stable Diffusion up and running, I'm very grateful that I have a 64GB of RAM and 16GB of VRAM. MacOS itself makes really good use of its RAM compared to Windows, so that's something to keep in mind. Essentially whatever Windows used, cut that in half on a Mac.

yeah. Macs are like the best devices for local AI. a 32gb mac can do some decent stuff with small local models. The new strix halo stuff from AMD is cool too, but you are spending pretty much the same money, and the ram is still soldered.

So if you need the extra power of the Pro, know you'll have to deal with a worse device overall just because of the fans.

That's a bit misleading. Worse overall? No. Higher maintenance? Sure. It's a markedly more powerful machine in almost every metric, it's just that you'll have to clean its internals after a few years, which is fine.

I got the m4 air when it was on sale , but it gets hot during gaming and throttles since there are no fans. It still runs games pretty decently though. I own a m2 pro mini as well, it still runs slightly better than the m4 air doing the same things. You could either get an m2 pro used/refurbished at the same price or just go with the m4 pro since it has fans and you'll get the best performance. There's also a heatsink mod for the air to keep it from throttling. I've noticed significant framerate increase when I use it right next to my air conditioner lmao.

Single core M4 takes the M1 Max to the woodshed. More than 50% faster in synthetics.
Multicore is closer but still about 5-10% faster for the M4.
M1 Max is at least still potent given its age and has the ability to run linux natively if you care.

I figured it would run about the same as a m4 mini, and needed the portability as well. It was also cheaper or at the same price as most other non gaming laptops. It does run games just as well as the m4 before it throttles, definitely a step up from a laptop with intel integrated graphics. it barely gets hot unless you start to run really high end games.

Meanwhile Mac charges retards literally thousands for minor upgrades to storage that cost tens of dollars for the company.

The productivity meme is a lie, you can just install programs on a separate WORK BASED windows machine (to avoid linux arguments) and use that when you want things done for half of the cost of the scambook.

literally doesn't matter. Your not going to notice a difference on tasks that only require single core. what matters is a m1 max having way higher GPU performance and dual encoders. The memory bandwidth is also way fucking faster.

anything meaningful is significantly better on a m1 max. gaming, video editing, local AI.

the battery life of a m4 is a bigger downside.

Apple developers moved to 64-bit ages ago. A 32-bit Intel game will eventually be left behind.

I'm seething at all the bad info in this fucking thread. Yes, if you goal is to PRIMARILY game, maybe a mac is not the device for you. But there are huge changes right now, and Apple devices are fine if you want to play games.

1. ARM is ascending. switch 2 is ARM and native apple silicone games are going to keep being released
2. Apple silicon is really fucking powerful. A high end mac will demolish the most high end nvidia laptop
3. crossover and various compatibility softwares work really fucking well.
4. steam is about to release a native apple silicone app
5. Apple Silicone can emulate 360, ps2, gamecube, switch, REALLY WELL

There's an argument a nice Apple tier laptop is probably a better gaming device than a steam deck. apple already has more native games. mac has way more power.

those laptops are always bulky and end up costing more though. On the apple silicon laptops you get that edge that runs games somewhat decently while still being extremely portable. It's really nice if you are a digital nomad and have to move around a lot and can't be lugging a gaming pc around. ot every game is guaranteed to work though so you have to check if it will really work, but sometimes you can just try it out and be surprised that it runs surprisingly well.

Yes, but it's probably better to get an AMD AI max 64gb since it's about the same price ($2000-3000)
But it would run at around 4tk/s running a 48gb model (it's actually a bit less than that, the AMD AI max is more like 32gb because it runs out of memory prematurely), and it would run around the same speed as a M4 pro (note the base macbook pro does not have a m4 pro chip, it's the same chip as the macbook air, and the default m4 chip is not better at AI than the Intel / Amd equivalents since they have the same bandwidth).
If you got the m4 max, it would actually be double the speed of the m4 pro (48gb model running at 8tk/s), but at that price 5090's make a lot more sense because 2x 5090 could run a 48gb model at like 20tk/s (one 5090 can run a 24gb model at like 40tk/s), plus that's only for LLM's, Nvidia does a lot better for image generation.
But openrouter makes using LLM's really cheap (1 million input/output tokens for a dollar for a model that probably uses 80gb of vram) and some models are free (free models have a 100 prompt daily limit).

NTA but in my country, they cost about $500 or more depending on specs ($500 being that 4GB base model type) and a base model Windows laptop with 8GB RAM and a 256 SSD is the same price. I'd understand Chromebooks if they were about half that price but $500 here is bullshit, you can just get a Samsung tablet or an iPad for that same price and they would be a lot more useful.

I don't fucking care how it benchmarks, soldered parts are still gay and lame. Memory is debatable because of performance, but there is absolutely no benefit to soldering in the SSD except for making the laptop thinner, and if you genuinely care about this, you should not legally be allowed to express opinions on computers.

The speed and power usage difference is microscopic. If anything it makes potential problems worse. SSDs wear out and have inherent security issues compared to spinning rust, they are a perfect example of the kind of component that you want to be able to easily swap out.

2013 macbook air and 2012 mac mini owner here. I've pretty much neglected my macs since I went the iPad Pro route in 2018. After owning my first 11" Pro for 7 years, I recently upgraded to a M2 12.9" with MKB. I've been wondering whether I should go with a used M2 Air or M4 Mini instead. I honestly don't see myself using the Air much even if I do upgrade, because my first instinct will always be to reach for the iPad. However with the Mini I will at least be able to replace the old 2013 which I use everyday to run my security monitors + remote desktop to my PLEX/file server + router & network management tools etc but I'll also be able to use it for things like backing up my phone and ipad etc. Would getting a base 16gb M4 mini be the right play here? considering the last mini update was the M2 it's probably not likely we'll see a M5 mini right?

If you can stand using a dual core CPU in 2025 at all. More power to you regardless of what laptop you use.

Iโ€™m pretty sure if you go the mini route you can use the iPad as a screen too. Minis are the best machine you can get at the price point. The transition from Intel to Silicon isnโ€™t to the extent of HDD to SSD speed wise but itโ€™s noticeable.

Yeah, I just bought a m1 max 16''. It's pretty awesome. gaming has been better than I expected on it. I needed a laptop to do everything. I'm about to get my sorry ass to south America.

My daily device is a 2020 27' imac. I LOVE THIS MACHINE. even an old intel mac is still kickass. it's great.

I have a 2015 MBP right now and am looking to go to M4 Pro myself. When I tried the 16in against the 14in at the Apple Store (running Final Cut) I was really impressed by the performance. I figured the 16 would run better since it is bigger but the 14 was right there with it. Iโ€™ll probably get the 14in M4 Pro soon for the lighter weight and increased portability.
