The problem isn't so much the X server code, but the client code. For example all X clients assume 8 bits per pixel. If they add support for HDR10 it will break everything.
Same is true for Wayland, but that code is a little more fresh in the mind and so perhaps 3rd parties are more willing to fix it. GUI on UNIX has been shit since inception and will never get better. Flashier perhaps, but not better.

I use Window Maker primary and as far as I know its X only. You can also give CDE a try. I don't know about linux but its part of pkgsrc that comes with NetBSD and open solaris. a quick pkgin and few updated config files and you too can rock a workstation like its the 90's

It's nice to not have to care about Windows and Linux drama anymore thanks to the binary emulators and wine. I can even play modern vidya if I want. Although most of the stuff I play is 15+ years old by this point and I don't see that changing any time soon. All my shitware for "real work" keeps just werking and my LAN is safe thanks to pf. I even have all my GNU shit working and isolated from the rest of my system.

We should all thank these faggots. They finally made it so unbearable that people started working on BSD again.
