Yes we need regulations that will empower corporations and remove the ability for individuals to use new technology without permission from the government.
We need regulations to be complex so that nobody can be truly certain they are in compliance, allowing the government to selectively prosecute the people and organisations they dislike.
We need regulations to carry strong punishments so that only the largest corporations will be able to afford infractions. Combined with the complexity this will secure an oligopoly for the large corporations.
We need regulations that pay lip service to protecting the vulnerable. Politicians, corporations, and media must be able to claim that the regulations will protect women and children. Whether they actually protect anyone is irrelevant.
We need regulations and we need them now!
