It was a change in the demographics of two groups: the people working at the company and the people viewing the videos. The change in one caused the other to change, the diarrhea produced by one fed the other like a circular human centipede.

Back in the day, it was just us, a bunch of creative, white autistic teens in our own little circle jerk of madness.

I still remember how, at some point, we managed to make the "Re: DragonForce" video one of the most replied-to threads on all of YouTube.

Our parents and normalfags (who are now smartphone zombies, the same ones who used to tell us "don’t spend so much time on screens"), they weren’t part of it.

Enshittification happened once they got smartphones.

People don't remember this, but there was genuinely a big backlash when YouTube first started testing out running ads before videos. People were genuinely afraid of the profit incentive turning it into cable TV... and they were right.

I've been working as a video editor for the last decade -- the decline of YouTube is to be blamed on monetization and the serialization of content.
If your goal is to become a full-time YouTuber your only option is creating easily watchable and serialized content.
Anything with creativity takes too long to produce in a time frame proportional to the earnings.
And of course, because YouTube wants to make money they promote serialized content that consistently brings in views.
The worst decision YouTube has made as of late was promoting the home page above subscriptions, but that was necessary to keep viewers on the site longer.

This, particularly shit like
>Algorithm rewarding open mouthed soifacing thumbnails
>Algorithm rewarding everything being over 10 to 30 minutes, so something that could be summed up in 3 minutes gets redundantly run into the ground for 30
and on and on. Things have gotten even worse beyond just YouTube too, notably Tiktok is the biggest issue - there is a hypothesis that that latest garbage Pixar film is shot with everything in the exact center of screen (forgetting the rule of 3rds and other simple filmmaking concepts going back a century) specifically to cater to things being clipped for Tiktok. Hell, the massive ADHD-ifying of everything being cut into tiny videos and how Youtube and others do Shorts and Reels and all the other garbage was one of the first casualties of Tiktok's success There's also stuff like things being designed to be
>Second screen content
where on YT or even Netflix or whatever every character does an exposition dump and tells instead of shows because the presumption is the viewer has it on in the background while doomscrolling their phone or fucking around online, so they're not really paying attention to the movie, show, or other content on YouTube.

None of this was some natural progression of content, it was specifically encouraged by the way social media companies, advertising, data mining etc...behind the media hosting fronts decided to provided financial and viewership incentives.

For the first couple of years, there was a 10 minute limit to video uploads. (Apparently introduced in 2006 to curb unauthorized uploads of TV shows, but a long enough for SNL sketches.) Most of your 2009 column are converted flash animations, gifs, and viral web videos. The last one which generally had to be short since they were being served directly from web pages.

In 2010 the length cap was raised to 15 minutes. Longer for some users as the era of the "Youtuber" emerged. The tools and workflow got increasingly accessible to produce pretty-damn-good if not "professional" videos, and release it to the world. The traditional entertainment networks were no longer gatekeepers. And viewers got to decide who to make famous, no matter how unphotogenic or cringe.

monetization killed creativity. people rely on youtube for their livelihood so it encourages quantity over quality, and when people get lazy it gets even worse. most people are cattle who will watch their daily e celeb video to waste 10 minutes, or the painfully empty "documentary". the youtube algorithm also favors this garbage because they make more money off it. The "creators" are add friendly and upload regularly.
