I just built a PC, went for 16 GB RAM. To me that's a good amount. Prior to this I used 8 for the longest time. And I'm a Unity programmer and gamer.

However, about 50% of /g/ posters seem to say this same thing:
>d00d RAM is dirt cheap these days why wouldn't you get at least 64GB dude it's just so cheap I mean it's laughably cheap---
>here, check this link, you can get more RAM for only $149

What you guys don't get is that 150 bucks for fucking memory isn't "nothing" to me. Fuck, most of my computers have cost that much.
You guys are 20-year-olds, right? You're still high on your first job and don't seem to understand that life is not a competition in who gets sucked in by capitalism the most. Your RAM isn't your penis size, anon. What you don't understand is that if you keep spouting that "just buy more, memory is dirt cheap, bro" bullshit, your Firefox tabs will consume 1 GB per tab before you know it.
Have you ever stopped to think about the absurdity of our situation? We've been here on 4chan, this same website, since 2008 posting text and heavily compressed jpg images. This same action used to require under 2 GB of RAM. Now Mozilla and other corporations are telling you that posting text on a php image board from 2008 requires your goy ass to get new parts every year. The experience never improves, only your pc does.

What's more, Instagram photos are like 50kb in size, and Tiktok videos are low resolution 3mb videos.
We get NASA tier hardware for that

You can max out your ram when ram gets cheaper on your obsolescent platform like it did for DDR3, nobody needs more than 16GB right now, even 4GB is plenty if you don't play vidya.
Putting your swap space on your SSD eliminates any chugging you'd feel from low ram.

You can do what you want, but I would waste that money on a GPU with more VRAM to keep it able to play 1080p games for longer.

Your parts were designed to last for a few years before needing to be replaced
Not because they are broken, but because their Skinner Box 3000 now requires a newer part

my computer from 2010 doesn't feel slow at all, 14 years of improvements to CPUs only recently doubled the single core instructions per clock as opposed to every 18 months like it used to.

In 2009 I was running an 800Mhz Athlon with 320mb of ram (mismatched dimms). The web was more responsive with that setup than it is now with a high end modern computer. I was able to open a hundred tabs with Opera and it only took around 1GB of commit, and even with only 320MB of actual ram the machine managed to stay responsive using spinning rust for swap space.

AI was a mistake, I'm not an AI cuck and will never use it once in my life.
Studies are already showing that anti-AI users have better brain activity than those who outsource their tasks to a machine.
You're making your own brain obsolete.

I'm 35, unemployed, and I think that way. I literally cant get a job and I'm tired of pretending. The competition is just too tough. There are 200+ applicants for any IT job.
I have 2 STEM degrees, too, so naturally I'm now bitter and anti-capitalist as fuck. Capitalism is fine as long as you're on the receiving end.

hardware advances and software development degrades. nobody is optimizing anything anymore, so those 16 gigs are now a bare-minimum for browsing and shitposting. and it will only get worse and very quickly, so you might want to reconsider your hardware choices.

I think 4 GB is the point where you start to notice some slowdown, although it's pretty minor if you're not gaming. Most of these RAM lovers have no experience with low RAM systems and don't realize that their kernel uses RAM differently when it's starting to fill up because they've never gotten to that point. PC fanatics have always fallen for "bigger number" marketing, like sure it is a bigger number, but you had enough already and you just didn't appreciate it. It's tiring to listen to. 8 GB or 16 GB is fine for most computationally intensive tasks and is the upper limit of reasonableness for most users. If you're scared of being obsolete, then buy your RAM in a configuration that allows for spare slots and then upgrade if and only if you actually need more. And if you really want to feel like you're a smart consoomer, buy faster RAM instead of more capacity. And if you just want to feel special, install a capacity that's not 2^n. It's a conversation starter.

Let's apply moore's law to your own pic. To make it easier, we will assume that RAM sizes double with double the transistor count and then half that amount because we are graceful. Let's calculate:
>2011: 8GB
>2013: 16GB
>2015: 32GB
>2017: 64GB
>2019: 128GB
>2021: 256GB
>2023: 512GB
>2025: 1024GB
Alright, moores law isn't perfect, let's make it 512GB for 2025. The amount of RAM to live like a Homer Simpson king in 2025 is 512GB.
Let's check what the normalfag computer makers at Apple offer:
>Mac Studio: 512GB RAM
>Mac Pro from 5 years ago: 1.5TB RAM
Checks out! Moore's law works.

The rest is open for the reader to think about themselves.

People "buy" phones every year because of promos. Verizon is offering me a S25 if I trade in my S23. If you don't change services, why pay the same amount for inferior tech?

With computers its the same thing slightly. I can buy ram now that can be used in another build later. You don't need to buy every part after the intial purchase.

>Atx still a standard
>power supply
>ddr5 will be around for years
>ssd and nvme

not only is 4chan older, i've been here longer than that
you can still post here with half a gig of ram if you know what you're doing, even less if you really push it. now back when i first started using 4chan, i could post even on my old (even at the time) 1994 thinkpad with 24M of ram. of course, this was back when 4chan didn't just look like an old website, it technically was one. no javascript, no encryption, no captcha. you didn't need a new browser to post

One condition can be cured. The other cannot, it's in their genetics and part of their parasitic racial survival strategy.

Well if you're severely cost-constrained then sure. Do what you have to do, buy the bare minimum spec you can get away with.
But when you're in a first world country, you earn more than minimum wage, and you use computers a lot then things are different. Your budget for a new rig is going to be at least $1000. An extra +$150 for more RAM is an easy decision.

>What you guys don't get is that 150 bucks for fucking memory isn't "nothing" to me. Fuck, most of my computers have cost that much.

Trivial price for a tool no "programmer" should notice given their waterfall of tech money. I'm dirt poor by US standards, making a bit under 70K/year net, but for as much as I use my machines I don't need to skimp.

I happen to like virtual machines, RAM and storage is cheap so I've zero reason to care about a few hundred bucks. I spend selectively so about a third of my income is discretionary and I'm debt free so buying tools which serve my use case is painless.

I still use my old machines too as shop boxes for reading tech info and ordering parts, but have zero reason to seek minimalism so I don't.
