Why would I use optical media when I can download the optical media to my hard disk and then never have to deal with optical media?

Too slow and cumbersome. Use USB sticks instead.

Blu rays don't rot. How the hell did you manager to shatter an optical disk? And just don't get them dirty in the first place.

not only do I still have Blu-Rays, DVDs, and CDs, I even still have a few Laserdiscs

REMINDER
If you have an optical media collection NOW is the time to start digitizing it.
DVDs manufactured by Warner Bros around 2007 are already succumbing to disc rot. Unliked scratches and buffs, rot cannot be fixed.
Make a digital copy of your collection now, and copy that shit to multiple hard disks, cloud storage, etc

Look up MakeMKV and Handbrake to get started today

Backups are good to have, but unless the discs were faulty they're not going to rot if stored properly. I have plenty of 20 year old and older DVDs that play just fine, I even have a few DVD-R that old that still work..

I want more mini discs. Put them back into production. I also use some flash media.
Anonymous No.105894421 [Report]
>>105892108
Why do I need to own it when I can just download it illegally for free though? It makes no sense to pay for media ever.

THIS. The brutal truth is you only use optical media for storage if you're POOR. Everyone else can just keep their flash drives/SD cards stored in their refrigerator in a ziplok bag/vacuum sealed.

For whatever reason the relationship between SSD data retention and storage temperature while said SSD is powered off seems to be some kind of esoteric knowledge when it's really simple: every 5C cooler your SSD is store at you double the data retention. So you roughly get:

4 years at 20C
8 years at 15C
16 years at 10C
32 years at 5C

Fridges SHOULD maintain temps below 5C. You're welcome anons.

>you only use optical media for storage if you're POOR
or if we started collecting it way before flash drives/SD cards were available, and we've just continued on because we like it

ORRRRRR if you're not as autistic, just boot up your flash drive/SD once a year and let it idle for a few hours (or while you sleep) hooked up to your computer's USB port. This auto-refreshes the cells and you get another 4 years of data retention from that point on in your drawer.

if something is bitrotted, i can just download it from the 'net, can't i?
besides, i did digitize most of it. those torrents come from somewhere, you know

For long term storage you should use tapes anyway.
Anonymous No.105897707 [Report]
>>105897481
Refrigerated SSDs can exceed the lifespan of tape drives and that's assuming that you NEVER access them after they've been put in refrigeration. Sure tape drives are cheaper per GB but jesus christ what a nightmare to access them...

Is this a storage thread?

What do you guys do with shit like family photos/videos? I've got a shitton of stuff from y a7IV. Photos are big enough, but also tons of 4k stuff.

Tape drives work in theory, but are expensive as fuck to get into and nobody but me will know what the fuck to do with them. For now, I just have everything on a NAS, backed up to another NAS and the most important stuff backed up to external HDDs.

Maybe M-disk blurays for the bare minimum shit.
Anonymous No.105898819 [Report]
Yes, buy the bluray goy, otherwise you're a goy

my CDs I burned 25 years ago are starting to corrupt and skip. I'm not falling for this shit again.

If it's for family, print the good pictures from a printshop. You'll die and your backups will get trashed, but kids/relatives will keep a trunk full of photos forever unless they truly just don't care (50/50).

>unless the discs were faulty
that is exactly the case. there was a DVD production factory in that era that pumped out absolute shit quality discs which Warner Bros used for a ton of releases.

why should I go out of my way to inconvenience myself and add extra steps to doing the same things? what? I'm gonna buy a game on Steam, burn it onto a disc, and plop that disc in whenever I want to play said game? do the same (except the buying part) with movies and music? now I do have a disc reader in my rig, but not everyone does (I think this is retarded and I hate that modern PC cases rarely have space for them), and the use case is digitizing FROM discs
