Bottom and left are both acceptable. Because that way it won't interfere with flicking the mouse to use the scrollbar or the window control buttons.
I prefer bottom. Make it as small as possible to maximize space, make the window name visible by the icon, and do not stack windows under the same icon.

You use top AND bottom.
Top is a thin-as-possible always visible taskbar with the start menu on the left and all status indicators/systray stuff plus clock on the right.
Bottom is a large auto hiding taskbar with all the actual task management tools (quick launchers, non-grouped multi-row full-name task buttons, virtual desktop switcher).
Fuck icon-only grouped tasks, searching through them is too slow.

There is no debate because the answer is simple.
To the bottom
See picrel?
That's a desktop on a traditional desk.
Where do you draw stuff from? The side? the top?
No, from the bottom aka front.

>but muh screen space muh wasted pixels
Look at a book. A book is usually something like 16:9 too. Where do you find eg annotations? Or page numbers? on the side of each page? No - on the bottom. It's a convention we've had for thousands of years, people got used to it. End of discussion
