people either love or hate computers there's very little in between, using a terminal scares them.
Even people that use it for work, they might be prolific with some softwares but most of them outside of their bubble are lost

Normal people can't install an OS on their own
Most people who can don't care to try it
Those who do give it a chance go back to windows because Linux is not convenient

Because nearly all industry standard software has no Linux version. There's also the fact that, at some point, you'll have to use the command line with Linux.

Literally this. If the OS "just works" and is capable of opening up a web browser that can use Youtube and Facebook, it's good enough for 99% of normies. Plus a lot of distros these days are perfectly capable without ever even needing to open a terminal.
I mean shit, you have a whole generation of kids right now growing up using ChromeOS, and that's built off ubuntu iirc.

Ubuntu needs to take the mantle as flagship and market/promote itself more as a real competitor to Windows/MacOS. Seems like they sort of have lately. If they can get more general product support for Linux they will see more people switching over.

Someone maybe valve needs to encourage creator tools to be ported to linux. Once youtubers all use it they will advertise linux for free. People still need photoshop (i know there’s photopea) and adobe creative programs like substance painter / designer. A lot of people don’t care about free/freedoms they just want what is supported and works. And those people really don’t want to have to install another operating system.

Plus there's the whole Steam Decks using Linux introducing more people to Linux than ever right now and converting them over.
So basically what >>105903259 said. If computers had Linux preinstalled instead of Windows, they'd just be using Linux. But every PC and Laptop people buy has Windows already installed so that's all they know.

If everyone in the world switched to Linux then Microsoft as bad of a cancer company they are, would have to fire tens of thousands of people.

perhaps even reaching 100K people, because of all the support in different countries,

so... no... Keep it at 10% at most, it's where the silver lining is

They are but still not quite like a corporation. Maybe that's a good thing, who knows. It simply takes a lot of aggressive promotion to become a top dog, like Windows forcing itself onto every PC in the 90's and 2000's guaranteeing a lifetime of consumer lock and developer support.

fair i suppose, but i feel like there's only so much Canonical can do to not draw ire from within the overarching Linux community. i remember there was a time when Ubuntu was available as a free preinstallation option with hardware purchases. stuff like that seems like an especially good exposure path. making deals with companies to use Ubuntu might also be ok but Microsoft would totally compete them out unless the company is deliberately avoiding Windows. that seems to be a growing case for governments but idk about elsewhere.

I've been saying, the rapid growth of cloud computing in tech has been a very good thing for the Linux world. Linux servers are always cheaper and higher performance than Windows so most companies opt to go with cloud hosted Linux machines and that means their devs have to do Linux maintenance work. I think the natural segue will be companies starting to shift over to Linux as their OS of choice for work computers as well to gain parity. This means more development and support over time and perhaps finally breaking the wall and creating a true big 3.

oh yeah, that's true of course. i was thinking less about servers and more about work computers. but you're right, everyone swapping to Linux for the cloud definitely seeds some knowledge and experience that makes transitioning to it as a main OS so much easier for workers. like i said before, Microsoft tries to make deals with companies to use Azure etc. but their influence is waning. i think WSL was their big attempt to establish a foothold, and i'm sure that's worked well, but i don't know how long it'll last.

Linux is a shit tier personal computer os. I don't wanna fucking deal with component x upgrading breaking component y that is required by component x, w, v, and u. Oh, but the new Verizon of x requires a, b, c. Sorry, but c is no longer being maintained, you need to install community c. Linux is GOAT for development but I will never use it for my personal computer.

Over 60 % of the world uses Linux to run everything ever from earth to space. Many countries have over 20% desktop/laptop Linux usage and on the server side it is over 90% and the rest of the devices from cameras to network hardware and between, it is basically 100%.

>in the case of home PC users
Alot of software companies dont have a Linux client/version for specfic software and most PC users are doing other things besides simply browsing the internet through a web browser, which in most cases is PC gaming to justify the higher spec hardware but windows have better driver support for most users(See AMD vs Nvidia driver support). Much like how windows took hold of the PC world through highly desired exclusive programs(ex:DOOM from DOS),Linux as an OS wont find high adpotion unless it has something that Windows doesnt have and lot of people want or don't have it that cant be found anywhere else.

For the most part people derive their behavior from other people, and due to exposure that means that most people derive their behavior from TV and advertisement.
There simply wasn't anyone pushing to advertise Linux or portray its use on TV as anything other than nerd shit.

Nothing is stopping anyone from installing Ubuntu but it's just not good enough. No competition would exist if Ubuntu was that good. The package manager in particular is a giant dog shit and yes it's borrowed from Debian and by extension it's also a giant dog shit. Portage, pacman and nix do a much better job.

Mostly just that the learning curve is fairly steep if you're trying to set up your own desktop. Windows and Mac has simply had a lot of time to simplify the install procress due to already having had decades and decades user feedback by literally billions of users of varying skill levels with all manner of hardware and software running on the OS'. Thankfully Linux is at least not stagnat in either the kernel or distros and the differences between the user experience in 2000, 2010 and 2020 shows clear improvements. By 2030 I expect it to be even better, primarily thanks to the increased install base of various government organizations which will simply force distros and the kernel team to fix the recurring problems that go beyond the common issues that everyone might had but which crop up when you do a 10x increase install base.
