I do but I only buy drives with type C these days.
Micro B 3.0 was a dogshit stopgap connector that was only used because it was the only option for its size, type C is objectively better once it came around

It’s very real, it just never saw much use.
Lots of weird usb formats like that out there. There’s also universal type A which is a legit standard but nobody uses it because it’s more expensive

Most of the external caddies I see anymore use USB-B and an external power supply. I've only seen this connector on a seagate that draws power from the same USB cable, and another seagate that failed.

I actually liked it because you could easily see which orientation to insert it in.
Type C is even better of course but it was alright

It's also backwards compatible with Micro B 2.0 cables, which were very common at the time.
You'd only get 2.0 speeds of course but for charging it was great to have that option.

There are 6 years between the spread of USB3 on consumer PCs (2011) and the advent of USB-C (2017).
All external 2.5" drives during that time used that micro usb 3.0.
I have one of those as a backup drive.

This at least had a purpose. It carried monitor power and USB, allowing for a single cable from the monitor. No separate power supply needed.

You misunderstand me.

The connector in >>105906956 is not DVI, it's ADC: Apple Display Connector.
It had additional pins, allowing it to carry monitor power and USB. Monitors with ADC didn't have a power connector on them. They received all their power via the ADC cable. DVI alone does not support this, only ADC could do this. If you wanted to connect an ADC monitor to a computer that only had DVI, you needed a separate power-injector box.

Anyone remember MHL? A bunch of phones supported it. Absolutely fucking cursed standard.
USB Micro-B on one side, HDMI on the other. But Micro-B doesn't have enough pins to transmit a HDMI signal, so despite having a HDMI connector on the other end, it didn't actually transfer compliant HDMI. You needed a TV with MHL support, or a converter dongle, to get a proper HDMI signal from it.

wich had more pins like the current usb-a 3.0 connector.

Man, I hate these little shits like you wouldn't believe. They're so damn tiny they're almost impossible to manipulate precisely enough to get 'em seated on the connector. I guess if you have some good tweezers or something they might not be such a pain, but I don't have any handy really. If I never have to mess with one again it'll still be too soon.
