Were any of you in the first few waves of college campuses that were given beta access into old facebook? Somehow my dinky uni was.

Say what you want about how the company turned out, but it was nice to have orderly user pages compared to the shitshow that was myspace. Livejournal was already on its way out.

back then you genuinely made more money using your knowledge of systems for good instead of hacking/bad.
so there were very few bad actors on the internet who were willing to take out something so large for basically no legitimate reason and massive negatives. like it didnt matter how insecure shit was back then because there were so few internet users and finding them was trivial, no one fucked with big fishs.

The concept of having a large server intended for handling a large number of queries, and suddenly going so viral that you immediately outgrow that server wasn't really a thing back then
He probably could see the trajectory of the site and upgrade the hardware manually at certain increments

Hardware load balancer and bare metal. Just guessing. Works perfectly fine today too but it's not very cost effective in many scenarios

Only white people were on the Internet.

Bringing indians and such online made it very risky to have a website.

For some time, they had only very minimal security. passwords were stored in the clear.
