Disregarding the obvious nigger bait, that router is awesome. I installed OpenWrt on mine and it had around 8 MB of space free. Installed zapret and some other stuff there.

You usually don't install stuff randomly. I install stuff when I need something, for example: UPnP, DPI bypass(zapret), DoH, banIP, vnstat, WoL. It's a router so there are stuff you can and can't do with it, it's not like a desktop where you can install 300 useless programs.

https://www.dignited.com/94595/xiaomi-mi-router-4a-gigabit-edition-review/
read the openwrt page on it, not all versions are supported.

I got a xiaomi ax3000t for $25, supports 160mhz bands. it was fairly easy to flash openwrt and the u-boot bootloader, although I had to switch to a dodgy chinese fork because I was having driver issues

Just wireguard and tang on mine. Keeping openwrt packages up to date is kind of a pain in the balls, so you want to have a good reason for it to be on the router and ideally not shitware that needs to be updated every 2 weeks or it turns into a major security issue.

You can build your own with a mini pc and use your old router as a access point to use wifi, you can also isolate that network with vlans to protect your wired connection from outside forces and monitoring
