Thinking of throwing this on an old laptop. Should I be good for security if I keep it behind a firewall, install the latest Simplix, and install an actively supported browser like Supermium?

Setup a UNIX machine. Expose it to the internet directly then watch the log files. Same thing happens to Windows.

Here is the funny thing though: If you have a proper firewall between you and the internet or even just a NAT it isn't a problem. Since all this

Security is a meme if you are not retarded. Your computer is firewalled by default with your ISPs router. A random 13yo 1337 h4xx0r from the internet cannot hack you because he has no attack surface. Just go for Supermium, or r3dfox, and you will be fine. Most updooters who claim that old windows versions are "insecure" have no actual idea how computers work and want you to updoot or fall for the false opposition (linux).

All of those people who make videos like "YOOO GUYS I CONNECTED [old windows version goes here] TO THE INTERNET AND GOT HACKED INSTANTLY! DON'T DO IT" either expose it directly to the internet (which is never the case in normal circumstances) or download malware themself (which is user error and would most likely compromise you on modern OS as well).

Many exploit kits scan the Windows 7 CVE lists to add the latest ransomware techniques. Supermium relies on all sorts of hacked apis to force it to work on Windows 7, it is a security risk in itself. Even Firefox is giving up in two months. Just go to gentoo.org already. If you can hack Windows 7 to keep it "working" you can install gentoo.

i feel like you dont understand what you are talking about, how exactly do you propose anyone can hack you magically on windows 7 but cant on w11 or fedora linux? what do you even think operating systems are? you do realize that most AVs are practically worthless, and the heuristic they use to find what a virus is is pointless if it's a day 0 attack, so you are not defended on any os if you are unlucky, the AV can only defend you from already reported finished attacks in most cases. Firewall, updated browser, content blocker extension, HTTPS everywhere, DNS provider, and not visiting shady sites and downloading shit from them is the only way you can protect yourself. And no, magically connecting an unupdated device to internet will not magically hack you out of nowhere, if that were the case every normgroid would get hacked as they all finish OOBE and then instantly go on internet without waiting for months or years of updates to go through

Doesn't happen magically, that's a targeted attack, and a normal user is never under that sort of security concern unless you are a high profile public target. If you spent any time researching cyber security, you'd see how much of a underdeveloped field it is and just how insecure ALL operating systems besides smartphone OS-es like OneUI, PixelOS, iOS are. All of linux and windows and macos has terrible Compartmentalization, Sandboxing, and ways of getting applications and other software. You'd drive yourself insane if you took security as seriously as you larp to do, you could have a bios malware from day one and never know, there are multiple reports of Steam games containing malware and you might get it and never get rid of it properly as they can persist through nuke reinstalls. Even if you do everything as clean as possible and updoot everything and enable all security options you can still be pozzed and unable to do anything about it because desktop OS is terrible for security. So in that regard, saying that W7 is objectively much worse in security is kind of a cope when main reason why linuxtards say linux is safer is through obscurity and less users.

Beginners advice:
- The firewall should be on a different device, for example a pihole.
- Check network settings, netbios, smb etc should be disabled.
- By default windows launches a lot of background services and some of them are network capable. READ what they do, disable what you don't use.
- Do some web searches, there are still old sites that cover more specific steps for your windows version

>Getting Windows 7 working with modern hardware and installing all the necessary updates, extended updates, drivers, etc. is more hassle than installing Linux
Thats why you don't buy new hardware if you have some self-respect.
>and getting modern software working is either a massive hassle or will just not work at all
Same as above. Most modern software is simply not worth your time. A few modern programs that are actually worth your time have either legacy builds or will work with vxkex. Most older productivity tools for windows 7 (or even XP really) still mogs the vast majority of latest FOSS alternatives.7-oi
>Only if you only use a handful of programs and websites which you never venture outside of.
Thats what the majority of people does with their computers nowadays.
>The minute you click off of 4chan or Youtube onto some external link, then you are at risk of getting infected
projection
>Because it just works
Even the most "just werks" linux distros are far from just working. Poor software selection, mediocre hardware compatibility, RTFM culture and community full of narcistic faggots (ebussy), literal pedophiles (devault, bicha) and very insufferable faggots in general (hector martin, asahi lina, linus torvalds etc.) are the main reasons why linux and FOSS software in general will never be nearly as great as mainstream proprietary equivalents, even older ones.

Windows 7 is one of the first versions that was actually stable and had proper 64 bit support, and at the same time, the last windows version that microjeet released before the started making it progressively worse with tablet UI, tons of unnecessary telemetry requests, artificial account and hardware requirements, AI and other faggotry. Troonix on the other hand not only has inferior software support but is also made and used by a bunch of very insufferable, power-tripping faggots.

Windows 7 still gets security fixes retards.
Activate 6-Year ESU wit h MAS, install the first 3 years normally and then download the newer Server 2008 R2 rollup updates from the update catalog and install.
Server 2008 R2 is just a different SKU much like Professional is to Ultimate, same binaries and same updates, has been this way since it released. With these installed it is the same security patch level as Windows 10/11.

And even then yuo do not get instantly owned without these updates, they are mostly local privilege escalation exploits that don't really matter for most users. If you are behind a NAT you are fine.

Irrelevant, since all the software that was released for Windows 7 back in the day was, is and will most likely be superior to whatever alternative loontroons have. Even XP era software is like that. Photoshop from 2012 still mogs gimp and krita, MS office from 2010 still mogs modern libreoffice.

Sure but you don't really need a firewall, it's a fairly modern OS, by default I don't remember it having any open ports and you can disable remote desktop if you are paranoid. Also you connect to a router which has all ports closed so a firewall won't really do much. Better to have a local firewall in case something wants to get out.

Ignore fear mongerers like >>105916009, >>105916033

Why not? they are literately the same as what you got before official EOL, all they did is take the Windows 7 consumer branding off the updates.
It's not hard to understand. Since Vista, each variant uses a common core base OS, with each SKU deciding what features are enabled and what default software comes with the install (also extra server shit or not).
They are still patching shit that is unimportant for servers, a recent one came with new 2025 dated USB microphone drivers. There are no hacks involved here, as long as you have the 6-year license (possible with MAS) the updates will cleanly install without the need for any modification. Hacks to install the updates were only needed before MAS could fake the licensing.

They are doing something similar even now, Windows 10 LTSC and consumer GAC are using the same common base. Eventually the GAC updates will stop but LTSC will keep going.

We use the same old image formats that we used to use 20 years ago. Modern VLC works just fine on Windows 7, in case you need to run a video that utilizes nucodecs (you can still re-encode those with handbrake). I don't work with faggots who use modern adobe software, so I fortunately don't have to deal with modern adobe programs. And all I do all day is; watch youtube, listen to podcasts, online shopping, play old good games(none of that mtx/gacha shit). And I process over a million dollars in payroll per month for all my businesses, from home, using my windows 7 PC. I do not give a shit. I will never switch to modern windows. I have nothing but contempt for the modern windows os, modern microsoft and the jeets that run it. Since steve ballmer left microsoft has been in the toilet. I have been a loyal windows user since 1985 when my dad let me have his old ibm pc compatible with windows 1.0 on it. But no more loyalty from me. Microsoft lost my trust a long time ago. I have switched all my businesses to word perfect. I dont care that its more expensive. I refuse to give microsoft a single fucking penny. I will use windows 7 forever. I will pay hackers and coders and whoever to keep my windows 7 system up and running as long as possible. Because it is the superior operating system. I also have a macbook but fuck macintoshes. You updooters keep telling the same thing since years and they are still being updated. When old legacy browser like mypal perishes, new one, like supermium is created.

No software other than web browser and maybe some clients for certain services/your own infra, should ever connect to the internet. Thats why we use firewalls, like simplewall.

Yeah sure. Old operating systems are vulnerable only if they're directly connected to the Internet, like literally every single port port-forwarded, no firewall, no router NAT, or in other words if you use them as public Internet servers. As long as you don't do retarded shit like that and you don't visit shady websites you should be fine even with XP.

The number was a lie. In reality, Steam didn't want to keep making updates for W7, W10, and W11 at the same time. Because of also pressure from Microsoft, they inevitably gave in and said they'll stop support of WIndows, despite W7 still being a fine os to run these days. Remember, even a lot of video games intentionally block out W7 support not because it increases dev time, but just simply out of spite.

I haven't logged into steam proper since they shut down 7 usage, meaning I haven't touched the games I have on there, just use the app to chat with.
if they could programme their own platform instead of basing it on chrome, they could have kept support in more easily - some old games don't run well on 10/11 and I doubt steam accounted for that compatibility when they decided to block 7 from the platform.
i used it in offline mode a few times with wifi off so it didn't update, but then just dropped it.

Tired old myth, crime groups definitely have enough wealth from crimes and crypto, to afford 0days.

Real estate. I also own several businesses to support my real estate investments. Such as bars, restaurants, ATMs, and other food establishments. I used to also own alot more bars, hotels and motels and nightclubs. But unfortunately the pandemic fucked me.

>retarded cattle: i shouldnt be encumbered by social contracts
>also retarded cattle: NOBLESSE OBLIGE! NOBLESSE OBLIGE!
NTA, but I've never stopped loving the hypocrisy of the hoi polloi, nor their complete inability to understand cause and effect.
The old aristocracies treated you like cattle, but at least recognised you as part of the nation, and shared your blood, your religion - but you didn't want any of that. You wanted democracy. You wanted social mobility. You wanted infinite immigration.
So now you get your new aristocracy (billionaires, politicians etc.) who treat you like cattle, but have no other ties to you, whether nationality, blood, ideology etc. - you're just a resource to be consumed.
You got what you wanted, but didn't want what you got - keeping an absolute monarchy would have protected you from everything you now bitch about.

the people on 11 or linux are going to be much less likely to get exploited because 0days get patched eventually, meanwhile people on 7 will continue to be more exploitable because they have no access to the source code to fix it themselves nor a company(s) with a financial interest in getting them patched asap
