Brehs, so "strings" as a data type aren't actually a thing? It's just an array/list of characters that higher level languages abstracted away?

Oh no, it's much worse than that anon. Don't look up the implementation of std::string in C++. That's one of the fastest strings out there too. Luckily computers are pretty quick now and the difference between using a string and a normal character array is not usually something noticeable.
