It's a flaw, that's why the 3090 Ti has a revised board design that is closer to the 4090's.
You can even install a 4090 GPU and run it in a 3090 Ti PCB after BIOS modifications.

If it was that bad of a flaw then every PCB would have gotten revised after the initial batches.
Not gonna deny its probably suboptimal but clearly it wasn't that bad of a problem for AIBs not to take very drastic action

>If it was that bad of a flaw then every PCB would have gotten revised
That would cost more money because it's as simple as just swapping the physical board.
They would've had to switch to costlier voltage controllers for all video cards that power the GA102 chip.

The 3090, 3080/Ti use two cheaper voltage controllers.
That's why the power phases a split into the NVVDD (GPU core) and MSVDD (SoC), and the VRMs for the NVVDD are the ones that usually die from enduring too many transient spikes.
The 3090 Ti is safer because it doesn't use this cost-cut design.

3090, 3080/Ti are all time-bombs, AIBs have exhausted their RMA stock of these cards.

AIBs aren't allowed to make drastic changes to the video card's power delivery design.
All they can do is add more phases (band-aid) for the NVVDD, but even overbuilt Strix, AORUS, and Suprim 3090s have been dying.

There's a reason why NVIDIA ditched that split power phase configuration for the 3090Ti.

Then what the fuck is their purpose if they can't design better PCBs?
You mean to tell me its impossible on the AIBs end to have fixed the 3090s?
Why are people patronizing these AIBs every so harder by giving them more money every gen if they are so constrained?

The 3090 chip was programmed to work with a split power delivery design, which has proven to be unreliable.
AIBs don't have the license or the resources to change that. Only NVIDIA can do this.

AIBs can only add more/better power phases to that flawed power design, use better TIMs, and/or improve the cooling & operating noise.

Is it normal that an LED on a motherboard flashes for split second when turning the PSU on, but nothing else happens? I don't have RAM and CPU yet, so I only tested by connecting the ATX power connector. Even without that I'd expect the rest of the LEDs to stay on or something. Motherboard is Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite.

Exact same thing happened to me and I had to take it to a store too. They said it was mainly due to an internal USB hub I carried over from my old system not being compatible due to wiring pinouts, but you don't have one. Did you check the case grounding? The store also said that was a common culprit.

Youtube letting poors know what they are missing out on.
Monitors more prominently market their specs so poors are reminded they cannot utilize it properly.
Wide variety of games so some indie pixelshit can run at 4k120, which is just not accessible to the poor in a AAA.

Most triple A slop games even with 5090 a 3000 dollar plus gpu won't run at anywhere near 120 with max settings and 4K DLAA. You have to use upscaling. No one is entitled the games just suck and rely on upscaling from 720p to get good fps now.

The 5050 is a $250 card. Even the 5070 is one of those few cards that like to stay at MSRP, and that is not "budget".

User error settings. AAA games today are even nice enough to not have overmuch variance between Low and High settings, despite the former allowing such cards to run them flawlessly. Then there's neural textures on the way to ALLOW poors to start playing at high settings for a modest framerate cost.

these days you'd really want a console thing that costs very little, the games get optimized for that set of hardware PLUS you can install windows on it and use it as a regular pc for 4chan and porn

it'd solve a lot of problems if you just had a lot of devs optimizing for 1 set of linux/windows pc hardware

pic rel, i realize it's an inoptimal setup due to old case. and i cannot seem to move the cables on the floor away from the bottom fan.
is there any point of having a fan pointing at the HDD's? it's not like they run hot. i was thinking about moving it to the top to output air.

With 8gb? Sounds miserable, if not impossible. Didn't LLMs actually need even more vram than SD? Unless you mean as a service and not local, making this entirely irrelevant.

Still can't recommend the 5060ti/8 at all. If you don't want to shell out for the 16gb model (it's not exactly great anyway), check your local used market.

There are no older used NVIDIA cards here with 12-16gb of RAM, that are cheaper than new 5060 Ti 16gb, unless you go necro into 3090, which would need another $100 for new PSU that I'm not buying for it.

I guess my question is 8GB of ram really limiting in 1080p 60hz gaming? It doesn't look like I have much choice if I want to upgrade soon, and keep using CUDA LLM.

single core bench tells you how fast 1 core is relative to other cpus and then it would mean 1 cpu is 10x faster than the other

1) What am I missing out on by going with a 9600x vs a higher tier CPU? Will I regret it 5+ years in?

2) Are there any small desktop or otherwise flat cases that I could potentially strap under my desk (conveniently, obviously I could strap a tower under there but it would not be convenient)?

3) BONUS QUESTION (because I just thought of it): If I care most about latency and throughput, what CPU and such do I need? Does the motherboard version make a difference? I know I'd need fast RAM and one of the top tier m2 SSDs

Once that technology spreads it will unironically be parry or die for AMD. If they do not have an answer IMMEDIATELY they will risk fading into actual irrelevancy. Even Unboxed Steve is willing to admit the 5060 has strong performance only held back by its VRAM limitations. Should that ceiling be practically removed entirely for -5 FPS (more than paid back by not being memory limited), then the 5060 ends up being able to play every single AAA going forward while you have to pay a premium for a 9060 XT 16GB to compete, AND the textures will still look Better than Native™ on the former.

When the HUB video came out all the njudea shills worked overtime to slander Steve and call him a liar. Now we have more independent testing exonerating him. The only difference in this test here is the driver version on the same patch of windows and its a 10 fps increase in Indiana Jones PT, this game and Black Myth Wukong which also sees a similar improvement are probably the two worst performing RT games for RDNA 4. This shows the full pathracing performance has not been unlocked yet and the FSR Redstone update coming in a few months will give a significant increase. The difference in non pathtraced RT between 5070 ti and the 9070 XT is already practically a tie with games such as AC Shadows where the 9070 XT wins even. It's nice to see that AMD is working effectivelyto refine RDNA 4 and narrow the gap further.

NTA but 5070 is terribly overpriced. 5060 Ti 16Gb is merely $100 cheaper than 5070. 4070 Ti is faster than 5070. And Gigabyte saturated early launch market with their cum-dripping shit so hard that cards from other manufacturers skyrocketed in price just because they don't cum all over your PC when hot.

>I don't get how people are loyalists
Me neither. I was simply buying what was cheaper and faster. I wish AMD didn't fall behind in optiscalers and frame generation. I know they're getting there as we speak, but those older released titles that I have missed playing because my PC was too shit, are never getting those technologies. So if I want to play even 2-3 years old games, I have no choice but to go with NVIDIA. I also want some light LLM capabilities. For NVIDIA it's 4 clicks away after installing CUDA drivers. I'm not sure it even works on AMD.

It's good that Intel launched their own line of GPU, but there's literally no stock even if I wanted to buy them.

The blower cards being borderline unusable probably contributes, super tiny heatsink. You can get to 1080ti (probably higher at this point) performance with the water cooled cards though if you're using linux. The red devil and I think sapphire pulse (can't remember if that's the card) are also decent.

Do people typically suggest getting 24in monitors for 1440p then? I see almost nobody suggesting 24in monitors and people getting 27 or 32 in ones or bigger, which seems nuts to me based on this. Do I just have really high pixel density standards or something?

Also how do people handle high res laptop displays without tiny as fuck menus? Window's scaling seems terrible and applies itself to things it shouldn't. Why the fuck is scaling even still necessary, has Microsoft seriously never bothered to make dedicated menu and UI graphics made for 1440p and 4k displays?

Performance-related issues are mostly down to the OS & game engine, especially for DX12 titles.
It's not a coincidence Microsoft started to accelerate Windows display-related issues since NVIDIA started to work on RTX 50 driver fixes; NVIDIA was finding issues that Microsoft needed to fix for Windows.
Even HWUB Steve admitted his little "Fine Wine" video's performance boost mostly stemmed from games + Windows updates.

It depends on how large a case you want.
Pop Air, Epoch, and Meshify 3 are a bit smaller (space for 280 or 240mm rad for the top panel).
Lancool 216's front fans run loud at stock settings, you will need to set a lower static speed, still a nice case.

207 or 4000D RS ARGB if you like light shows, they are both good cases.

Montech Air 903 is a decent budget case, but the design isn't for me.

you're planning to buy a gpu in 2+ years time? what is wrong with you? FSR4 is technically RDNA 3 exclusive because they designed a subsection of the gpu's cores to process it directly, similar to Njudeas DLSS-dedicated die-space.

Its a shame its no longer open-source and available to both Njudea, Intel-aviv, and all amd gpus, but it never gained any real market-share outside of amd gpus and the upscaling arms-race demanded a sacrifice i suppose.

Also without using upscaling tech you're compromising with god-awful scaling that isn't really supported by a lot of popular apps. Steam is a pain in the dick sometimes at 1440p with its tiny text, i'd dread to post or parse the steam discussion forums/friends groups at 4k.

how are you guys even discussing gpus? it's a solved discussion until next gen
If you want the best perf get a 5090
if the next step down is good enough for you get the 9070xt or the nvidia alternative or if you use linux only or something where amd works better on or whatever the fuck
it's not even a discussion worth having
suck whoevers dick you wanna suck the most
how is this even a real discussion

The price seems fine, but the stand sucks. I would get a VESA mount for that monitor.
It's your standard 1440p 180Hz IPS monitor.

Because it's not that hard to pick a laptop you need/want? Especially with all the dedicated laptop reviewers available.
It's more about whether the laptop spec you want is worth spending the money on.

See if the Acer XV271U M3 is available at a reasonable price.

You just have to check the spec sheets of the case and the 4090 model you want to purchase.
They give you a GPU length clearance; you should plan to have at least 20~30mm of spare clearance (with front fan or radiator attached).
Use the case's CPU height clearance information to check whether the case is wide enough to fit the card plus the 35mm recommended cable clearance before bending it..

Seasonic's 35mm bend clearance isn't a requirement; they're covering their asses with that disclosure.

I'd get a watercooler for the cpu. Its not necessary but it leads to less throttling and lower noise when the cpu ramps up.
The mobo has 1 pcie 5 m.2 slot so I'd get a 2tb samsung 9100 for it. Theres 2 other pcie 4 m.2 slots and your cheaper nvmes can go in those.

ram is prob fine but not best

I have an unopened 8700k, STRIX Z370-E, 64gb DDR4-3000 CL16 RAM, and a Deepcool Castle 240EX, (and a 1000w PSU and a case, but I'd hold onto those) I've had sitting around for 7-9 years at this point

Is it worth trying to sell all that minus the case and PSU? (could I get $200 for it?) or am I better off just building it and buying a modern GPU, and then upgrading the CPU, RAM, MOBO, and cooler later?

How much issues will I run into if any trying to use a 4080 with this? Obviously I'll be CPU limited, but in practice I'm wondering how it'd handle say Cyberpunk if I wanted to play at medium to high settings at 1440p at 60fps. Also wondering if the 4000 series GPUs have the right power connections for an older PSU without using the dodgy/flawed converters

There's no need for a general about a product that is one and done. Modding a laptop is either super restricted to whatever the manufacturer deems upgradeable (usually storage) or is the realm of enthusiasts who already know what they are doing. Just ask here. What laptop models are available to you and which are you currently looking at?

Oh yes! Even dense dust filters only filter particles down to a certain size and the very fine dust particles accumulate inside the case nevertheless. It's just a lot less material than without dust filters and doesn't choke cooling equipment nearly as quickly.
