The biggest illusion is that your enemy is software.
Every cellphone is giving away your location all the time by connecting to an antenna. The government doesn't need a GPS on the phone; they have the connection logs that are stored for up to 50 years.
They know where you have been just by looking at what tower you connected to in that time, and they can tell how long you stayed there because they also have the disconnection time.
