it's not really fragile, companies used to know how to engineer things.
Ironically, the less complicated hardware has gotten, the worse engineering has become.
you could drop any one of those and they'd be fine, but drop an iphone from more than a few feet and you'll have broken glass

Not really, they all had their own OS because no one shared with each other but when java managed to set an standard they all quickly adopted it, software's sole purpose was to sell hardware back then not the other way around like it is now when hardware is sold at a loss sometimes to lock you into their platform.

True. The ribbon on both my N80 and N95 8GB failed. Twice on the N80. In hindsight, the N82 would have been a much better purchase than the N95 8GB. There was nothing like the N80 at the time. N73 lacked WLAN and had the joystick meme, which was even more fragile than N80's ribbon.

I had a flip phone. Most of it was relatively thick plastic by volume so if you dropped it the plastic would just deform inelastically and absorb most of the energy. Modern phones are just 6 layers of tech crap with
a) practically a vacuum formed sheet "case" so that you're not just holding a pile of electronics in your hand
b) hard metal and glass that either absorbs all of the energy by exploding or transferring 100% of it to something that will.
c) fragile components like 12 layer circuit boards with tiny bga chips, screens, cameras with a zillion lenses and servos, a battery that's just a couple cells in a flimsy plastic bag etc.

Sometimes if it hit hard enough the back cover would pop off but usually even that wouldn't happen and it would just get another dent.

this is what I hated the most, we already had phones with decent microsd cards and a good music player UI yet they ruined it by not letting you use any headphone you had but the one that came with your phone if any. Phone manufacturers could have wiped mp3 players way earlier if they actually did their job properly

False and you are obviously jeet trash who wasnโ€™t there for it. The only hardware-specific thing you had to contend with were soft key codes, and it was like 12 lines of code to cover all the codes for 99% of the phones out there. Android and even iOS are far more fragmented developer experiences now.

At that time, you had an mp3 player anyway.
The storage on phones was too tiny for music and you got pic related for free gifted out on random marketing campaigns.
So you used the proprietary phone connector for charging only, and charge once a week. It was bare an issue.

They've been married 22 years now and their son is working through his last year of aircraft mechanic school. He's taken his parents up on flights a few times, which makes Joe grin at the confidence his son now has. He's come so far from the timid child who was afraid of getting kicked at soccer practice. He's his own man now.

The years have been kind to Kate with only slight wrinkles at the corners of her eyes when she smiles, as she often does. She's preparing lunch right now for Joe, who has taken a week off from work to build those planter boxes she's been asking for. A tall glass of lemonade sits in a sunbeam coming through the western window of the kitchen in their little house on the outskirts of town, droplets of condensation slowly finding their way down the glass.
