Its a female afraid of moving forward mentality. You can benefit from it if you have a varied schedule to work around, schooling and kids. Beyond that sticky notes, notepad++ and a calendar is most of what you need.

He really did not benefit from 12 hours a day of studying since he's not applying those skills to a workplace. Anyone can get by with 2-3 hours of daily studying. More than those hours is normally counter productive since your no longer focused on the material anymore.

Also you should be focusing on labs, application and larger projects to really learn the content. Studying theory only gets you halfway there.
