PC-98 Linux do be painful:

- Plamo Linux/98 is basically Slackware for Japs, so all the traits of Slackware transfer over
- Last update was v3.3 in 2004. No modern package management and other stuff to help you out
- Kernel had to be built from source to fix a bunch of issues like a broken /dev/mouse and CD-ROM mounting
- XFree86 3.3 was fucked with Matrox GFX, had to manually install XFree86 4.2
- XF86Config!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- The provided WindowMaker package didn't work with XFree86 4.2, so I upgraded to wmaker 0.80
- The NIC didn't work initially, so until then I had to transfer files over null-modem serial. Eventually I fixed it by forcing IRQ 3 on C-bus slot 1 with PCISETUP.EXE in DOS, after which ne_probe() detected it
- ALSA luckily built without a hitch, /dev/dsp works. I don't use any sound server atm tho, not sure if I should go with esound or something else

There's a provided ONScripter package on the contrib CD, so I might do something with that.

First the HDD failed and then I kept getting Bluescreens on the 870 Evo SSD I ordered as a replacement.
Now it's working again with a cheap Intenso SSD.

it's called The Great Day of His Wrath by John Martin. this is the original photo. you'll need to open it in GIMP and scale it up or down to your exact resolution, then go to Colors > Dither and set the red/green/blue to 5/6/5 and save it as a png in order to get that pixel perfect dithered wallpaper. im not uploading mine because its 1024x576 for my netbook and nobody's using that resolution in 2025 lol. for the other stuff, you need to install fvwm as your window manager. go to the website datagubbe[dot]se/fvwm and download the "4Dwm-like" at the bottom where it says Download the archive ~75k. unpack that to ~/.fvwm/ and you'll have to mess around with the files yourself to get it how you want, it's kind of a pain in the ass and i'm not uploading mine because you'll want totally different programs on the left bar and whatnot anyway so its pointless. but you'll figure it out.
